Тімірязєвська, 1 БУДОВА КОРЕНІВ ТА ОСОБЛИВОСТІ ЇХ РОСТУ В OXALIS TETRAPHYLLA CAV. (OXALIDACEAE R. BR.) Запропоновано новий термін для позначення видозміненого додаткового ріпоподібного кореня у цибулинної Oxalis tetra- phylla Cav. — «стрижнеподібний» корінь. Розглянуто адаптивну пластичність та сезонний характер зміни мичкува- тої кореневої системи на стрижнеподібну в O. tetraphylla. Показано, що закладання додаткових коренів відбувається виключно в зоні шкірястих лусок, з яких починається річний приріст цибулини. «Ефемерний коренеплід» утворюється внаслідок зростання нижньої частини стебла-денця з апікальною частиною стрижнеподібного кореня. Установлено наявність двох типів додаткових коренів — стрижнеподібних (контрактильних, ріпоподібних, запасаючих, у кіль- кості 1-2) і шнуроподібних (неконтрактильних, живильних, тонких, численних). Виявлено, що шнуроподібні та стриж- неподібні корені, які виникають одночасно і не відрізняються морфологічно, в процесі росту зазнають значних морфо- логічних перетворень з перерозподілом функцій. THE NATURAL HISTORY OF UPPER STURT, SOUTH AUSTRALIA PART I: VEGETATION HISTORY, FLORA AND MACROFUNGI OF A MESSMATE STRINGYBARK FOREST Tony Robinson and Julia Haska PO Box 47 UPPER STURT SA 5156 Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT: An area of Eucalyptus obliqua, Messmate Stringybark Forest in Upper Sturt, Mt Lofty Ranges, South Australia was studied over a 38 year period. The land use history since the area was first settled by Europeans in 1843, to the present day is summarized. The area is now known to support 249 species of plants of which 105 species are introduced and 64 species of macrofungi of which at least 3 are introduced. Although the area has undergone many changes since European settlement it remains an important area of remnant native vegetation. There are ongoing challenges from weed invasion, overgrazing by over-abundant kangaroos and introduced koalas and from potential damage by severe wildfire KEY WORDS: Upper Sturt, land use history, forest, flora, fungi, vegetation INTRODUCTION: This is the first of three papers describing revegetation of cleared land adjacent to areas of relatively natural remnant native vegetation. In this paper, elements of the vegetation, flora and fungi are described in a study area at 16 Pole Road, Upper Sturt in the Mt Lofty Ranges. The second paper describes the vertebrate and invertebrate fauna of the area, while the third paper provides results of fauna and vegetation monitoring in sample sites established in both the re-vegetated area and the remnant natural vegetation in the Upper Sturt study area. A second series of three papers will cover the flora and fauna and a more extensive revegetation program on a study area on the western end of Kangaroo Island (in prep.). -

Roets1, K.C. Oberlander1, L.L. Dreyer2 Key words Abstract South Africa has a rich, but scantily surveyed, desert flora. Documenting annual and geophytic species in this biome is challenging, as they usually only flower after adequate precipitation, which is characteristically erratic Oxalidaceae and infrequent. Recent floristic surveys in the Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier Park were conducted after abnormally Oxalis petricola high precipitation and revealed the presence of numerous potentially new plant taxa, including two new members O. rubricallosa of the genus Oxalis. These taxa are clearly morphologically distinct from any known species. Here we explore the phylogeny relationships of these species to other southern African species based on analyses of Internal Transcribed Spacer taxonomy (ITS) and trnS-trnG DNA sequence data. Molecular data and morphological comparisons show that these collections represent new species closely allied to Oxalis pes-caprae, O. compressa, O. copiosa and O. haedulipes. Accordingly we describe them here as O. petricola and O. rubricallosa. Oxalis petricola is known from one isolated population of fewer than 500 individuals and is probably of special conservation concern. Oxalis rubricallosa is known from two small populations. The belated discovery of a large and showy species such as O. rubricallosa highlights the urgent need for more extensive floristic surveys of southern African desert regions. The loss i.e., the decrease of biodiversity, does not only have negative effects on vegetation and animals, but also on humans. If nature is doing well, people are doing well. In order to counteract the loss, this bachelor thesis attempts to increase plant and insect biodiversity at a specific location with insect-friendly seed mixtures and by measuring the change using comparison areas. Accordingly, the two research questions were addressed: (1) "How does plant-biodiversity change in the backyard and front yard on the seed mixture plot compared to plant-biodiversity in the backyard and front yard next to the seed mixture plot?" and (2) "How does insect-biodiversity change in the backyard and front yard on the seed mixture plot compared to insect-biodiversity in the backyard and front yard next to the seed mixture plot?" To answer these research questions and to obtain more suitable data, a wildflower strip was established in the backyard and one in the front yard, each with an adjacent reference field, to ensure equal environmental conditions and to detect changes in flora and fauna.
