March 2010 ______Jim Meyer Editor Jmeyer7745@Aol.Com ______ Serrapost March 2010 ______________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________Jim Meyer Editor [email protected] ____________________________ Successful Night The 2010 Ordinandi Dinner was the largest yet. From 25 guests 20 years ago to 1,760 Tuesday March 9 attests to the popularity and support given by the laity of the Archdiocese and beyond. Following the blessing by His Excellency Archbishop Thomas Collins, guests enjoyed a meal of Penne Rigate, pan seared chicken and a medley of garden vegetables followed by dessert pastries. The Class of 2010 from St. Augustine’s Seminary and Redemptoris Mater Seminary, eleven in number, each told his vocation story. Rev. Mr. Luis Calleja Jr. 31, born in Toronto, discerned at Serra House and entered St. Augustine’s in 2005. Three uncles and three cousins from both sides of his family are priests. Rev. Mr. Kim D’Sousa, 27 was born in Nigeria. He was greatly influenced by an Irish missionary. While studying for an engineering degree he was gradually drawn to the diocesan priesthood by the example of the university chaplain. World Youth Day in Toronto also played a part in his decision. Rev. Mr. Silvio Ejuga, 41, was born in Croatia. During his youth he lived a life separated from God and church. The war raging in Croatia in the 1960’s caused him to rethink his life. He joined Neocatechumenal Way in his city, became a missionary in neighbouring countries and finally entered the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Toronto. Rev. Mr. Landorf Jose Garcia Mariona, 34, of El Salvador immigrated to Canada, with his family in 1987. After being a part of a Neocatechumenal Community and a vocational meeting at WYD in Paris and a meeting with John Paul ll in the Holy Land, God helped him affirm his call. He entered the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Toronto and will serve the Archdiocese of Toronto. Rev. Mr. Jeffery Oehring, 25, was born and raised in Walkerton, Ontario. During his high school years he began to take his prayer life seriously. Following his OAC year in 2003, he entered St. Phillip’s Seminary for philosophy and in 2005 made the transition to St. Augustine’s. Deacon Jeff will serve the Diocese of Hamilton. Rev. Mr. Bartiomiej Palczwski, 32, was born and raised in Poland. He graduated from university with an electrical engineering degree and worked as a computer programmer. He first realized his call in grade seven . His discernment process also came from the Neocatechumenal Way and the Pope’s messages during various WYDs. He joined the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Toronto in 2001. Rev. Mr. Christopher Sherren, 25, was born in and lived in Charlottetown, P.E.I. He came to St. Augustine’s Seminary in 2003. Although he grew up in a culturally Catholic family, he spent most of his high school years associated with the Baptist congregation. After a few more years of study and discernment it became clear that he should remain Catholic and the call was a call to the priesthood. He will serve his home diocese. Rev. Mr. Jerry Traveres, 28 was born in Toronto of Portuguese immigrant parents and raised in Hamilton. He attended Trent University in Peterborough studying history, french and political science in the hope of becoming a high school teacher, getting married and raising a family. While he felt the Lord’s call, he pressed the “mute” button for several years. Finally after involvement in parish and discernment, Jerry entered St. Augustine’s Seminary in 2004. He will serve Peterborough Diocese. Rev. Mr. Henery Smolenaars, 40, was born and raised in Nova Scotia on a dairy farm. He became an industrial electrician. He had thought of the priesthood as a teen and ultimately realized that being a priest would fulfill him. He studied one year at Christ the King Seminary in Mission B.C., two years at the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Toronto and then entered St. Augustines. He will serve in the Diocese of Yarmouth and Halifax. Fr. Mounir El-Rassi, 43, was born in Lebanon and arrived in Canada in1990 with his two brothers. Three years later his parents three more brothers and a sister arrived. His work provided freedom and financial rewards but left him feeling empty. More and more he turned to prayer and scripture until finally, he entered St. Augustine’s Seminary, “the best days of my life.” He was ordained in St. Michael’s Cathedral on August 15, 2009. Rev. Mr. Stephen Crowley, 57, had a most interesting journey. He was born and raised in Peterborough, attended