TheheavenlyactivitiesperformedbyourresurrectedandascendedLordare sevenfold: HIS HIGH PRIESTLY WORK • Functioningasourforerunner “Andtheseventhangelsounded;andthereweregreatvoicesinheaven,saying, ThekingdomsofthisworldarebecomethekingdomsofourLord,andofhis Christ;andheshallreignforeverandeverWhithertheforerunnerisforus entered,evenJesus,madeanhighpriestforeveraftertheorderofMelchisedec” (Heb.6:19,20). Jesusisdescribedhereasourforerunner.Thiswordhasbeenassociatedwitha smallboatcalledaforerunner.Intheancientworldlargeoceanvesselsoften experienceddifficultywhenapproachingtheshallowGreekharbors.To counteractthis,asmallforerunnerboatwouldoftenbesentouttohelpsecure thevessel’sanchorwithintheharboritself.Dr.KennethWuestwrites: Theanchorofthebelieveristherefore,fastenedwithintheveilofthe HolyofHoliesofheaven.Wehavesomerichfigureshere.Thispresent lifeisthesea;thesoul…ofthebeliever,asatempesttossedship,isheld bytheanchorwithintheveil,fastenedbyfaithtotheblessedreality withintheveil. Anditholds,myanchorholds;Blowyourwildestthen,Ogale, Formyanchorholds,itfirmlyholds. • Preparingaplaceforus 1.Thisplace(actually,acity)ispromisedbyJesusinJohn14. “InmyFather'shousearemanymansions:ifitwerenotso,Iwouldhave toldyou.Igotoprepareaplaceforyou” (John14:2). 2.Thisplace(city)isdescribedinRev.21. “AndIJohnsawtheholycity,new,comingdownfromGodoutof heaven,preparedasabrideadornedforherhusband…Andhecarriedme awayinthespirittoagreatandhighmountain,andshewedmethatgreat city,theholyJerusalem,descendingoutofheavenfromGod,Havingthe gloryofGod:andherlightwaslikeuntoastonemostprecious,evenlikea jasperstone,clearascrystal…Andthecityhadnoneedofthesun,neither ofthemoon,toshineinit:forthegloryofGoddidlightenit,andtheLambis thelightthereof” (Rev.21:2,10,11,23). • Givingspiritualgiftstohispeople “Butuntoeveryoneofusisgivengraceaccordingtothemeasureofthegiftof Christ.Whereforehesaith,Whenheascendeduponhigh,heledcaptivity captive,andgavegiftsuntomen…Andhegavesome,apostles;andsome, prophets;andsome,evangelists;andsome,andteachers;Forthe perfectingofthe,fortheworkoftheministry,fortheedifyingofthebody ofChrist:Tillweallcomeintheunityofthefaith,andoftheknowledgeofthe SonofGod,untoaperfectman,untothemeasureofthestatureofthefulness ofChrist” (Eph.4:7,8,1113). AspiritualgiftisasupernaturalabilitygivenbyChristthroughtheHolySpirit (1Cor.12:711)tothebelieveratthemomentoftoaccomplishatwo foldpurpose: 1.ToglorifyGod(Rev.4:11) 2.Toedifythe(Eph.4:12) 2 • Offeringencouragementtohispeople “Seeingthenthatwehaveagreathighpriest,thatispassedintotheheavens, JesustheSonofGod,letusholdfastourprofession.Forwehavenotanhigh priestwhichcannotbetouchedwiththefeelingofourinfirmities;butwasinall pointstemptedlikeasweare,yetwithoutsin.Letusthereforecomeboldlyunto thethroneofgrace,thatwemayobtain,andfindgracetohelpintimeof need” (Heb.4:1416). “Whereforeseeingwealsoarecompassedaboutwithsogreatacloudof witnesses,letuslayasideeveryweight,andthesinwhichdothsoeasilybeset us,andletusrunwithpatiencetheracethatissetbeforeus,Lookingunto