∗I take the opportunity to thank the following institutions and individuals for their assistance in the compilation of this list: Camilla Adang; Dominique Akhoun- Schwarb; Yohanan Friedmann; Katharina A. Ivanyi; Arthur Kiron, Schottenstein- Jesselson Curator of Judaica Collections and Librarian of the Herbert D. Katz Cen- ter for Advanced Judaic Studies Library (Philadelphia, PA); Lukas M¨uhlethaler; Joel Perlmann; Gregor Schwarb; Sarah Shoemaker, Special Collections Librarian, Robert D. Farber University Archives & Special Collections at Brandeis University (Waltham, MA); Susan Woodland, Director of the Hadassah Archives at the Amer- ican Jewish Historical Society (New York, NY); and the directors and staff at the Firestone Library at Princeton University (Princeton, NJ), the Lavon Institute (Tel Aviv) and the Widener Library at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA). According to the entry devoted to Moshe Perlmann in the Encyclopaedia Judaica (Jerusalem 1971, vol. 13, column 297, signed by the editor [ed.]), Perlmann published a two vol- ume publication containing Talmudic statements on medicine (Midrash ha-refu’ah: kolel kol torat ha-refu’ah u-shemirat ha-beri’ut ba-Talmud ha-Bavli vi-Yerushalmi, Mekhilta, Sifra, Sifre ve-Tosefta, Midrashim ve-Zohar, ve-khu’ 1llek d`etxd yxcn ,`ztqeze ixtq ,`xtq ,`zlikn ,inlyexie ilaa cenlza ze`ixad zxinye d`etxd zxez lk 'eke xdefe miyxcn . 2 vols. Tel Aviv: Hotsaat Dvir, 686–694 [1926–34] [repr. 5719/1959]). This information is repeated in an enlarged, unsigned entry on “Perl- mann, Moshe” in Encyclopaedia Judaica. Second Edition, London etc. 2007, vol. 15, p. 779. Perlmann’s authorship is most uncertain. No such work is listed in any of his extant CVs. Moreover, his son, Joel Perlmann, is also not aware of such a publication from his father’s pen and holds it to be most unlikely, given his scant interest in medicine. 1M. Perlmann is mentioned as the “responsible” (ha-akhra’i) for the issue on the title page. There are no signed contributions by him in this issue.

2Joel Perlmann kindly made a photocopy of this essay available to me. He informs me that his father submitted the essay under this name (written communication, 24 September 2008) and explains this in his unpublished “Moshe Perlmann: Remarks at his funeral, September 10, 2001”, that he kindly made available to me, as follows: “[H]is relative indifference to matters of prestige was related to a general unwillingness to thrust himself forward, to eschewing self-promotion. Often this quality was almost pathological in him, and related as well to an overall depressive cast of mind, a sense that all is vanity, and that human beings generally seem best at destruction of what is good. When he was an undergraduate at the Hebrew University he submitted an essay for a prize in demography (which he in fact won); he entered under the pseudonym, Mem Shithi (Mr. Superficial).” :::: 3M. Perlmann is mentioned as the “responsible” (ha-akhra’i) for the issue on p. 31, with the following postal address given: Tel Aviv, Rehov Ha-Yarkon 72. The topic of the MA thesis is mentioned in an official letter by the secretary for student affairs of the Hebrew University to Moshe Perlmann, dated January 26, 1934 [preserved among his official student records (student no. 451) in the archives of the Hebrew University] and by Perlmann in an undated letter to Harry A. Stuttgart: Franz Steiner Verlag, 1994. The Guide also has an “Introduction” (pp. 1–13, by The Editors) providing details on the genesis of the translation and the role of the various participants (pp. 11–13): “The translation project itself has its own history. It was initiated in 1978 when M. Perlmann, UCLA, obtained an [sic] translation grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) for a complete translation of al-Jabart¯ı’s History of Egypt. Because of the enormous size of the task a number of scholars were asked to take over parts of the translation. The following distribution evolved (giving the pagination of the B¯ul¯aq edition) . . . vol. III, 115–357 were translated by M. Perlmann, UCLA. . . . The translations rested in various stages of progress for a number of years until preparatory work for publication was resumed when T. Philipp received a generous grant from the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung for this purpose in 1990. The individual translators had been left at great liberty as to how to proceed with their translations. Hence, the first task was it [sic] to standardize and integrate the different translations as much as possible with regard to transliterations, translations of specific terms, pagination etc. . . . This translation project seems to have grown as we worked on it. The actual size of the task was probably underestimated by all. The sheer amount of material was staggering.”
