Robinson, T & Stanley, J York : On Site Archaeology, Report: OSA08EV06 2009, 53pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: On Site Archaeology The site lay in a micro landscape the had been utilised since at least the Late Iron Age. The evaluation recorded the remains of a Late Iron Age/Roman enclosure, along with the remains of field boundaries and ditch systems. The possible remains of an entrance to a domestic dwelling from the period were discovered along with the inhumations of two individuals and the ritualistic internment of an animal skeleton. This lay at the possible entrance of an enclosure or roundhouse. Medieval agricultural activity was represented on the site, as well as post-medieval quarrying and activity associated with the construction of the war time airfield. [Au(adp)]

Holland A measured walkover survey was undertaken at 15m transect intervals across the proposed route alignment and topsoil strip area. The type of artefacts and relative artefact densities were considered typical of late post-medieval maturing of fields and dumping of domestic refuse. The types of artefacts recovered were dominated by domestic ceramics and other common refuse materials such as glass and clay pipe stems. There was also evidence of field drain fragments. [Au(adp)]

Stanley, J York : On Site Archaeology, Report: OSA08EV07 2008, 32pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: On Site Archaeology Archaeological Investigations Project 2008 Evaluations

The evaluation revealed evidence for medieval activity and probable post-medieval garden activity, sealed by approximately 0.5m of modern garden soil. The medieval remains comprised rubbish pits truncated by linear features, interpreted as drainage ditches that may have served as land divisions. Deep circular pits in the centre of the site may have been representative of industrial activity such as leather working or cloth manufacture. Post holes on the site did not form any discernable structure and may have been of late medieval/post- medieval date. Further archaeological investigation was recommended. [Au(adp)]

Tibbles, J : Field Archaeology, Report: 260 2008, 45pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Humber Field Archaeology The evaluation trenches contained evidence of three phases of site use. The earliest phase comprised a possible Iron Age/Roman pit and gully, although these may have been later. A subsequent watching brief revealed the presence of a large ditch at least 3m wide which, though undated, may have been the southern return of a north-south feature observed on a nearby site containing later 4th century pottery. If this were the case, a large enclosure may have been positioned next to the later crossing point of Driffield Beck. An early medieval presence was represented by several pits and a shallow linear gully to the rear of the site, with two of the pits containing late 9th to 11th century pottery, and a third probable 10th to late-12th century date pottery. Further features of post-medieval date were recorded, some probably associated with the construction of the cottages, including a possible gravel extraction pit in the garden area. The foundations of one of the cottages were located briefly in a post hole cut for a temporary site fence. [Au(abr)]

Tibbles, J Kingston upon Hull : Humber Field Archaeology, Report: 282 2008, 49pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Humber Field Archaeology Five trenches were excavated, and demonstrated evidence of four phases of site use. The earliest phase consisted of possible Iron Age/Roman or early medieval features, followed by a series of later medieval pits, gullies and ditches possibly associated with the nearby Scheduled Norman motte, Swan Hill, and the later medieval manor. A post-medieval presence was represented by a shallow linear gully to the west of the site. 20th century landscaping and modern services were encountered. No further work was recommended, as the development was not thought to impact upon any significant archaeological remains. [Au(adp)]

A similar limestone spread in Trench 2 sealed earlier external surfaces or dumps. These later features indicated activity in the area between the 2nd and 4th centuries, with the presence of Samian tableware and an amphora fragment reflecting the sites' proximity to Petvaria. The surfaces were overlain by silt deposits and windblown sand. [Au(abr)]

preserved the remains of wooden shoring at its base. The ditch had a relatively short life-span and had collapsed at the time of its backfill. It may have been a military practice trench of the kind built by infantry battalions during the Great War. Borehole sampling indicated substantial buried deposits across the site, with considerable variations in depth suggesting that the area was landscaped considerably over the past couple of centuries. In particular a borehole located to the rear of Chequer House suggested that deposits relating to the documented rear gardens and ponds may still survive. [Au(abr)]

Rowe, M Saxilby : Pre-Construct Archaeology (Lincoln), Report: 481 2008, 23pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Pre-Construct Archaeology (Lincoln) An evaluation was undertaken on land to the rear of The Manor House, Thorpe-in-Balne, Doncaster A single evaluation trench was excavated within the footprint of a proposed extension to the existing "Manor House". This building was constructed in the 1980s, replacing a farmhouse and associated agricultural building. The site lay within a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument [Thorpe-in-Balne moated site, chapel and fishpond]. Well- preserved archaeological features/deposits were encountered within 200mm of the existing ground surface. These included wall footings and an associated possible surface. Negative features were also recorded, including an in-filled ditch and a possible pit or partial recut of the ditch. Stratigraphically, the ditch was the earliest archaeological feature encountered. Pottery sherds recovered from fills within the ditch and a later partial recut or pit provided a broad date range for these features of 12th-13th and 13th-14th centuries respectively. Residual pottery was also recovered from these features, including a single sherd of a middle Saxon vessel, dated to the late 7th-mid-late 9th century, and several sherds of Saxo-Norman material of late-10th-late-12th century date. Two limestone wall footings were also identified and, although these remain undated, one appeared to have been built after the ditch had silted up. Worked stone, stylistically dated to the late-13th century or later, was recovered from demolition material associated with these walls. A clay surface sealed by a charcoal-rich deposit, possibly representing the floor level of one of the wall footings was also recorded. Both footings and the clay surface were sealed below the construction horizon of the former farm, the surviving remains of which included a third wall footing and cobbled surfacing. Some modern intrusion was recorded in the form of a service trench associated with the existing building. [Au(abr)]