Jesustheauthorandfinisherofourfaith;whoforthejoythatwassetbefore himenduredthecross,despisingtheshame,andissetdownattherighthand ofthethroneofGod.Forconsiderhimthatenduredsuchcontradictionofsinners againsthimself,lestyebeweariedandfaintinyourminds” (Heb.12:13). • Makinghighpriestlyprayersforus “Whoishethatcondemneth?ItisChristthatdied,yearather,thatisrisen again,whoisevenattherighthandofGod,whoalsomakethintercessionfor us” (Rom.8:34). “WhereforeheisablealsotosavethemtotheuttermostthatcomeuntoGodby him,seeingheeverlivethtomakeintercessionforthem” (Heb.7:25). “ForChristisnotenteredintotheholyplacesmadewithhands,whicharethe figuresofthetrue;butintoheavenitself,nowtoappearinthepresenceofGod forus” (Heb.9:24). “Mylittlechildren,thesethingswriteIuntoyou,thatyesinnot.Andifanyman sin,wehaveanadvocatewiththeFather,JesusChristtherighteous” (1John2:1). ManybelieversfeeltheapostlePaulwasthegreatestandmostspiritualChristian whoeverlived.Certainlyhewasapowerfulandeffectiveprayerwarrior.When PaultalkedwithGod,prisonswereshaken,doorswereopened,chainswere loosed,andpeopleweresaved(Acts16:2534)!Withallthisinmindletus supposethatinthemidstofyourdarkesthourofpainandgriefthephonerings andtheapostlePaulisontheothersideoftheline. “FellowChristian”,hebegins,“IjustwantedyoutoknowIamverymuchaware concerningyourterriblesufferings,andthereforeplantospendthenext24 hoursonmykneescryingoutinprayerjustforyou!”

3 Whatanincrediblereassuranceandcomfortthatwouldbe!Thinkofit—the greatapostlePaul,writerofhalftheNewTestamentisprayingforyou!But wait!Amidstyourtearsandtravailyounowhearanothervoice. “Mydearchild,youneedtoknowIamfullyacquaintedwithallyoursadgrief anddespair.Therefore,IplantodotodaythatwhichIhavepreviouslydone sincethetimeofyoursalvationandwillcontinuetodoaslongasyoulive,and thatistospendeverysinglesecondofeverysingleminuteofeverysinglehour ofeverysingledayatmyFather’srighthand, PRAYING FOR YOU! ” Wouldnotthisserveasablessedbalmtosootheone’swoundedsoul?Wouldit nothealtherawhurtofthehumanheart?Indeeditwouldandshould,forthis isexactlywhattheSaviorisdoingatthisverymomentforeachbelieverreading thesewords. Note: “Whoishethatcondemneth?ItisChristthatdied,yearather,thatisrisen again,whoisevenattherighthandofGod,whoalsomakethintercessionfor us” (Rom.8:34). “Noryetthatheshouldofferhimselfoften,asthehighpriestenterethintothe holyplaceeveryyearwithbloodofothers” (Heb.9:25). HereHefunctionsinatwofoldmanner: 1. Actingasourintercessor(duetotheweaknessandfrailtiesofthe believer) Whileonearth,ourLordoncetoldPeter: “Simon,Simon,behold,Satanhathdesiredtohaveyou,thathemaysift youaswheat:ButIprayedforthee,thatthyfaithfailnot” (Luke22:31,32). AccordingtomanyNewTestamentpassages,theSaviorcontinuesto performthisblessedministryforHispeoplefromheaven. “WhereforeheisabletosavethemtotheuttermostthatcomeuntoGod byhim,seeingheeverlivethtomakeintercessionforthem” (Heb.7:25). 2. Actingasouradvocate(duetothesinsofthebeliever) “Ifweconfessoursins,heisfaithfulandjusttoforgiveusoursins,and tocleanseusfromallunrighteousness” (1John1:9).