Trent University and St. Lawrence College in Kingston where he received a degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. In1976 he married Maureen O’Gorman. After the birth of their first child she contracted multiple sclerosis. In June, 2006, Stephen was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of Hamilton. They had two more children, who called him Deacon Dad. In 2008 Maureen died and Stephen retired from the medical field and returned to St. Augustine’s Seminary for priestly formation. He told his adult children they could soon go back to calling him “Father”. Gifts to Ordinandi: A Pastoral Sick Call Kit, gift certificates from Broughton’s Church Supply and Di Carlo Religious Supply Centre, $150.00 honarium from the Dinner Committee, 500 Prayer Cards bearing Group picture of Ordinandi, 7 dozen olivewood rosaries made in Bethlehem and a special olivewood “Jesus” cross. • MALAYSIA Executive Summary The
MALAYSIA Executive Summary The constitution protects freedom of religion; however, portions of the constitution as well as other laws and policies placed some restrictions on religious freedom. The government did not demonstrate a trend toward either improvement or deterioration in respect for and protection of the right to religious freedom. The constitution gives the federal and state governments the power to “control or restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam.” The constitution also defines ethnic Malays as Muslim. Muslims may not legally convert to another religion except in extremely rare circumstances, although members of other religions may convert to Islam. Officials at the federal and state government levels oversee Islamic religious activities, and sometimes influence the content of sermons, use mosques to convey political messages, and prevent certain imams from speaking at mosques. The approved form of Islam is Sunni Islam; other teachings and forms of Islam are illegal. The government maintains a dual legal system, whereby Sharia courts rule on religious, family, and some criminal issues involving Muslims and secular courts rule on other issues pertaining to both Muslims and the broader population. Government policies promoted Islam above other religions. Minority religious groups remained generally free to practice their beliefs; however, over the past several years, many have expressed concern that the secular civil and criminal court system has gradually ceded jurisdictional control to Sharia courts, particularly in areas of family law involving disputes between Muslims and non- Muslims. Religious minorities continued to face limitations on religious expression, including restrictions on the purchase and use of real property.

ASIATIC, VOLUME 13, NUMBER 2, DECEMBER 2019 Dialogical Intersections of Tamil and Chinese Ethnic Identity in the Catholic Church of Peninsular Malaysia Shanthini Pillai,1 National University of Malaysia (UKM) Pauline Pooi Yin Leong,2 Sunway University Malaysia Melissa Shamini Perry,3 National University of Malaysia (UKM) Angeline Wong Wei Wei,4 Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysia Abstract The contemporary Malaysian Catholic church bears witness to the many bridges that connect ecclesial and ethnic spaces, as liturgical practices and cultural materiality of the Malaysian Catholic community often reflect the dialogic interactions between ethnic diversity and the core of traditional Roman Catholic practices. This essay presents key ethnographic data gathered from fieldwork conducted at selected churches in peninsular Malaysia as part of a research project that aimed to investigate transcultural adaptation in the intersections between Roman Catholic culture and ethnic Chinese and Tamil cultural elements. The discussion presents details of data gathered from churches that were part of the sample and especially reveal how ceremonial practices and material culture in many of these Malaysian Catholic churches revealed a high level of adaptation of ethnic identity and that these in turn are indicative of dialogue and mutual exchange between the repertoire of ethnic cultural customs and Roman Catholic religious practices. Keywords Malaysian Catholic Church, transcultural adaptation, heteroglossic Catholicism, dialogism, ethnic diversity, diaspora 1 Shanthini Pillai (Ph.D.) is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, National University of Malaysia (UKM). She held Research Fellowships at the University of Queensland, Australia and the Asia Research Institute, Singapore, and has published widely in the areas of her expertise.

