November 12, 2013 iii ABSTRACT A STUDY OF ANTHROPOMORPHIC FIGURINES IN THE NEOLITHIC OF SOUTHWEST ASIA AND SOUTHEASTERN EUROPE Carl T. Feagans, M.A. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2013 Supervising Professor: Karl M. Petruso Anthropomorphic figurines resemble people, very often the people who created them. Thus, these figurines stand to provide insight into their cultures perhaps from the perspective of the original members of the culture. Researchers in figurine studies often speculate on the purposes of figurines and attempt to interpret their meanings. This study attempts to examine anthropomorphic figurines of the Neolithic in Southwest Asia and Southeastern Europe through cataloged and compared physical characteristics of the figurines themselves gathered from published data into a relational database. Figurine data are then imported into statistical software for analysis. The data produced in this study support the early hypothesis that a disproportionate number of figurines are representative of the female sex compared to male. The data also strengthen newer hypotheses that asexual figurines are equally disproportionate.     Cambridge Archaeological Journal 8:2 (1998), pp. 207-37 Dancing and the Beginning of Art Scenes in the Early Village Communities of the Near East and Southeast Europe Yosef Garfinkel Dancing is depicted in the earliest art of the ancient Near East. It appears in many variations from the ninth to the sixth millennium BP over a vast geographical range. This article discusses the dancing performance, the social context of the dance and cognitive aspects of the dancing scenes. Ethnographic observations are used in order to gain a wider view of dancing and dancing scenes in pre-state societies. A correlation can be observed between art, symbolism, religion and social organization. These sites were occupied during the 6th millennium BC (calibrated) and are therefore contemporary with sites in other parts of the southern Levant that are attributed to the Wadi Rabah culture. The assemblages are analyzed from a stylistic perspective, broadly defined, which includes an examination of technological style in addition to a more traditional examination of vessel form and surface treatment. Different stages in the pottery production sequence are investigated using a range of analytical techniques, including thin-section petrography and xeroradiography. While there are some similarities between the assemblages, there are also some noticeable differences. The results of the pottery analysis are used to explore the nature of community in the context of the Late Neolithic. A critique of more traditional archaeological approaches to prehistoric communities leads to a re-conceptualization of community that combines interactional and ideational perspectives. Similarities in pottery among the sites, especially technological similarities, suggest that pottery producers may have comprised a dispersed community of practice. At the same time, pottery may have also been a symbolic marker of community boundaries.

Wnrscnxnn The Yarmukian Culture, considered to belong to the Pottery Neolithic A stage, was first discovered at Sha'ar Hagolan in the central Jordan Valley. Among the numerous finds were over 80 figurines as well as a number of river pebbles with incisions and cup shaped cavities, many of them showing traces of red ochre paint (Stekelis, 196f, 1972). The pebbles display respectively the recurrent features of horizontal incisions combined with shallow vertical lines, parallel linear or wavy incisions, crossing linear incisions, squares and net patterns and cupmarks. Pebbles with incision patterns, similar to those from Sha'ar Hagolan, have in the meantime been reported from Munhatta in the Jordan Valley @errot, 1969), from the "Néolithique Ancien,' at Byblos (Cauvin, 1972) (l) and from a neolithic site in Iran (Hole, Flannery and Neely, 1969). The fertility concept which apparently motivated the art they represent, appears to have given birth to other basic ideas manifested in a complex of cult symbols. The artistic motif of the cloud, releasing rain, occurs in regions with wann dry seasons in widely dispersed areas. Gimbutas (1974) writes that symbolic expressions for water were reflected in images in the Balkan Peninsular, particularly in its driest regions, during the sixth millenium. All Saints, Wighton from the east 2 Abstract When, how, by whom and in what circumstances were Norfolk’s medieval churches rebuilt in the long fifteenth century? Despite the importance of this extraordinary and historic burst of architectural creativity, the answers to these key questions have long proved elusive. A perceived lack of archaeological and documentary evidence has left historians largely in the dark. This thesis addresses the gap in our knowledge by focusing on a single church and village - All Saints in Wighton, near the north coast of the county. The choice of such an apparently narrow subject has allowed a sustained and intense focus on both the fabric of the building and the scattered, partial evidence which survives in the archives. And while the focus has been narrow, the approach taken has been broad and creative. It has included an analysis of masons’ marks, the counting of arch voussoirs, an unusually wide, eclectic and exhaustive collation and investigation of surviving documents, together with detailed comparisons with other churches in the vicinity. As such it aims to offer a new model for architectural and social historical research and - hopefully - it will be regarded as a success.

    In Search of the Origins of Lower Egyptian Pottery: A New Approach to Old Data Studies in African Archaeology 16 Poznań Archaeological Museum 2018 Chapter 1 Introduction The oldest Lower Egyptian pottery has been recorded at sites on the northern shore of Lake Qarun in the Fayum Depression and is dated to the middle of the 6th millennium BC. The area was inhabited by groups known in archaeological stud- ies as the Fayumian or Fayum A culture, the first farming and breeding communi- ties in Egypt (see Krzyżaniak, 1977: 57-68; Midant-Reynes, 2000: 100-108; Tassie, 2014: 227-238). During the Neolithic period, clay vessels became common uten- sils and today constitute an important part of archaeological assemblages from all known Neolithic sites in the areas of the Fayum, Merimde, Sais, and Wadi Hof. 1.1. Aims and outline of the study Theories explaining the emergence of the first pottery in Lower Egypt have been largely affected by its coexistence with the remains of domesticated plants and animals. The concepts of making and using new types of containers were sup- posed to have been introduced to Lower Egypt from outside, as an element of the Neolithic package. Such a hypothesis matched the classical model of the Neo- lithic spreading westwards from the Levant. Newcomers from the Near East were supposed to have introduced new subsistence strategies to Lower Egypt, together with other elements of the Neolithic package, such as clay vessels. Apart from Levantine hypotheses, an assumption pointing to the eastern Sahara as a source of the Neolithic pottery of Lower Egypt has been proposed.
