Disciple-Making Adv 1/Day 3 The Stages of Jesus’ Ministry Did you know that there are a total of 90 chapters in the Gospel records and in Acts 1 about Jesus Christ’s appearance and ministry in the world? Author and scholar Carl W. Wilson has calculated that the first 5 chapters of a biblical harmony have to do with Christ’s coming into the world, His incarnation. The last 33 chapters focus on Jesus’ death and resurrection (these chapters make up more than a third of the record). Between the first 5 and the final 33 are 52 chapters which describe how Jesus trained the disciples to minister in His name. Wilson concludes that “through the teaching of Jesus, the apostles experienced a way of ministry that made the church unstoppable. A leader may profess that Jesus is the head of his ministry, but when he strays from the principles of Jesus’ ministry, he’s really just taking over himself. Jesus’ methodology keeps everyone aware that He, and He alone, is the head of the church.” In this session, Advanced Track leaders will be challenged to master the various stages of Jesus’ ministry and to discern analogous practices for fruitful contemporary discipleship. Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite Harmony of the Gospels to this Forum session. Suggestions: A Harmony of the Gospels by A.T. Place Saint-Michel The Place Saint-Michel is simple – a triangle between two streets, uniform buildings along both, designed by the same architect, a walk of smooth cobblestone. The centerpiece is St. Michael defeating a devil; far above them are four statues symbolizing the four cardinal virtues of prudence, fortitude, temperance, and justice. This monument came to be because of the 1848 Revolution and a cholera epidemic in Paris that followed it which killed thousands. This idea of abstract concepts given human form had been popular during the Revolution, the big one, representing the kind of big virtues – like the Four Cardinal Virtues – that everyone could strive for, instead of a single human being whose actions and legacy would turn people against each other. Simultaneous with the creation of Place Saint-Michel, Napoleon III’s renovation brought the Boulevard Saint-Michel into being, and that is the next part of our walk. Facing the fountain with the river at your back, walk on Boulevard Saint-Michel, it’s the street to your left. Walk away from the river along that street. Ultimately, you’ll be turning left on Rue des Écoles, but it’ll be about five minutes to get there, and you can listen to the next track on the way. Boulevard Saint-Michel The character of the street you’re on – wide-open space lined with trees and long, harmonious buildings, plus, often, a view of some landmark in the distance – was a central part of the renovation plan, or the Haussmann plan, as it’s also known. -

The Meaning of the Intercessory Ministry of Jesus Christ on Our Behalf in the Heavenly Sanctuary Jiří Moskala Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Andrews University Introduction Adventist theology differentiates between the “complete” atonement accomplished by Jesus Christ on the cross, and the “completed” atonement in relationship to His intercessory ministry in heaven on humanity’s behalf.1 What happened on the cross is a unique, unparalleled, non-repeatable, and unprecedented divine act of salvation (Heb 10:12, 14) from which all the benefits flow out, including the intercessory ministry of Christ for us today.2 1 See, for example, the statement of the former dean of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, Dr. W. Paris History Early History Julius Caesar conquered Paris in 52 B.C. It was then a fishing village, called Lutetia Parisiorum (the Parisii were a Gallic tribe), on the Île de la Cité. Under the Romans the town spread to the left bank and acquired considerable importance under the later emperors. The vast catacombs under Montparnasse and the baths (now in the Cluny Mus.) remain from the Roman period. Legend says that St. Denis, first bishop of Paris, was martyred on Montmartre (hence the name) and that in the 5th cent. St. Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris, preserved the city from destruction by the Huns. On several occasions in its early history Paris was threatened by barbarian and Norman invasions, which at times drove the inhabitants back to the Île de la Cité. Clovis I and several other Merovingian kings made Paris their capital; under Charlemagne it became a center of learning. In 987, Hugh Capet, count of Paris, became king of France. The Capetians firmly established Paris as the French capital. The city grew as the power of the French kings increased. In the 11th cent. the city spread to the right bank. During the next two centuries—the reign of Philip Augustus (1180–1223) is especially notable for the growth of Paris—streets were paved and the city walls enlarged; the first Louvre (a fortress) and several churches, including Notre-Dame, were constructed or begun; and the schools on the left bank were organized into the Univ. of Paris. One of them, the Sorbonne, became a fountainhead of theological learning with Albertus Magnus and St. -

HIS ARTICLE has a simple thesis: the categories with which we Tcustomarily think about religious life are inadequate to the historical reality and that inadequacy is to a large extent responsible for some of the confusion in the Church today about religious life, especially about the relationship to priesthood and ministry of the "regular clergy," i.e. priests living in a religious order or congregation under a rule. This confusion, I further maintain, is harmful to religious orders and congre gations, even those that do not have ordained members, and is also harmful in the long run to the Church as a whole. The confusion has roots deep in our past, but it remained latent or at least virtually unnamed until quite recently. Forcing it ever more into our awareness have been the implications and implementation of certain documents of Vatican Council II, especially Presbyterorum ordinis on the "ministry and life of priests," Optatam totius on the "training of priests," Christus Dominus on the "pastoral office of bishops," and Perfectae caritatis on "the renewal of religious life." An altogether crucial question has emerged: How do religious priests fit in the ministry of the Church? If we turn to the Council, we do not find an altogether satisfactory answer, although we are left free to infer that the specific difference between religious and diocesan priests lies in the fact that the former take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, whereas the latter do not. -