Trench 2 was placed to attempt to locate the wall which formed the southern limit of the original structure, as well as any surviving internal floor surfaces. A third trench was not excavated as the development proposal would have caused minimal disturbance to this area. Trench 1 identified two substantial sandstone structural elements, likely to have been associated with the mills ancillary buildings. Also identified in Trench 1 were a number of small cut features in an area which would have originally been outside the mill buildings. Trench 2 did not identify any structural elements associated with the mill, but did locate a stone-filled land drain which seemed likely to have predated the corn mill buildings. [Au(abr)]

Dendrochronological analysis of timbers from the buildings had provided dates of AD1455/6 for the barn and AD1448 for the house. The evaluation comprised a total of ten trenches evenly distributed around the site. Only two of the trenches, Trenches 5 and 8, revealed features of archaeological interest. Two separate ditch features were identified, one of which contained three sherds of medieval pottery. The size and profile of the ditches suggested they were contemporary. The evidence recovered to date suggested a limited amount of activity on the site in the medieval period, probably related to agricultural or domestic enclosures. [Au(abr)]

Two trenches were excavated within the proposed development area, exposing a series of features of possibly late Saxon and 12th to 13th century date, sealed beneath a substantial flood horizon of late medieval/post-medieval date. This clay layer was overlain by a spread of Victorian refuse. [Au(abr)]

For the most part, it was concluded that the majority of the site was archaeologically insignificant. However, three linear ditches and two small pits associated with Iron Age pottery were exposed in one trench towards the south of the investigation. There was a strong possibility that these features were associated with a linear boundary system that had been masked by overlying ridge and furrow, with which it appeared to share a common alignment. Noakes, H & Town, M Alston : North Pennines Archaeology Ltd., Report: CP/680/08 2008, 50pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: North Pennines Archaeology Ltd. A field evaluation was undertaken of the proposed Holly Bank Extension to Allerton Park Quarry. The previous works at the quarry included an open area excavation, carried out in to the south of the proposed extension area. This excavation found evidence of a Late Roman farmstead enclosure comprising two large ditched enclosures separated by a trackway, with further linear elements parallel to the east and west sides. The northern enclosure was demarcated by a substantial V-shaped ditch. Numerous internal features were recorded including pits, intercutting curvilinear and linear ditches, and post holes. On the basis of evidence from the excavation, it was suggested that the site represented a large late Roman native farmstead. Following on from the 2007 excavation a geophysical survey of the proposed extraction area was carried out. Results demonstrated that the archaeological activity uncovered during the 2007 excavation of the quarry, continued and extended over a large part of the southern and western parts of the proposed extension. However, the extent to which the identified anomalies provided an accurate indication of surviving sub surface archaeological features was not clear. As a result, an evaluation consisting of fifteen trenches and two test pits was undertaken in July 2008. Two of the geophysical anomalies previously identified were specifically targeted and tested, and a general coverage of "background" trenches were excavated to examine areas shown as negative or blank by the geophysical survey. In three of the trenches, no archaeological or modern features were observed. Modern or Victorian field drains, comprising of either ceramic pipes or compacted stone, were observed in other trenches. Extensive animal burrowing was also observed. Archaeological remains were encountered in five trenches. This comprised the terminus of an undated linear featurefour further undated linear features, a palaeochannel was uncovered. In Trench 14 a small linear feature was uncovered, the position of this feature correlated with a projected geophysical anomaly. No finds were obtained from this feature. In Trench 15, the archaeological evidence comprised a linear feature. No finds were recovered from it; however, it exhibited a V-shaped profile on the eastern side of the trench, which tentatively suggested a Roman date. The linear feature appeared to have been recut by a further ditch. The evaluation at Allerton Park revealed that some well-preserved archaeological deposits existed in specific zones within the proposed extraction area, but large parts of the proposed extension were likely to be clear of archaeology. McComish, J M York : York Archaeological Trust, Report: 2008/57 2008, 18pp, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: York Archaeological Trust Two trenches were excavated, one within a new extension and one to the immediate rear of the building. Within Trench 1, natural sand was truncated by two pits, which were in turn sealed by a build-up of horticultural soil. The uppermost features were modern drains/sewer pipes. Within Trench 2, natural sand was sealed by a cobble/gravel surface interpreted as being of Roman date. The surface was truncated by a number of pit cuts, of medieval date. There pits were beneath a build up of horticultural soil which was in turn beneath an 18th century wall. The hall had been demolished at some stage and sealed by dumped deposits of modern date.
