Here, fellows are introduced to a global network of colleagues and exposed to a variety of museum practices. This summer the British Museum and 11 UK partner museums welcomed 23 fellows from 17 countries to the UK between 2 July and 10 August. Our network The 13th annual ITP summer programme saw the addition of four new countries to our growing global network, which now totals 276 fellows from 43 countries. This year we were joined by fellows from Azerbaijan, Nepal, Philippines and Rwanda – new connections that we hope will develop into long-term, sustainable and rewarding partnerships. Our fellows ITP fellows come from countries that have identified themselves as needing support to develop their museum services. Fellows tend to be in the early stages of their careers or in positions of influence to develop others. They are passionate about collaboration, working internationally and pursuing careers in the museum and cultural sectors. Our mission Through sharing knowledge, skills and experiences, the ITP is working to create and promote a sustainable global network of museum and heritage professionals. While the scope and range of the ITP has grown and developed over the past 13 years, the aims and motivations for the programme remain the same. Our supporters The British Museum’s International Training Programme is entirely externally funded through the generosity of individuals, companies, trusts and foundations. Their support allows the Museum to cover the costs of travel, visas, accommodation and subsistence as well as resources for fellows’ personal research and their institutions’ libraries. It also provides future opportunities for our fellows to join additional development and sustainability projects that aim to ensure the continued development of both our alumni and their institutions.     SUS Member Orientation Package Revised 2015 We welcome you to Singles Under Sail, Inc. SUS members are required to meet certain education requirements. It is mandatory for all NEW members to have met the following requirements by their second membership renewal date: 1) To have completed the SUS Dockside Orientation Class (DOC), AND 2) To have passed either the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's or the U.S. Power Squadron's Basic Boating Course (8 hours minimum), OR provide proof of having held a U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s license, AND 3) To attend an SUS Member Orientation Class (MOC). The NMDC represents the leaders of the UK's national collections and major regional museums. Our members are the national and major regional museums in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the National Archives. While our members are funded by government, the NMDC is an independent, non- governmental organisation. For more information on our activity and a full list of members see our website: www.nationalmuseums.org.uk Summary Museums are a critical part of the UK tourism offer, and visiting museums has never been so popular. Museums continue to develop their offer and operation to attract both domestic and overseas tourists. Museums and heritage continue to be primary reasons to visit Britain. Museums play a very significant role in the development of the regional tourist industry. They are frequently the most visited attraction in a town, city or region. They are also active in workforce development in this aspect of the tourism sector, including via apprenticeships and the sharing of good practice through local networks. Museum partnerships are an excellent and successful way of encouraging regional tourism, as well as building on the success of London. These partnerships have also helped with the regeneration of coastal towns built around culture or heritage. However, despite being so integral to the tourist industry, and the fact that supporting tourism is an economic priority for the Government, local authority and central Government investment for museums has substantially reduced since 2010.

    P a g e | 1 THE CUTTY SARK The “Cutty Sark” was a British clipper ship, aptly named of course as a [clipper for its speed1], which was built in 1869 on the [river Clyde in Scotland2] by the Jock Willis Shipping Corporation.3 It was primarily used to transport tea from China to Great Britain, as well to a lesser extent later in its life, wool from Australia;4 however, with the advent of the steam engines and the creation also of the Suez Canal in 1869, its days of operation as a sailing vessel were numbered, as the steam ships were now prevailing as technologically advanced cargo carriers through the shorter route by the Suez Canal to China. Eventually, the “Cutty Sark” in 1895 was sold to a Portuguese company called “Ferreira and Co.”, where it continued to operate as a cargo ship until 1922, when it was purchased on that year by the retired sea captain Wilfred Dowman, who used it as a training ship in the town of Falmouth in Cornwall.