DOG SACRIFICE IN ANCIENT AND MODERN GREECE: FROM THE SACRIFICE RITUAL TO DOG TORTURE (KYNOMARTYRION) Manolis G. Sergis Abstract: The article presents and discusses the custom of kynomartyrion (dog torture) which took place in the Greek lands until the 1980s. In many areas it stopped in the 1930s because of its cruelty. The author begins his discussion with the presentation of some elements that are related to the dog. More spe- cifically, the dog is an animal that entered the humanized environment long ago and belongs to the creatures whose nature is twofold because it is part of the human and the non-human worlds and it has been treated as twofold by at least the Indo-Europeans. It is also maintained that the liminal Hellenistic period was decisive for the formation of folk worship because of the religious syncre- tism and the invasion of demons that dominated in the Eastern Mediterranean. The author points out its remarkable similarities to ancient Greek and Roman (and Indo-European) fertile, cathartic and other sacrificial practices. Due to industrialization of agriculture and rationalization of the magical way of thought of the “traditional” peasant, performance of the custom was transformed into a folkloric, spectacular one with intensely violent and sadistic behaviour on the part of humans in the places where it still took place after 1960. The writer argues that violence was always an inherent characteristic of the custom. None- theless, the archaic, and later folk thinking ritualized the performance and attributed to it a different facet, devoid of any sacred elements, during the 20th century where its inherent violence was manifested in its raw essence. -

THE DEACON: ICON OF JESUS CHRIST THE SERVANT PASTORAL LETTER OF THE BISHOP OF MARQUETTE MOST REVEREND ALEXANDER K. SAMPLE TO THE PRIESTS, DEACONS, AND FAITHFUL OF THE DIOCESE PREFACE The restoration of the diaconate as a permanent ministry in the Latin Church following the Second Vatican Council is seen as “a great and visible sign of the working of the Holy Spirit.”1 Over the years much has been written about the essential identity, role and ministry of the permanent deacon in the life of the Church. There is no doubt that the restoration of the permanent diaconate has been a source of tremendous grace and blessings for the Church. Alongside such blessings, however, there have been some misunderstandings and misinterpretations of the essential identity of the permanent deacon that have led to some confusion regarding his ministerial role in the life and mission of the Church. The Diocese of Marquette has certainly been the grateful beneficiary of the restoration of this ministry since the ordination of our first permanent deacon in 1981. Since that time this local Church has been richly blessed by the witness and sacrifices of the fine men who have received ordination as permanent deacons. We give thanks to God for them and their ministry. Our diocese, however, has not been spared some of the same misunderstandings, misinterpretations and confusion that have been evident in the universal Church. To help study and address some of these important issues surrounding the life and ministry of the permanent deacon in the Diocese of Marquette, a Diaconate Study Committee was formed in January of 2008 to lay out a vision for the future direction of the permanent diaconate in the Diocese of Marquette. -

Canonical Reception History of James
JETS 60/4 (2017): 767–80 DOES NEGLECT MEAN REJECTION? CANONICAL RECEPTION HISTORY OF JAMES CHRIS S. STEVENS* Abstract: Canonicity debates have pivoted on various criteria over the centuries. Today, au- thorship, a primary criterion, is complicated by concerns about pseudonymity and challenges to the linguistic abilities of the apostles. Recent work by David Nienhuis proposes James to be a pseudonymous second-century document. Nienhuis exploits the historical silence and perceived neglect of the Epistle of James to create a scenario against traditional authorship positions. This paper evaluates the validity of his argument. Despite his thorough monograph, underap- preciated aspects of the evidence weaken his work. The case against James being the author of the eponymous epistle put forth by Nienhuis is reexamined on a number of fronts. The evidence suggests that the author was in a position of early ecclesiastical authority, one like James the Just held during the first century. Key words: James, canon, Nienhuis, canonical history, papyri, linguistic dimensions, pseudonymity Debates over the NT canon are receiving reNewed iNterest. While there are new methods of inquiry and newer questions, nevertheless, the debates remain the same. Perhaps no NT text is more debated than the Epistle of James. In fact, NearlY fifty years ago James Brooks said James “had a more difficult time iN acquiriNg canonical status” than other texts.1 David NieNhuis further contends, “No other letter in the NT contains as maNY troubliNg aNd ambiguous features, aNd to this daY no scholarlY consensus exists regarding its point of origin.”2 The seNtimeNt is Not new. Martin Luther called James “an epistle of straw” that “mangles the Scriptures and thereby opposes Paul and all Scripture.”3 Luther eveN put James aNd the other Catholic Epistles (CE) in a different order in an attempt to diminish their canonical significance.4 Determining the canonical reception history of James is not easy.
