Kummer and its acceptance as type species of Armillaria (Fr.:Fr.) Staude. Due to recognition of different type species over the years and an extremely variable generic concept, at least 274 species and varieties have been placed in Armillaria (or in Armillariella Karst., its obligate synonym). Only about forty species belong in the genus Armillaria sensu stricto, while the rest can be placed in forty-three other modem genera. This study is based on original descriptions in the literature, as well as studies of type specimens and generic and species concepts by other authors. This publication consists of an alphabetical listing of all epithets used in Armillaria or Armillariella, with their basionyms, currently accepted names, and other obligate and facultative synonyms. -

Clavaria diverticulata, Clavulinopsis dimorphica and Clavulinopsis imperata are new species, and Clavaria gibbsiae, Clavaria fumosa and Clavulinopsis helvola are reported for the first time for the country. Illustrations of the basidiomata and the microstructures are provided for all taxa, as well as SEM images of ornamented basidiospores which occur in Clavulinopsis helvola and Ramariopsis kunzei. A key to the Clavariaceae of Brazil is also included. Key words: clavarioid; morphology; taxonomy Introduction Clavariaceae Chevall. (Agaricales) comprises species with various types of basidiomata, including clavate, coralloid, resupinate, pendant-hydnoid and hygrophoroid forms (Hibbett & Thorn 2001, Birkebak et al. 2013). The family was first proposed to accommodate mostly saprophytic club and coral-like fungi that were previously placed in Clavaria Vaill. ex. L., including species that are now in other genera and families, such as Clavulina J.Schröt. -

Nelson Chaves s/n, Recife 50670-420 Brazil *CORRESPONDENCE TO: [email protected] ABSTRACT — Based on an intensive search of literature about clavarioid fungi (Agaricomycetes: Basidiomycota) in Brazil and revision of material deposited in Herbaria PACA and URM, a list of 195 taxa was compiled. These are distributed into six orders (Agaricales, Cantharellales, Gomphales, Hymenochaetales, Polyporales and Russulales) and 12 families (Aphelariaceae, Auriscalpiaceae, Clavariaceae, Clavulinaceae, Gomphaceae, Hymenochaetaceae, Lachnocladiaceae, Lentariaceae, Lepidostromataceae, Physalacriaceae, Pterulaceae, and Typhulaceae). Among the 22 Brazilian states with occurrence of clavarioid fungi, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Amazonas have the higher number of species, but most of them are represented by a single record, which reinforces the need of more inventories and taxonomic studies about the group. KEY WORDS — diversity, taxonomy, tropical forest Introduction The clavarioid fungi are a polyphyletic group, characterized by coralloid, simple or branched basidiomata, with variable color and consistency. They include 30 genera with about 800 species, distributed in Agaricales, Cantharellales, Gomphales, Hymenochaetales, Polyporales and Russulales (Corner 1970; Petersen 1988; Kirk et al. 2008). These fungi are usually humicolous or lignicolous, but some can be symbionts – ectomycorrhizal, lichens or pathogens, being found in temperate, subtropical and tropical forests (Corner 1950, 1970; Petersen 1988; Nelsen et al. 2007; Henkel et al. 2012). Some species are edible, while some are poisonous (Toledo & Petersen 1989; Henkel et al. 2005, 2011). Studies about clavarioid fungi in Brazil are still scarce (Fidalgo & Fidalgo 1970; Rick 1959; De Lamônica-Freire 1979; Sulzbacher et al. -

MODELIST23.rtf 29/5/15 The BMS Travelling Exhibition of Fungus Models: A Brief History Henry Tribe In 1987 the British Mycological Society arranged a Fungus Modelling Workshop in Pershore, Worcs. given by Dr S.Diamandis from Greece who specialised in latex moulding techniques. One of the participants was Mrs Eileen Chattaway of Charmouth, Dorset and by 1996 she had made some 35 models of fungi. These she kept at her home but she thought that they would be more useful if she loaned the majority of them to the Society for the purposes of a Travelling Exhibition to the general public. As Publicity Secretary of the BMS at the time, arrangements fell to me. The first exhibition was at the Royal Literary and Scientific Institution in Bath. Eileen herself brought her models to Bath, carefully wrapped for transit, but we realized following the exhibition that individual boxes for each model were needed for transit purposes. The President, Steve Moss, agreed that this was necessary and 29 individual boxes were ordered from Dauphin Display Ltd of Oxford. Their Managing Director went to Charmouth to measure the models and found that four standard box sizes sufficed to fit them. Each box was made of acrylic sheet on a medium density fibre (MDF) base and could serve as an exhibition container inside a museum cabinet. The cost was £ 949 plus delivery (£ 94) and included four large hardboard boxes inside which the acrylic boxes fitted. A further charge of £ 88 was made for the visit to Dorset. Total cost = £ 1131. Steve Moss also asked Eileen Chattaway to value the models for insurance purposes and this came to £ 2825. -

MUSHROOMS OF THE OTTAWA NATIONAL FOREST Compiled by Dana L. Richter, School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI for Ottawa National Forest, Ironwood, MI March, 2011 Introduction There are many thousands of fungi in the Ottawa National Forest filling every possible niche imaginable. A remarkable feature of the fungi is that they are ubiquitous! The mushroom is the large spore-producing structure made by certain fungi. Only a relatively small number of all the fungi in the Ottawa forest ecosystem make mushrooms. Some are distinctive and easily identifiable, while others are cryptic and require microscopic and chemical analyses to accurately name. This is a list of some of the most common and obvious mushrooms that can be found in the Ottawa National Forest, including a few that are uncommon or relatively rare. The mushrooms considered here are within the phyla Ascomycetes – the morel and cup fungi, and Basidiomycetes – the toadstool and shelf-like fungi. There are perhaps 2000 to 3000 mushrooms in the Ottawa, and this is simply a guess, since many species have yet to be discovered or named. This number is based on lists of fungi compiled in areas such as the Huron Mountains of northern Michigan (Richter 2008) and in the state of Wisconsin (Parker 2006). The list contains 227 species from several authoritative sources and from the author’s experience teaching, studying and collecting mushrooms in the northern Great Lakes States for the past thirty years. Although comments on edibility of certain species are given, the author neither endorses nor encourages the eating of wild mushrooms except with extreme caution and with the awareness that some mushrooms may cause life-threatening illness or even death. -
