Figuring translations as gifts positions both source and target cultures as givers and recipients and supplements over-used translation metaphors of betrayal, plundering, submission, or fidelity. As Marcel Mauss articulates, the gift itself desires to be returned and reciprocated. My project maps out the Hemispheric Americas as an independent translation zone and highlights non-European translation norms. Portuguese and Spanish have been sidelined even from European translation studies: only in Mexico and Brazil do we see autochthonous translation theories in Spanish and Portuguese. Focusing on translation strategies that value ii taboo-breaking, I identify poet-translators in Mexico and Brazil who develop their own translation manuals. -

Herbert Huntington Smith: um naturalista injustiçado? Josiane Kunzler * Antonio Carlos Sequeira Fernandes # Vera Maria Medina da Fonseca § Samia Jraige $ Resumo : Na segunda metade do século XIX, o naturalista norte-americano Herbert Hun- tington Smith (1851-1919) realizou expedições ao Brasil que resultaram na aquisição de cerca de 250.000 exemplares de história natural. Sua viagem mais importante deu-se, entre- tanto, entre os anos de 1882 a 1886. Contratado pelo Museu Nacional em fins de 1881, percorreu diversos estados brasileiros, finalmente permanecendo na região da Chapada dos Guimarães, onde coletou vários exemplares de répteis, aves, mamíferos e insetos, além de amostras petrográficas e fossilíferas. Por força de contrato, Smith organizou coleções sepa- radas, sendo uma para remessa ao Museu Nacional e, outra, para seu uso particular. Análi- ses dos documentos presentes na instituição revelam em grande parte o cumprimento do contrato pelo naturalista, a exceção da enorme coleção de insetos. Devido à falta de recur- sos ao final do contrato, Smith foi autorizado pelo diretor da época a retornar aos Estados Unidos com toda a coleção de insetos, onde procederia a separação dos exemplares, retor- nando ao museu os exemplares que lhe pertencessem. O não cumprimento dessa promessa resultou em protestos significativos posteriores, qualificando-o como indivíduo de idonei- dade moral duvidosa. A análise da documentação existente permite duvidar dessa qualifica- ção, face à grande contribuição que Smith deu ao acervo da instituição. Counter-Narratives and Social Transformation: Insights from an Experience of Legislative Theatre Inspired by Augusto Boal
Decimoprimera Conferencia Regional de América Latina y El Caribe Sociedad Internacional para la Investigación del Tercer Sector Quito, Ecuador, 18 al 20 de octubre de 2017 Thematic axe 4: Emerging research-action issues in Latin America and the Caribbean Counter-narratives and social transformation: insights from an experience of legislative theatre inspired by Augusto Boal Chantale Mailhot1, Marlei Pozzebon2 and Fabio Prado Saldanha3 Introduction The purpose of this paper is to reflect and discuss about the potential of social transformation of an experience of forum theatre – more particularly the Boal’s legislative theatre form – using a counter-narrative perspective. At the one hand, Augusto Boal – theatre director, dramatist, theorist, writer and teacher – was the founder of the movement “theatre of the oppressed”, a repertory of techniques and tactics that seeks to motivate people, restore true dialogue, and create space for participants to rehearse taking action. The underlying vision is that everyone has the capacity to act in the theatre of their own lives, everybody is at once an actor and a spectator. People are “spect-actors!”. Among the different types of interventions conceived by Boal, one that is prominent is the forum theatre, a short play or scene that dramatizes a situation, with an oppressive ending, to provoke spect-actors to react. In its turn, the legislative theatre is essentially a forum theatre performance, but that leads the audience to further discuss policies or laws that could help bring about some of the solutions the engaged audience - “spect-actors” - had offered during the performance. At the other hand, we have Mise au Jeu, an organization of theatre-intervention. -

The focus are the connections between childhood memories and adult personality, regarding the character Virgínia in the novel The chandelier (O lustre), by Clarice Lispector, in order to exemplify the function of affective memory and the universal right to a dignified childhood. The function of affective memories is an important trace in the process of identity formation, which contributes to the development of a legal theory regarding children’s rights. Affection is considered a foundation for dignified life, and literary legal reflections contribute to the rethinking of childhood, in the eyes of Law and social studies. KEYWORDS: affective memory; Clarice Lispector; right to a dignified childhood. INITIAL THOUGHTS Benedito Nunes (1989, p. 105), as an exponent in analyzing the production by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, indicates the reflexive, uncanny features of the fictional characters created by her, and emphasizes the density of her narrative regarding consciousness. Therefore, I approach the narratives that made him famous: the ones produced by the print press as well as those texts that negotiate meaning, memory, domain and identity created by his fans. I will place special emphasis on the fact that his public produced a definitive narrative about his figure, an account imbued with devotion, familiarity and creativity following his death. More specifically, I identify intertwined relations between the Brazilian audience and the media involved with creating the image of Antonio Carlos Jobim. My hypothesis is that Antonio Carlos Jobim’s image was exhaustively associated with the Brazilian musical movement Bossa Nova for ideological reasons. Specially, during a particular moment in Brazilian history—the Juscelino Kubitschek’s years (1955-1961). -

Hegemonic Masculinity, Women and Football in Brazil and Argentina DAVID WOOD University of Sheffield, UK The practice of football by women in Latin America is an integral part of historical patterns around the performance of gender roles and offers insights into how power, both symbolic and political, is subject to ongoing processes of negotiation. A study of women’s involvement as spectators and players in Brazil and Argentina since the early twentieth century sees football emerge as a field in which the construction of gender identities, both personal and national, may be contested. More recently, a growing presence of female players, writers and academics suggests that female agency through football in Latin America is an increasingly realistic goal. Taking the Field Football in Latin America has become firmly established as a subject of study for historians, sociologists, anthropologists and literary scholars, especially in relation to Argentina and Brazil, but the great majority of publications arising from such work focus entirely on the game as played by men. Indeed, some influential authors have depicted football in the region as an entirely male affair: Argentinian anthropologist Eduardo Archetti, for example, wrote in 1994 that football was and still is a typical and exclusively masculine sport in Argentina (Archetti, 1994: 226), reiterating almost a decade later that the world of football is exclusively male, an encounter in the stadium [ … ] between competing groups of male players and supporters (Archetti, 2003: 220). -

Uma outra definição possível seria a partir do tema tratado nas peças. Levando em conta a sobreposição dessas várias definições é que iremos problematizar as visões que têm como referência o que é teatro negro no Brasil. Neste artigo, buscamos revelar ao grande público a existência, dos anos 1940 até hoje, de numerosos grupos de teatro negro no Brasil. Através de um trabalho etnográfico nas cidades de São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro e Salvador, resgatamos as diferentes experiências desse ato ar- tístico-militante. -
