Chapter 1: National Allegories As Narratives of National Domestication THE RETURN OF THE VANISHING FORMOSAN: DISTURBING THE DISCOURSE OF NATIONAL DOMESTICATION AS THE LITERARY FATE OF THE ABORIGINAL MAIDEN IN POSTWAR TAIWANESE FILM AND FICTION by Darryl Cameron Sterk A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Darryl Cameron Sterk (2009) Abstract The Return of the Vanishing Formosan: Disturbing the Discourse of National Domestication as the Literary Fate of the Aboriginal Maiden in Postwar Taiwanese Film and Fiction Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Darryl Cameron Sterk East Asian Studies University of Toronto Stories about aborigines in a settler society, especially stories about aboriginal maidens and settler men, tend to become national allegories. Initially, the aboriginal maiden is a figure for colonial landscapes and resources, while later, in her conversion in fact or fiction from aboriginal to settler, she helps build national identity. Yet after being romanced, the aboriginal maiden‘s fate is to disappear from settler consciousness, because she is displaced by the national settler mother or because the settler loses interest in her, only to return in abjection to haunt the settler conscience. In her return as a prostitute, a commodified bride or a ghost, she disturbs the discourse of ‗national domestication‘, the notion of nation as family. Though she returns in abjection, an Amazonian association tends to linger in the person of the aboriginal maiden, an association that suggests the kind of self-empowerment on which a healthy liberal society ii depends. In other words, the figure of the aboriginal maiden tends to be used in the construction, the contestation, and potentially the reconstruction of national identity in a settler society. While I discuss examples from settler societies around the world, particularly the story of Pocahontas, and try to contribute to ‗settler colonial discourse studies‘, I focus on postwar Taiwan. This dissertation proposes the notions of the ‗settler society‘ and the Habermasian public sphere as ‗frames‘ for the study of Taiwanese literature. I show how the Formosan aboriginal maiden has been appropriated for the construction and critique of both Chinese and Taiwanese nationalisms. I argue that while nationalism is partly about social control and the advancement of particular interests, writers who have romanced the Formosan aborigine have been implicitly participating in a debate about national domestication, the telos of which is the democratic imagination of a good society, one in which the Formosan aborigines will feel in some sense ‗at home‘, though perhaps not as members of the ‗national family‘. Finally, under the rubric of ‗alternative aboriginal modernities‘, I discuss stories that reread the romance of the Formosan aborigine by aboriginal writers who have entered the national debate. iii Acknowledgements As I finish a dissertation on allegory, I am particularly aware of my own interpersonal relationality; no man is a monad. I‘ve learned a great deal about scholarship by trying to follow Prof. Hsiau‘s example. A comment Prof. Sun Dachuan made at a conference provided one of the inspirations for the theoretical orientation, and I‘m grateful to him for sitting down with me to discuss his own aboriginal research. Prof. Huang Mei-e directed me to a fascinating early novel, and Profs. Hsu and Liao let me sit in on their classes at the Institute of Taiwanese Literature and Culture (NTNU). Prof. Hu Wanchuan graciously invited me to his home in Taizhong for an afternoon of good conversation about traditional Chinese fiction and Taiwanese folklore with his graduate student, now Prof. Cheng Mei-hui. The professors at the Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation at National Taiwan Normal University and the people at The Chinese PEN helped me hone my language and translation skills, rounding me out as a literary scholar. At conferences and talks at which I‘ve presented my work, I‘ve profited from the astute comments of such scholars as Terence Russell, Scott Simon, Frank Muyard, Tu Kuo-ching, Stuart Thompson, Paul-François Tremlett, Gregory Blue, Howard Goldblatt, Jeffrey Kinkley, and Liao Ping-hui. My research at the University of Toronto was funded by the UTF fellowship and, during the two years I spent in Taiwan studying translation, the Ministry of Education (ROC). In my final year, during which I wrote it all up, Profs. Shen and Liu made life-saving financial arrangements for me, without which I could never have finished. They have also given me my first substantial teaching experience, valuable more for what I am learning than for the remuneration. Without the support of a number of people, the whole process would have been intolerably solitary. The information shared by these imperial dragon robes are discussed through a cultural and technological analysis of the symbolic motifs and fabric structures of these garments to reveal the cultural and social impact of yin-yang on Qing imperial costume design. Keywords: Dragon robe, Yin and Yang, imperial/court costume Introduction Since the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), the yin-yang philosophy has been utilized in Chinese court dress (Lin, 2015). The influence of yin-yang on Chinese costume design can be observed in the surviving artifacts of the Qing dynasty (Cheng, 2008; Camman, 1952). The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) Costume Collection (UHMCC) houses three kosse robes (i.e., tapestry) and one embroidery dragon robes from the Qing dynasty which provide representations of the yin-yang philosophy through the motifs and color patterns of its design. These important robes were selected to exhibit during special days such as year of dragon, UHM 100 years, and UHMCC 50 year’s anniversary. There are four categories of court dress: gunfu, chaofu, jifu, changfu (Zhoa, 1989; Zhou & Gao, 1988). Three dragon robes from the UHM Costume Collection are classified as jifu, or semi-formal court robe (Vollmer, 1977a).