4 “Mylittlechildren,thesethingswriteIuntoyou,thatyesinnot.Andif anymansin,wehaveanadvocatewiththeFather,JesusChristthe righteous” (1John2:1). “AndIheardaloudvoicesayinginheaven,Nowiscomesalvation,and strength,andthekingdomofourGod,andthepowerofhisChrist:forthe accuserofourbrethreniscastdown,whichaccusedthembeforeourGod dayandnight” (Rev.12:10). PerhapsthefamedmusicianCharlesWesleyhadthisparticularministryof Christinmindwhenhewrotethewordstohisgreathymn, AriseMySoul Arise. Millionshavebeenthrilledathiswondrousphrases: Arise,mysoul,arise.Shakeoffthyguiltyfears. ThebleedingSacrificeInmybehalfappears. BeforethethronemySuretystands—Mynameiswritten OnHishands,MynameiswrittenonHishands. Heeverlivesabove,Formetointercede, Hisallredeeminglove,Hispreciousbloodtoplead. Hisbloodatonedforallourrace,Andsprinklesnowthe Throneofgrace,Andsprinklesnowthethroneofgrace. FivebleedingwoundsHebears,ReceivedonCalvary; Theypoureffectualprayers,Theystronglypleadforme: “Forgivehim,Oforgive,”theycry,“Norletthatransomed Sinnerdie!Norletthatransomedsinnerdie!” TheFatherhearsHimpray,Hisdearanointedone; HecannotturnawayThepresenceofHisSon. HisSpiritanswerstotheblood,AndtellsmeIam BornofGod,AndtellsmeIambornofGod. MyGodisreconciled;Hispard’ningvoiceIhear. HeownsmeforHischild;Icannolongerfear. WithconfidenceInowdrawnigh,And“Father,Abba, Father!”cry,And“Father,Abba,Father”cry. • CaringforHischurches “IwasintheSpiritontheLord'sday,andheardbehindmeagreatvoice,asofa trumpet,Saying,IamAlphaandOmega,thefirstandthelast:and,Whatthou seest,writeinabook,andsendituntothesevenchurcheswhichareinAsia; untoEphesus,anduntoSmyrna,anduntoPergamos,anduntoThyatira,and untoSardis,anduntoPhiladelphia,anduntoLaodicea.AndIturnedtoseethe voicethatspakewithme.Andbeingturned,Isawsevengoldencandlesticks; AndinthemidstofthesevencandlesticksonelikeuntotheSonofman,clothed 5 withagarmentdowntothefoot,andgirtaboutthepapswithagoldengirdle. Hisheadandhishairswerewhitelikewool,aswhiteassnow;andhiseyeswere asaflameoffire;Andhisfeetlikeuntofinebrass,asiftheyburnedina furnace;andhisvoiceasthesoundofmanywaters.Andhehadinhisright handsevenstars:andoutofhismouthwentasharptwoedgedsword:andhis countenancewasasthesunshinethinhisstrength.AndwhenIsawhim,Ifell athisfeetasdead.Andhelaidhisrighthanduponme,sayinguntome,Fear not;Iamthefirstandthelast:Iamhethatliveth,andwasdead;and,behold,I amaliveforevermore,Amen;andhavethekeysofhellandofdeath.Writethe thingswhichthouhastseen,andthethingswhichare,andthethingswhich shallbehereafter;Themysteryofthesevenstarswhichthousawestinmyright hand,andthesevengoldencandlesticks.Thesevenstarsaretheangelsofthe sevenchurches:andthesevencandlestickswhichthousawestaretheseven churches…UntotheangelofthechurchofEphesuswrite;Thesethingssaithhe thatholdeththesevenstarsinhisrighthand,whowalkethinthemidstofthe sevengoldencandlesticks” (Rev.1:1020;2:1). 1. InthisamazingpassagetheapostleJohn,ontheIsleofPatmos,seesthe resurrectedandglorifiedChriststandingamongsevengoldenlampstands, dressedinthegarbofahighpriest.Heistoldthatthelampstands symbolizelocalchurchesonearth. 2. Thismarvelouspassagedescribesthefinalofthree“stances,”asitwere, oftheresurrectedChristinheaven.Heisseen: a.Sitting(Heb.10:12) b.Standing(Acts7:56) c.Walking(Rev.2:1) ● WorkingthroughHispeople “Verily,verily,Isayuntoyou,Hethatbelievethonme,theworksthatIdoshall hedoalso;andgreaterworksthantheseshallhedo;becauseIgountomy Father” (John14:12). 1. Itistobeunderstoodhereofcoursethattheword“greater”refersto quantityandnotquality.ThisissimplytosayJesus,actingthroughthe HolySpirit,wouldassignHispeopletoperformthosethingsHeHimself didnotdowhileonearth. 2.Thesetaskswouldinclude: a.WritingChristianbooks,articles,tracts,etc. b.Worldwidepreachingandteachingbywayoftelevision,radio,the internet,etc. c.TranslatingGod’sWordinmanylanguages. d.Constructingbuildingsforlocalchurches. 6 e.OrganizingBibleinstitutes,colleges,andseminariestotrainworkers fortheministry.
