NOTES ON SENECA’S TROJAN WOMEN FOR VCE STUDENTS Betty Gabriel-Jones Seneca’s Trojan Women, is, like most of his plays, modelled on a Greek original, Eurip- ides’ Women of Troy. However, he brings a distinctly Roman attitude to his plays, an attitude no doubt at least partly formed by a life led in and around the courts of the Julio-Claudian emperors. Seneca thrived under Tiberius, fell out of favour with Caligula, returned to Rome on Caligula’s death, was exiled by Claudius, then recalled, became influential at the court of Nero (indeed was probably the second most powerful man in Rome, after the emperor) and was eventually sentenced to death by Nero. This eventful and, one assumes, stressful life surely played a part in his somewhat pessimistic view of life. It is hard to see how this could not be the case. After all, his protégé, Nero, murdered his own stepbrother, his stepsister/wife and his mother Agrippina. His second wife, whom he supposedly loved, he kicked to death in a drunken rage. Witnessing such events, even if one were not involved, would not lead one to see life as a sunny, cheerful affair. And Seneca was not uninvolved. He was no innocent, and may even have condoned the killing of Agrippina; certainly he composed a speech for Nero in which he justified his action. In addition to all this, Seneca lived in a Rome where bloody and murderous games were the staple entertainment of the masses. By philosophy, Seneca was a stoic—that is to say, he advised a life designed around ra- tional behaviour, modesty, and discipline. -

Kohut 2 The Darkness of Man: A Study of Light and Dark Imagery in Seneca’s Thyestes and Agamemnon Seneca’s Thyestes and Agamemnon are texts in which light rarely presents itself, instead it is dark that is present from start to finish. Throughout the course of these texts, I take note of the use and presence, or lack, of light. There appear to be two specific uses of light that serve specific purposes in Thyestes and Agamemnon: natural light (generally indicated with primarily die- or luc-1 based words), and artificial light (referenced by words related to/derived from flamma or ardeo2). Natural light is prominently used only when discussing its being consumed by darkness, while artificial light appears in passages saturated with destruction and chaos. -

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: • Situate Senecan tragedy in the contexts of Roman literature, history and political philosophy • Analyze the elements of Roman Stoicism present in Seneca’s Thyestes • Characterize contemporary literary approaches to the play • Evaluate the play’s literary and philosophical elements as an integral whole Writing Intensive (WI) CLAS 4000 is a writing intensive course in the Writing Across the Curriculum Program at East Carolina University. Sugrue 1 Maegan Sugrue Judgment, Authority, and the Morality of Justice in Hamlet Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a complex and moving text, asks difficult questions: Is it right to commit an evil act in order to rid the world of a worse evil? Is it damnation to allow evil to remain because one desires to abstain from committing evil? What is the cost of justice? What knowledge can be trusted when determining when to pursue justice? How does one decide when to act? How does one decide when to hold back? These questions are further complicated by the many variants of the text. Quarto 1 (Q1) from 1603 is notoriously known as the “bad quarto.” Because of the many perceived corruptions that exist in the text, it is thought that Q1 is perhaps a reconstruction of the play from memory by some of the members of Shakespeare’s company. Quarto 2 (Q2) from 1604 was likely prepared from Shakespeare’s own handwritten manuscript, but the folio version from 1623 (F) has been accepted by scholars as the control text because it is likely the most true to how the play would have been performed while Shakespeare was alive and active in the company. Although most scholars agree that both Q2 and F come from Shakespeare himself, the two texts differ in many ways confronting editors with the questions of what to keep and what to cut. Two such instances are in 4.4 and 4.7. At the heart of these scenes specifically lie the following questions: Is justice only attainable at the expense of morals and ethics? If it is only attainable at the expense of morals and ethics, is it still justice? Is it revenge instead? In exploring these questions, one must also consider what knowledge should be trusted in making such important decisions. -

The paper is concerned with the mythical theme of Oresteia as it has been reworked in Eugene O'Neill's play Mourning Becomes Electra. After juxtaposing the key elements in the story as they appear in Aeschylus and Sophocles on the one hand, and Eugene O' Neill on the other, the analysis moves on to consider the significance of the changes introduced in O'Neill's version of this ancient story. The focal point of the analysis is the brief comparison of two disparate models of reading – the Freudian and the Jungian model – and the relevance of their different implications for the patriarchal culture of reason. Key words: Oresteia, Eschylus, Eugene O'Neill, the myth of Oedipus, Fromm, Freud, Jung While dreaming, man is a great poet; when he wakes up he is a wretched man again. At least in most of the cases.1 I In his dreams man comes back to his inner self. Both dreams and myths are messages that we send to ourselves from the depths of the unconscious. They are the storehouse of our deepest insights connecting modern man with his primeval roots. In them we have the perennial experience of the human race recorded. And yet, in his waking hours, while preoccupied with the self-centered drives of the ego, modern man seems to have forgot- ten the language of his true self.2 According to Giambattista Vico, the l8th century Neapolitan philosopher, man is in- stinctively poetic in his response to the world. -

I draw on Norbert Elias, Emile Durkheim, Marcel Mauss, among other social theorists and historians, to counter dominant views of fear in the social sciences as a sole destroyer of the social fabric with evidence of how and why fear both tears and tightens the social fabric, both destroys and fosters solidarity. Yet with the exception of a few spaces of hope where families of victims of forced disappearances organized to demand justice from the state, this “tightening” of the social fabric did not transcend but rather exacerbated socio-spatial divides. -

Acknowledgement: The author acknowledges the support of a Large ARC grant A79601552 in the writing of this chapter. 2 Introduction Throughout recorded human history, treachery and betrayal have been considered amongst the very worst offences people could commit against their kith and kin. Dante, for example, relegated traitors to the lowest and coldest regions of Hell, to be forever frozen up to their necks in a lake of ice with blizzards storming all about them, as punishment for having acted so coldly toward others. Even today, the crime of treason merits the most severe penalties, including capital punishment. However, betrayals need not involve issues of national security to be regarded as serious. From sexual infidelity to disclosing a friend’s secrets, betraying another person or group of people implies unspeakable disloyalty, a breach of trust, and a violation of what is good and proper. Moreover, all of us will suffer both minor and major betrayals throughout our lives, and most of us will, if only unwittingly, betray others (Jones & Burdette, 1994). The Macquarie Dictionary (1991) lists a number of different, though closely related, meanings of the term “to betray,” including to deliver up to an enemy, to be disloyal or unfaithful, to deceive or mislead, to reveal secrets, to seduce and desert, and to disappoint the hopes or expectations of another. Implicit in a number of these definitions is the rejection or discounting of one person by another; however, the nature of the relationship between interpersonal betrayal and rejection has not been explicitly addressed in the social psychological literature.