    Gender and the family in contemporary Chinese-language film remakes Sarah Woodland BBusMan., BA (Hons) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of Languages and Cultures 1 Abstract This thesis argues that cinematic remakes in the Chinese cultural context are a far more complex phenomenon than adaptive translation between disparate cultures. While early work conducted on French cinema and recent work on Chinese-language remakes by scholars including Li, Chan and Wang focused primarily on issues of intercultural difference, this thesis looks not only at remaking across cultures, but also at intracultural remakes. In doing so, it moves beyond questions of cultural politics, taking full advantage of the unique opportunity provided by remakes to compare and contrast two versions of the same narrative, and investigates more broadly at the many reasons why changes between a source film and remake might occur. Using gender as a lens through which these changes can be observed, this thesis conducts a comparative analysis of two pairs of intercultural and two pairs of intracultural films, each chapter highlighting a different dimension of remakes, and illustrating how changes in gender representations can be reflective not just of differences in attitudes towards gender across cultures, but also of broader concerns relating to culture, genre, auteurism, politics and temporality. The thesis endeavours to investigate the complexities of remaking processes in a Chinese-language cinematic context, with a view to exploring the ways in which remakes might reflect different perspectives on Chinese society more broadly, through their ability to compel the viewer to reflect not only on the past, by virtue of the relationship with a source text, but also on the present, through the way in which the remake reshapes this text to address its audience.

This archetypal bogeyman has been accused of preventing females from maximising their potentials in many societies of the world today. This paper examines the patriarchal structures in Nigerian and Taiwanese novels which manifestly disempower women, and interrogates the complicity of matriarchy in the debilitation of the female characters in the texts. The thesis of the paper is that the more empowered the female is, the better the society, and this cannot be achieved through the demonization of men but through the collaboration of both sexes.     HISTORY OF FAIRFAX CITY The City of Fairfax began as the Town of Providence in 1805, a community built around the Fairfax County Courthouse. Completed in 1800 at the corner of Little River Turnpike and Ox Road, the area was a crossroads of conflict during the American Civil War with hardships and disrupted lives for everyone. From a crossroads of conflict, the area became a crossroads of commerce in the late nineteenth century when the dairy industry propelled economic rebirth and the building of schools, churches, homes, barns, and businesses and in 1874 the Town of Providence officially became the Town of Fairfax. The early 20th century ushered in a myriad of technological and transportation changes and the emergence of civic organizations, sports clubs, a Town police unit, and a volunteer fire company. World War II spurred rapid growth across the region in housing, business ventures, and population and Fairfax quickly changed from a rural to a suburban community. The Town of Fairfax deeded a 150-acre tract of land in 1959 to the University of Virginia to establish a permanent home for what is now George Mason University. In 1961, the Town of Fairfax was incorporated as the independent City of Fairfax and in 1962 a new City Hall was completed. Rich in history and heritage, residents and visitors enjoy a small-town atmosphere and an abundance of cultural and recreational pursuits in the midst of a bustling metropolitan area. As the City's first mayor, John C. Wood said in 1962 - "Fairfax has a wonderful past and present and an even greater future." HOW DID THE JULY 4TH CELEBRATION BEGIN IN FAIRFAX CITY? In recent years, literature’s capacity to generate in its readers “a rigorous scrutiny of everything they believe in and live by” 2—what Stanley Fish calls its “dialectical” potential—has drawn the attention of a number of liberal-democratic theorists, most notably Martha Nussbaum and Rich- ard Rorty. By “liberal-democratic” is meant here, of course, that system of government with popular rule, regular elections, a commitment to individual rights and the rule of law; one that draws on a tradition of political thought that includes the work of John Locke, John Stuart Mill and John Rawls. Although their exact formulations of the claim differ in important ways, Nussbaum and Rorty are united in the belief that reading can enhance the practice of liberal-democracy by expanding the moral imaginations of a citizenry. Such an expansion will, they believe, promote the values of tolerance, respect for other viewpoints, and a recognition of the contingency of one’s own perspective, in short, the values of civil society. Whilst there is undoubtedly something intuitively appealing about their claim, there is much that is philosophically and politically problematic about their respective formulations of it.

Introduction 1. According to the Feasibility Study Report and RF, the Project involves neither land acquisition nor house demolition, and involves temporary land occupation only. The project area involves a number of ethnic minorities, including Yi, Hani and Lisu. B. Socioeconomic profile of ethnic minorities 2. Poverty and income: The Project involves 16 cities/prefectures in Yunnan Province. In 2013, there were 6.61 million poor population in Yunnan Province, which accounting for 17.54% of total population. In 2013, the per capita net income of rural residents in Yunnan Province was 6,141 yuan. 3. Gender Heads of households are usually men, reflecting the superior status of men. Both men and women do farm work, where men usually do more physically demanding farm work, such as fertilization, cultivation, pesticide application, watering, harvesting and transport, while women usually do housework or less physically demanding farm work, such as washing clothes, cooking, taking care of old people and children, feeding livestock, and field management. In Lijiang and Dali, Bai and Naxi women also do physically demanding labor, which is related to ethnic customs. Means of production are usually purchased by men, while daily necessities usually by women.
