Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This thesis examines the development of the Mission of Siam during the period 1909-47, when it was still being administered by the French missionary order, the Missions Etrangeres de Paris (M.E.P.). Under the leadership of Vicar-Apostolic Rene Perros, the Mission of Siam expanded its missionary efforts for the first time to the north of Thailand and strengthened its reputation and networks in local society through the construction, upgrade, and maintenance of social works such as clinics, hospitals, and schools. However, problems were also encountered. The Mission was badly affected by the economic depression of the 1930s, while some of its administrative practices, in particular the ceding of jurisdiction over the northeast of Thailand to the Mission of Laos, aggravated tensions between the missionaries, the government, and elements of the local community. The thesis also examines the concurrent development and effects of Thai nationalism during the period 1909-47 on the Mission of Siam. Concepts of Thai national identity underwent major transformations during this period, and its effects on the Church were unpredictable. As the first Pibul government geared itself to seize former Siamese territories from French Indochina, anti-French rhetoric reached its height. At the same time, the move to make Buddhism a sine qua non of Thai identity was made. Together, the two factors unleashed a wave of persecution on the Thai Catholic population from 1940-45. Yet, the inconsistencies of the persecution suggest that there was more at stake than just nationalist pride; ulterior local political and economic motives, along with pre-existing tensions between the Catholic and non-Catholic communities also played a part in prolonging the persecutions. For the Church, the persecution of the 1940s gave it eight martyrs and accelerated the handover of the Missions to the local clergy, thereby spelling the formal end of the Mission. Meanwhile, the state was left, once again, to grapple with what it meant to be a Thai and the consequences of a violated Constitution; consequences that echo, arguably, down to the present day.     The Jesuit Mission and Jihi no Kumi (Confraria de Misericórdia) Takashi GONOI Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo Introduction During the 80-year period starting when the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier and his party arrived in Kagoshima in August of 1549 and propagated their Christian teachings until the early 1630s, it is estimated that a total of 760,000 Japanese converted to Chris- tianity. Followers of Christianity were called “kirishitan” in Japanese from the Portu- guese christão. As of January 1614, when the Tokugawa shogunate enacted its prohibi- tion of the religion, kirishitan are estimated to have been 370,000. This corresponds to 2.2% of the estimated population of 17 million of the time (the number of Christians in Japan today is estimated at around 1.1 million with Roman Catholics and Protestants combined, amounting to 0.9% of total population of 127 million). In November 1614, 99 missionaries were expelled from Japan. This was about two-thirds of the total number in the country. The 45 missionaries who stayed behind in hiding engaged in religious in- struction of the remaining kirishitan. The small number of missionaries was assisted by brotherhoods and sodalities, which acted in the missionaries’ place to provide care and guidance to the various kirishitan communities in different parts of Japan. During the two and a half centuries of harsh prohibition of Christianity, the confraria (“brother- hood”, translated as “kumi” in Japanese) played a major role in maintaining the faith of the hidden kirishitan. An overview of the state of the kirishitan faith in premodern Japan will be given in terms of the process of formation of that faith, its actual condition, and the activities of the confraria.

    Volume 21, 2020 – Journal of Urban Culture Research Composition Inspired by ASEAN Drums: Sakodai Rangsan Buathong+ & Bussakorn Binson++ (Thailand) Abstract This article describes the research behind a composition named Sakodai which is based on musical dialects found in Cambodia. Cambodia is one of the 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This Cambodian drum inspired composition is one of a set of 11 compositions titled ASEAN Drums where representative drums from each ASEAN country were selected (2 for each drum in Singapore). The drums included are the Sakodai of Cambodia, Sabadchai of Thai- land, Rebana Anak of Brunei, Pat Waing of Myanmar, Debakan of the Philippines, Rebana Ibu of Malaysia, Ping of Lao, Tay Son of Vietnam, Kendang of Indonesia and versions of Chinese drums and Indian Tablas from Singapore. Using these drums, 11 distinctive musical pieces were composed based on Thai traditional music theories and concepts. In this article, the composition inspired by rhythm patterns of the Cambodia Sakodai hand drum has been selected to be presented and discussed. The resulting piece is based on one Khmer dialect comprised of four lines with a medium tempo performed by a modified Thai Kantrum ensemble rooted in the dialect of traditional Khmer folk music from Cambodia. Funaiole 27 October 2014 Word Count: 79,419 iii Abstract This thesis examines the foreign policy evolution of Japan from the time of its modernization during the mid-nineteenth century though the present. It is argued that infringements upon Japanese sovereignty and geopolitical vulnerabilities have conditioned Japanese leaders towards power seeking policy obJectives. The core variables of statehood, namely power and sovereignty, and the perception of state elites are traced over this broad time period to provide a historical foundation for framing contemporary analyses of Japanese foreign policy. To facilitate this research, a unique framework that accounts for both the foreign policy preferences of Japanese leaders and the external constraints of the international system is developed. Neoclassical realist understandings of self-help and relative power distributions form the basis of the presented analysis, while constructivism offers crucial insights into ideational factors that influence state elites.