  • CLS Commentary: Update on the Al Islam Issue
CLS Commentary: Update on the Al Islam Issue Kuala Lumpur, May 11, 2011 -- In 2009, Al Islam, a local magazine published an article where it claimed that two journalists entered a church on a Sunday to find if they were carrying out conversion of Muslims in the Church. They discovered there was none. They nevertheless proceeded to attend Mass (celebrated in Bahasa Malaysia) and received Holy Communion. They then spat the Holy Eucharist out and photographed the sacred specie. They proceeded to publish their act and conduct in the magazine. No action was taken by the authorities against the journalists or the magazine editor despite the lodgment of a police report. The CLS requested for a meeting with the Home Minister. Such a meeting was scheduled on 27 August 2009. CLS was represented by Fr. O.C. Lim (Spiritual Advisor), Mabel Sabastian (President), Joy Appukuttan (Vice President) and Francis Pereira (Past President). The Home Minister was represented through his Deputy (1) Datuk Abu Seman Yusof, Datuk Markiman and Datuk Michael Chong. CLS presented a Memorandum to the Deputy Minister and requested for action to be taken against the journalists, the editor and the publishers of the Magazine so as to deter future acts and misdeeds by others. No action was taken until in early 2010, the police informed that the case was classified as ‘NFA’ (No further action). The Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Murphy Pakiam called for a Press Conference on 4th March 2010 and criticized the Attorney General for not taking action (http://www.shermankuek.net/2010/03/catholic_church_demands_apolog.php).

  • Issue 27 Page | 1 GABRIELITE ACTIVITIES in SINGPORE by Bro
BROTHERS OF ST GABRIEL “Through Work Achieves Success” My soul glorifies the Lord; My spirit rejoices in God my saviour. Words from the Provincial Superior Bro. Francis Chua Dear Brothers & Friends of Montfort In this modern world, we are constantly being challenged as we keep our faith in Jesus and be true to His Name. How then can we be true to His Name especially in this educative mission as Montfortian? Only this, when Jesus prayed to His Heavenly Father “Consecrate them in the truth”. By doing so, He said “the world will hate you when you are being consecrated and ready to speak the truth.” However, Jesus reassured us that He is living in us through our suffering. Recently on 1st of May 2014, Brother Joseph Philip had boldly taken this step to consecrate his life to God to serve without condition in order to make a difference in the lives of those who need him. Brother Joseph Philip made his Perpetual Profession at St. Patrick Church, Membakut, Sabah. I take this opportunity to congratulate Brother Joseph Philip for his perseverance and would like to thank Bishop Cornelius Piong, the Brothers, the Clergy and Parishioners of St. Patrick Church Membakut for making this day possible and memorable for all of us. St Louis Marie De Montfort's famous quote “No Cross, What a Cross” is basically reminding us of our daily challenge that we need to face them positively. St Paul in the Acts of the Apostles also reminded us that fierce wolves will invade us and have no mercy on the flock when he is gone.

  • Islamist Conservatism and the Demise of Islam Hadhari in Malaysia Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamida* and Muhamad Takiyuddin Ismailb
Islam and Christian–Muslim Relations, 2014 Vol. 25, No. 2, 159–180, http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09596410.2014.880549 Islamist Conservatism and the Demise of Islam Hadhari in Malaysia Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamida* and Muhamad Takiyuddin Ismailb aSchool of Distance Education, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, Malaysia; bCentre of History, Politics and Strategy, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Selangor, Malaysia This article argues that Islam Hadhari, as a model for development officially inaugurated during the administration of Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (2003–9), encountered failure. Its lack of success was significantly due to the rise of Islamist conservatives, who deliberately interpreted Islam Hadhari as a political instrument to impose Islamization from above in a manner not conducive to living in a spirit of peaceful coexistence in a multi-ethnic society. While on the one hand it promoted an Islam that cherishes the values of inclusivity, moderation and inter-religious tolerance, on the other hand Islam Hadhari unfortunately triggered defensive responses from Islamist conservatives. This ad hoc conservative alliance comprised religious leaders associated with the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), state religious functionaries, scholars affiliated to the opposition Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS: Parti Islam SeMalaysia) and Islamist non- governmental organizations. The rise of this Islamist conservatism aggravated ethno- religious relations during Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s premiership, leading to the setbacks experienced by his government in the general elections of 2008. By then, the death knell had been sounded for Islam Hadhari. It was steadily consigned to the graveyard of history by the administration of Najib Razak, who took over from Abdullah in April 2009.
