The Humber Metro
The Humber Metro The Humber Metro is a very futuristic concept, depending, as it does, on the existence of the Humber tunnel between Goxhill and the approach to Paragon station, proposed as part of HS10 in the ‘HS Eastern Routes and Service Plans’ article. As noted there, although the tunnel will be built to GC gauge, it is intended from the outset to be shared with Regional Metro traffic between Cleethorpes and Hull, which will at least initially be of UK loading gauge. The Humber Metro covers the area from Selby and Goole in the west to Cleethorpes and Withernsea in the east, and from Grimsby in the south to Bridlington in the north. The core section, built to GC-gauge, as all new infrastructure should be, runs in tunnel under the centre of Hull between Paragon (LL) and Cannon St. (former H&B) stations, with a connection to the Hornsea / Withernsea lines just before Wilmington, and another to the Beverley line at Cottingham. Other than that (and the Humber tunnel, of course,) it takes over the routes of existing and former, long closed, branches. The proposed metro services fall into two groups, either cross-river or west-east along the north bank. Shaw and G. Walbridge A feature of the year was the invasion of Arctic Redpolls Carduelis homemanni and the associated mass of submitted material. Before circulations began, we feared the worst: a huge volume of contradictory reports with differing dates, places and numbers and probably a wide range of criteria used to identify the species. In the event, such fears were mostly unfounded. Several submissions were models of clarity and co-operation; we should like to thank those who got together to sort out often-confusing local situations and presented us with excellent files. Despite the numbers, we did not resort to nodding reports through: assessment remained strict, but the standard of description and observation was generally high (indeed, we were able to enjoy some of the best submissions ever). Even some rejections were 'near misses', usually through no fault of the observers. Occasionally, one or two suffered from inadequate documentation ('Looked just like bird A' not being quite good enough on its own). Having said that, we feel strongly that the figures presented in this report are minimal and a good many less-obvious individuals were probably passed over as 'Mealies' C. flammea flammea, often when people understandably felt more inclined to study the most distinctive Arctics. The general standard of submissions varies greatly. We strongly encourage individuality, but the use of at least the front of the standard record form helps. -

Further concerns relate to the emergency and national safety of vessels, antisocial behaviour, visual amenity and protected views, lack of transparency, highway and walkway congestion and that the proposal is contrary to policy. -

Prior to development this coastline would have been characterised by extensive sand dune systems, although only two dune areas remain, Kenfig Burrows and Margam Burrows (to the south of Port Talbot) and the smaller Crymlyn Burrows (to the north of the Neath Estuary). The plan is to continue to manage the risk of coastal erosion and flooding to industrial, residential, non-residential, commercial and amenity assets along the coast, whilst enabling natural evolution of the dunes. There are significant linkages and interdependencies along this frontage and its future evolution, will be dependent upon future management strategies for Port Talbot steelworks, the Port of Port Talbot and the Neath Estuary, which includes the Port of Neath and various leisure functions. Furthermore, it highlights the interconnectivity of the transportation network, and the important role Internal Drainage Boards (IDBs) play in continuing to keep the country, and the economy, moving. “…the interconnected nature of its networks...lends resilience to the sector. However, the “ “ scale and exposed nature of the network leaves it vulnerable to some significant risk.” 2012 Sector Resilience Plan for Critical Infrastructure, Cabinet Office Britain currently faces a number of stresses: a growing population, climate change and a large budgetary deficit. To meet these challenges we need an economically competitive Britain. For any society this must start with ensuring that fundamental building blocks for growth and prosperity are in place. Transport is one of those crucial building blocks. As a nation we are renewing and improving our transportation networks; Crossrail is currently being built underneath Central London; plans are in place for a new Forth crossing (Queensferry Crossing) and for HS2. But new projects are just part of the picture, at the same time we must do what we can to preserve and enhance our existing infrastructure. The flooding experienced across England in November 2012 is a timely reminder about the impact our weather and climate can have on our ability to move people and freight about our country. ADA and its members play their part in helping keep the country moving, regardless of the mode of transportation.
