FROM THE ’S DESK On this last Sunday of the Christmas THE BAPTISM season, the Church celebrates the Baptism of the Lord. In today’s we hear contrasting OF THE LORD his baptism of repentance with the baptism that will inaugurate. John the Baptist said that he was baptizing with water, but the one who is to come will baptize with the . John’s baptism was not yet a Christian baptism; it was a preparation for the Christian baptism we celebrate today, through which sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received. In accepting John’s baptism, Jesus, though sinless, united himself with all sinners. The is reported in each of the three Synoptic — Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Clearly, Jesus’ baptism was an event of great significance for Jesus and for the early Christian community. Mark and Luke reported the story from Jesus’ perspective; the voice from heaven is addressed to Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel, the voice from heaven spoke to all who were present. The descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at His baptism showed that something new was beginning through the baptism and ministry of Jesus. The baptism of Jesus is considered an important manifestation of God in the person of Jesus, another epiphany. Jesus’ baptism inaugurated His mission. Mark’s Gospel moved quickly from On coming up out of the water he saw the report of Jesus’ baptism to Jesus’ temptations in the desert to His ministry in the heavens being torn open and the after John’s arrest. The end of the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. ministry of John the Baptist was the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. In an analogous way, our And a voice came from the heavens, baptism inaugurates our mission as . We also discussed how John was the prophet that Isaiah talked about when he said, “Someone is shouting in the desert, ‘Prepare a way of the Lord; make straight a path for Him to travel!’”(:3). We made an analogy of this by referring to the “road” as the path between us and Jesus. We discussed that sometimes obstacles get in the way along the path, such as a tree or boulder. PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH IN HONOR OF THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SAINT’S PROCLAMATION AS PATRON OF THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH

To you, O blessed St. Joseph, we come with our afflictions, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also. Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus has purchased by His Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.

O most watchful guardian of the , defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence. Be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness.

As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.

SUPPORT THE DIOCESAN MISSION COMBINED COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND JANUARY 9TH & 10TH

The Black and Indian Mission Collection exists to help local African American and Native American diocesan communities throughout the United States spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and respond to real and pressing needs. This collection advances causes important to native and African American Catholics.

Catholic Home Missions is the name for dioceses and parishes in the United States, including its territories and former territories, which cannot provide basic pastoral services to Catholics without outside help. Basic pastoral services include Mass and sacraments, religious education, and ministry training for priests, , religious sisters and lay people.

While the Church in Africa is growing, many still lack access to basic resources and pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa supports pastoral projects that foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension.

Propagation of the Faith collection is vital to the missionaries serving in 1,150 dioceses throughout Asia, Africa, parts of Latin America and Europe, and on the Islands of the Pacific. Your generosity makes it possible for local priests, religious, and catechists to reach out to communities, families and children in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances covering more than half the globe.
