The Welsh The Christian was an evangelical weekly periodical published in London. Its reporting upon the great Welsh Revival started at the time when news of this movement began to appear widely in secular Revival newspapers. These other papers usually reported Robert Evans Robert superficial and spectacular details, and could contain wildly biased views of what was happening. The Christian contained news which aimed at showing the real substance and meaning of the Revival. Making its news coverage of the Revival available to 1904 a new generation is a project well worth while. The author is a retired Uniting Church minister who has written extensively on the history of Australian and New Zealand Evangelism and early revivals. But a study of its story provides much instruction in many ways. The information about this revival which appeared in The Christian does not tell its whole story. It only tells the story after the rise to prominence of Evan Roberts. This is because almost no news about the revival had appeared in any of the newspapers before that time. It was with the appearance of Evan Roberts that the revival became reportable news, and its fame spread rapidly. Some people thought that the Revival depended upon the personality of Roberts, but this is certainly not true. Some details appeared in The Christian much later about its early stages, after the revival had been in progress for about a year. Also at a later time, other books were written which explained these earlier stages of the revival. Some of these details are stated here, below. Even earlier details about events which led up to the start of the revival appear in several books which others have written about the revival. These are the books by Mrs. Jessie Penn-Lewis, by the Rev. Seth Joshua, and by the Rev. R.B. Jones. Mr. Joshua was the connectional evangelist for the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist (Presbyterian) Churches. These books also provide the details about how the revival began, and how it developed up until the appearance of Evan Roberts’s ministry. Dr. J. Edwin Orr also has provided some details which he presumably obtained directly in conversation with Evan Roberts in later years. The revival actually began in the village of New Quay, in the church of which the Rev. Joseph Jenkins was the Pastor. The humbled. Pastor called for a testimony to Jesus Christ. She responded, At the morning service in Blaenannerch, Evan Roberts was simply, artlessly, without guile, “I love the Lord Jesus Christ with especially moved during a prayer by Mr. Joshua, when he used the all my heart.” words “Bend us, O Lord.” But it was during the nine o’clock “As soon as these words were uttered, the power of God fell service that Evan Roberts’s crisis experience occurred, involving upon the meeting, and one after another arose and testified or led in this prayer. I am sincerely grateful to the efforts of everyone who has helped contribute to the making of this Plan which is so important for the future of Powys.     S T R A Y S Volume One: !'IARRIAGES Introduction This volume of 'stray' marriages is published with the hope that it will prove of some value as an additional source for the familv historian. For economic reasons, the 9rooms' names only are listed. Often people married many miles from their own parishes and sometimes also away from the parish of the spouse. Tracking down such a 'stray marriage' can involve fruitless and dishearteninq searches and may halt progress for many years. - Included here are 'strays', who were married in another parish within the county of Powys, or in another county. There are also a few non-Powys 'strays' from adjoining counties, particularly some which may be connected with Powys families. For those researchers puzzled and confused by the thought of dealing with patronymics, when looking for their Welsh ancestors, a few are to be found here and are ' indicated by an asterisk. A simple study of these few examples may help in a search for others, although it must be said, that this is not so easy when the father's name is not given. I would like to thank all those members who have helped in anyway with the compilation of this booklet. A second collection is already in progress; please· send any contributions to me.     3.0 The LDP Strategy ® 34.4 3.1 Having established the context and main issues and considerations facing Powys, which are unique to the county, this section draws together the strategy1 for the LDP from 2011 up to 2026. The strategy comprises: Minor Change Section: Paragraph 3.1 Reason: Consequential change to reflect the proposed inclusion of strategic policies in the LDP. The one box, labelled `Materials for a History of Montgomery', contains manuscript volumes comprising a copy of the glossary of the obsolete words and difficult passages contained in the charters and laws of Montgomery Borough by William Illingworth, n.d. [watermark 1820), a volume of oaths of office required to be taken by officials of Montgomery Borough, n.d., [watermark 1823], an account book of the trustees of the poor of Montgomery in respect of land called the Poors Land, 1873-96 (with map), and two volumes of notes, one containing notes on the bailiffs of Montgomery for Dr. Lloyd's article in The Montgomeryshire Collections, Vol. 44, 1936, and the other containing items of Montgomery interest extracted from Archaeologia Cambrensis and The Montgomeryshire Collections; printed material including An Authentic Statement of a Transaction alluded to by James Bland Burgess, Esq., in his late Address to the Country Gentlemen of England and Wales, 1791, relating to the regulation of the practice of county courts, Letters to John Probert, Esq., one of the devisees of the late Earl of Powis upon the Advantages and Defects of the Montgomery and Pool House of Industry, 1801, A State of Facts as pledged by Mr.

    IV. Evan Roberts and Jessie Penn-Lewis Evan Roberts and Jessie Penn-Lewis were the central minister and the most influential expositor,1 respectively, of the Welsh holiness revivalism concentrated from “December 1904 to May 1905,”2 co-opting and eclipsing a genuine revival movement in Wales that had already been taking place. Roberts received infant “baptism a few weeks after his birth on June 8, 1878,”3 and grew up in the Calvinistic Methodist denomination. His “name appears in the church roll for the first time in 1893-94” after taking a “preparation class,”4 but evidence of his own personal conversion is very weak at best.5 A minister claimed that he had been the instrument some time after 1898 of Roberts’ “conversion or consecration,”6 but Roberts himself does not appear to have affirmed that he was born again at that time—indeed, Roberts testified that he was not a Christian until a number of months before the onset of the holiness revival.7 The closest one can come 1 Of course, other men were involved, such as “W. Unfortunately, the publisher has not included any bio­ graphical information about the author. Owen Jones' intention was to write an additional book on other Welsh preachers of note.
