Ferry’s vision of Greek “otherness” was all but exceptional. The uprising of Greeks against the Ottoman rule in the 1820s aroused waves of sympathy throughout Romantic Europe of the time. It even gave birth to a movement known as Philhellenism, which fought for the cause of the people whose forebears “shaped the mind of Europe”2. But Philhellenism was doomed to live a rather short life, at least as a strong and influential movement3. Indeed, Greece eventually gained its independence in 1832, but the young nation proved unable to honour the expectations vested in it by the Philhellenists’ imagination: to be the equal of Plato, Aeschylus or Pericles was for sure a tough business for the 800.000-odd inhabitants of the Kingdom of Greece, painfully emerging out of a devastated post-war landscape4. Though Philhellenists were not to disappear completely from the European stage, Philhellenism soon lost much of its initial momen- tum. Vermont History Expo Photographs and News
Vermont History Expo Photograph & News Media Collection, 2000-2012 FB-79 Introduction This collection contains selected newspaper and magazine articles, professional and amateur photographs, and slides of the Vermont History Expo during the years 2000 through 2012. It is housed in two document storage boxes and three archival storage boxes (3.25 linear feet). The core of the collection was transferred to the VHS Library by Sandra Levesque, Expo Coordinator working under contract to the VHS, in 2007. The remainder of the materials have been added from VHS office files. Organizational Sketch The Vermont Historical Society began hosting the Vermont History Expo at the Tunbridge Fairgrounds in Tunbridge, Vermont, for one weekend each June beginning in 2000. The event featured displays by participating local historical societies, museums, historical organizations, period crafters, demonstrators, and re-enactors. In addition there were historic presentations and speakers, musicians, heirloom animal displays and presentations, an authors’ tent, parade, and country auction. Thousands attended the weekend-long event which was held annually until 2008; the event resumed as a biannual event in 2010. The event had its genesis in the Heritage Weekend sponsored by the Cabot Creamery and the Vermont Historical Society in 1999. This event, an open house of historical societies in Washington and Orange Counties for one weekend in June, grew into the Vermont History Expo the following year. Sandra Levesque was the coordinator hired by the VHS to run the event between 1999 and 2006. The Expo event was preceded by a series of workshops for local historical societies on how to create effective displays. -

The Transfer of the Exposition Form from Europe to Japan and China: The Case of Jury Awards Jeffer Daykin Though large-scale events bringing merchants from distant lands together in ephemeral marketplaces have existed across cultures for over a millennium, the “exposition” form that emerged from Europe’s Industrial Revolution was qualitatively different than earlier trade fairs. Beyond adding comprehensive arrays of technological innovations to the variety of exhibited products, the events themselves were held for a greater variety of purposes, some of which could be at odds with its functions as a consumer marketplace. Goals of educating the public to inspire continued technological innovation and to inculcate the value of modernizing efforts in society at large were emphasized by the originators of this new exposition form yet the notion of the free exchange of ideas stood in contradiction with the more commercial purposes of the events from their outset. Emerging from this conflict was the feature of jury awards for exhibits which came to be a near requirement for events to be deemed an exposition. By examining the context in which the jury awards element was first incorporated and tracing how it was transformed over time as the exposition form was transferred beyond the West to Japan and China, we can see how the tension between educative and commercial functions of expositions were ultimately resolved in favor of the host-locale’s primary interest. More developed nations like those in the West employed jury awards primarily to confirm the quality of exhibits for commercial purposes while late-developing nations such as Japan and China used jury awards to promote domestic innovation and technology transfer. -

Seen from a contemporary perspective, the movement’s foremost concern was cultural resilience as a notion of national identity. Metabolism responded to the human and environmental catastrophe that followed the atomic bombing of Japan and vulnerability to natural disasters such as earthquakes, with architecture envisioning the complete transformation of Japan as a system of political, social, and physical structures into resilient spatial and organizational patterns adaptable to change. Projecting a utopia of resilience, Metabolism employed biological metaphors and recalled technoscientific images which, together with the vernacular, evoked the notion of a genetic architecture able to be recreated again and again. A specific concern was to mediate between an urbanism of large, technical and institutional infrastructures and the freedom of the individual. My aim is to critically examine the notion of sustainable architecture by rereading Metabolist theories and products, such as terms, models, projects, and buildings. For a better understanding of the present discourse, this text searches for a possible history of sustainable architecture, a subject mostly presented ahistorically. -

Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States. -

The event organizers announced a requirement of thirty thousand volunteers to assist them in successfully organizing the mega event. Such events could prove to be landmarks in destination brand building and may lead to an increase in the number of tourists. The purpose of the study is to gauge the level of understanding about the event impacts within the resident population and their willingness to get involved in event organization. Priory studies of perceptions about the economic, cultural and environmental impacts of a mega-event, are well-nigh non-existent, especially for World Expositions. This study explores residents’ perception to get a fair idea of how they get involved in a mega event that will surely have profound impacts on the destination. Drawing on stakeholder theory and triple bottom line (TBL) model, the study uses primary data collected from more than two hundred fifty residents of the region, through a structured questionnaire.
