[page 3] Revival Emyr Roberts REVIVAL is probably more remote from the thinking of the churches today than it has been since the beginning of Nonconformity in our land, and certainly since the Methodist Revival of over two centuries ago.∗ When at the end of October 1904, with the fire of revival in his heart, Evan Roberts felt compelled to leave the preparatory school in Castellnewydd Emlyn, Carmarthenshire, to hold revival meetings in his home town of Casllwchwr in Glamorgan, Evan Phillips the minister, who had celebrated his seventy- fifth birthday the previous week and well remembered the 1859 Revival, recognized the Spirit in the young student and advised him to go. One wonders what advice he would be given today, were he a student under the same spiritual compulsion. Some of the leaders of the 1904 Revival, such as Joseph Jenkins and W. W. Lewis, had been under the tuition of men like Thomas Charles Edwards in Aberystwyth and John Harris Jones in Trefeca, of whom the former had been profoundly affected by the '59 Revival, and the latter a leader in that same Revival. -

The Welsh The Christian was an evangelical weekly periodical published in London. Its reporting upon the great Welsh Revival started at the time when news of this movement began to appear widely in secular Revival newspapers. These other papers usually reported Robert Evans Robert superficial and spectacular details, and could contain wildly biased views of what was happening. The Christian contained news which aimed at showing the real substance and meaning of the Revival. Making its news coverage of the Revival available to 1904 a new generation is a project well worth while. The author is a retired Uniting Church minister who has written extensively on the history of Australian and New Zealand Evangelism and early revivals. The writer does not wish to be held responsible for the Theological Views put forth, either in the extracts alluded to, or in the sermons. Christmas Evans was a Calvinistic Baptist, and several of his sermons inculcate, to some ex- tent, the peculiar doctrines of that denomination ; though they are generally free from sectarian bias, and may be read with advantage by spiritual Christians of all evange lical creeds. -

The plan covers chapels, churches and monastic landscapes, from the Anglo-Norman period (c. AD 1100) to the present day and from the monastic movements of the medieval period, through the Reformation of the 16th century to the rise of nonconformity and Methodism from the 17th century, and the story of the religious revivals. -

Mission in a Welsh Context: Patterns of Nonconformist Mission in Wales and the Challenge of Contextualisation in the Twenty First Century Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Chester for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by David R. J. Ollerton July 2015 0 Mission in a Welsh Context: Patterns of Nonconformist Mission in Wales and the Challenge of Contextualisation in the Twenty First Century David R. J. Ollerton Abstract This thesis considers aspects of contextualisation in the mission of local churches in twenty-first century Wales. Welsh Nonconformity rose rapidly to a dominant position in Welsh society and culture in the nineteenth century, but has subsequently declined equally rapidly. By the beginning of the twenty-first century its total demise is predicted. The research examines the contextual factors in this decline, and their relevance for possible recovery. Contextualisation is an essential part of missiology, in calibrating appropriate mission to the distinctives of a particular nation or locality. Wales is shown to be a distinctive context for mission, both nationally and regionally, in relation to specific aspects: religious, geographic, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, social and political. Contextual studies have been done for other mission contexts, but not for Wales. This research seeks to address this lack. The thesis first outlines the development of the main approaches in global mission, their underlying assumptions, and their outworking in the mission of local churches in the West. The approaches have been identified as Evangelistic, Lausanne, Missio Dei, Liberal and Emergent. Drawing on hundreds of questionnaire responses and extensive interviews with Nonconformist leaders, the research examines how the different approaches to mission have been expressed in Wales, and how each approach adjusted to each aspect of context. -

Wij lieten onze auto achter en gewapend met gedetailleerde instructies en een overzichtskaart zetten wij er de pas in. Wij konden echter nog niets ontwaren van de kapel waar Christmas Evans ooit gepreekt had. Tenslotte klopten wij aan bij een afgelegen boerderij. Een ruig uitziende man met een baard deed open en stond ons vriendelijk te woord. Ja, hij had wel van Christmas Evans gehoord. -

CHRISTMAS EVANS (1766 - 1838) AND THE BIRTH OF NONCONFORMIST WALES By the decade between 1815 and 1825 Nonconformity seemed destined to become the predominant religious force in Wales. Although Protestant Dissent had been a feature of Welsh religious life since the late 1630s, it was only with the coming of the Evangelical Revival after 1735 that Nonconformity became a popular and populist movement. The Revival made its initial impact almost exclusively upon the Anglican Church, but from 1772 onwards it began not only to permeate the ranks of the older, orthodox Calvinist Dissent - the Baptists and the Independents - but to transform them into something vibrant, zealous and influential. With the secession of the Welsh Calvinistic Methodists from the Anglican body in 1811, evangelical Nonconformity became the single most potent religious force in the land. By 1825 it had succeeded to a remarkable degree in recreating Wales in its own form and image. The subsequent self-perception of the Welsh people only served to reinforce this conviction, that Wales, by the second quarter of the nineteenth century had become incontrovertibly Nonconformist.1 One figure who both represented and contributed towards this religious, cultural and psychological change was the Baptist preacher, Christmas Evans.2 His life spanned the years between 1766 and 1838 and his experiences personified the transformation of the older, more sober and stratified Wales when Anglicanism was the predominant religion into the new, vigorous and ultimately radical Wales of popular Dissent. He was present at the birth of Nonconformist Wales. Christmas Evans was born at Llandysul, in what was then Cardiganshire, now a part of Dyfed, on 25 December 1766, the son of Samuel Evans, shoemaker, and Joanna, his wife.
