Introducing that first number, Father General John Baptist Janssens underlined its role as an instrument “to encourage that mutual understanding urged so insistently in the Constitutions” of the Society of Jesus, and to hold “the spirit of universality, which is so eminently catholic.” He added: “We offer this Yearbook not only to the members of the Society, but also to all its friends, especially to our families who have given us their sons and a part of their heart; to our benefactors, without whom some of the works described here, and many others as well, would not even exist; to our past pupils and those who make the Spiritual Exercises, to our faithful collaborators in the colleges and in other organizations. The support of their united sympathy as well as their effective help in many different ways are a continual encouragement and often the very condition of our apostolate”. I am convinced that the goals described above are as valid as ever. We devote the first part of this Yearbook to the past fifty years. Some of the articles published in previous years have been reprinted, each flanked by a new article describing the same topic seen with today’s eyes. Thus, the same apostolic work is viewed as it once was and as it is today. Among the apostolates featured in this way are the astronomical observatory of Castelgandolfo, the theme of ecology, the service of aboriginal people in Australia, and the presence of the Jesuits in two countries that have experienced great changes in the last decades, Nepal and Haiti. Another part of the Yearbook presents some important celebrations. Every year there are many centenaries or anniversaries of different kinds: of eminent Jesuits or of works or houses of the Society in many parts of the world. It would be impossible to remember them all, but we wanted to highlight some of those which seemed to us to be of particular importance, both for our Jesuit history and for the apostolic influence which these persons and works had and still have in the world. The echoes of the recent 35th General Congregation are frequent in a number of articles, but two are particularly emphasized: first, the theme of “new frontiers... that we must be willing to embrace” (Decr. 2, n. 24), and second, the theme of “new causes of poverty and exclusion [which] are not lacking in a world marked by grave economic and environmental imbalances, by processes of globalization caused by selfishness rather than by solidarity, and by devastating and absurd armed conflicts” (Benedict XVI, Address to the 35th General Congregation). Two parts of this Yearbook seek to underline these areas of renewed apostolic commitment on the part of the Society of Jesus, offering some concrete examples of what individual Jesuits or entire Provinces are undertaking in these fields. These are only some of the highlights of the rich and varied content that you will find as you read through the following pages. I hope that this Yearbook will help to promote that spirit of universality mentioned by Father Janssens fifty years ago. I would like to invite all of you to reflect on the contribution which you yourselves have made to the stories you are reading. As we Jesuits become more and more aware of the importance and the blessings of collaboration with others, we realize that it is this collaboration that allows us to continue dreaming and planning for a creative future. Thank you for working with us. I take this opportunity to wish you a peaceful 2010, full of peace and joy in the Lord. Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, S.J. Superior General of the Society of Jesus 6 50 Fiftieth Anniversary Remembrance 50 years ago the first Yearbook of the Society of Jesus appeared in response to the desire of Superior General John Baptist Janssens. In remembrance of that event we have reprinted a few of.

  • Ignatius, Prayer and the Spiritual Exercises
IGNATIUS, PRAYER AND THE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES Harvey D. Egan ECAUSE OF HIS EXTRAORDINARY apostolic success, and later that of B the order he founded, Ignatius’ reputation as one of the greatest mystics in the Christian tradition still remains somewhat obscured. When, years ago, I told a friend from a contemplative order that I was writing a book centred on Ignatius’ mysticism, he all but denied that Ignatius had a mystical side.1 Ignatius’ life, however, was profoundly affected by four foundational mystical events: his conversion experience while recovering at Loyola from the Pamplona battlefield injury; an experience of the Virgin Mary during that same recuperation which confirmed his desire to live a chaste life henceforth; the subsequent enlightenment at the River Cardoner; and his vision at La Storta leading him to a mysticism of service.2 In addition, God blessed him with numerous extraordinary secondary mystical phenomena. And one of the purest examples of the direct reporting of mystical experiences in Christian history can be found in Ignatius’ short Spiritual Diary. This extraordinary document contains irrefutable evidence of Ignatius’ deeply trinitarian, Christ-centred, Marian reverential love, and of the priestly, eucharistic and apostolic aspects of his mysticism. Also permeating it is a profoundly mystical emphasis on discernment, visions, intellectual and affective mystical events, somatic phenomena, mystical tears and mysterious loquela—a phenomenon consisting of different levels of inner words saturated with meaning, tones, rhythm and music. Bernard of Clairvaux, John of the Cross and others in the Christian tradition emphasized mystical bridal sleep—that is, swooning lovingly in God’s embrace at the centre of the soul—as the most valuable way of serving God, the Church and one’s neighbour.

  • Enrico Impalà When Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini Passed Away in 2012
Book Reviews 365 Enrico Impalà Vita del Cardinal Martini. Il Bosco e il Mendicante. Rome: San Paolo Edizioni, 2014. Pp. 261. Pb, 15.00 Euros. When Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini passed away in 2012, a storm of (mostly Italian) newspaper articles appeared in honor of the archbishop, who had been both a scholar and a socially-conscious man of God. In him, it seemed that the Ambrosian tradition had found a great exponent, in the tradition of Carlo Borromeo in the sixteenth century. Unfortunately, the discussion in the media focused on only two aspects of Martini’s wide interests: namely, the dialogue between faith and atheism, and his societal involvement. Above all, this was due to his prolific journalistic activity, as a columnist for a national newspaper in Italy. With few exceptions, Martini’s portrait, as rendered by these journalists, hardly resembled a Jesuit. Furthermore, the political categories so often used to describe his position with the college of cardinals impeded a nuanced understanding of his spiritual path. Enrico Impalà’s Il Bosco e il Mendicante [The Woods and the Beggar] aims to fill this gap. Among the many biographies that appeared after the cardinal’s death, this well-written, anecdotal account deserves special attention, because its author was one of Martini’s colleagues during his tenure in Milan. The book’s curious title echoes a Hindu proverb that Martini was fond of quoting during his last years of pastoral work in Milan, to the effect that life has four stages: the first, when one learns from others; the second, when one teaches others; the third, when the time comes to enter the woods and meditate; and the last, when one becomes a beggar, since one requires help from everyone, for everything.

CCHA Report, 2 (1934-1935), 12-21 THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS BY THE REV. F. H. BRADLEY, P H. D. In the year 1534 Henry VIII proclaimed his Act of Supremacy, declaring himself sole head of the Church in England, and thereby laid the cornerstone of the schism that was to develop into a heresy and separate England from the Church of Christ. The same year John Calvin began his career as a heretic and started the movement that worked such havoc in France, in England, and in Scotland. Seventeen years earlier, Luther had hurled defiance at the Pope and begun the breaking up of Christian unity. While all of these agents were working to destroy Christ's work and to dismember His kingdom, Divine Providence was preparing a band of workers to undo the evil that had been done, to strengthen the fortresses of the Old World, and to establish outposts in pagan lands where vast numbers of new members of the great Christian family should replace those who had fallen away or who had been separated from the Church by the disrupting forces of the Reformation. Ignatius Loyola and his little band of religious pronounced their first vows on the Feast of the Assumption of our Blessed Lady, August 15th, 1534. This group of zealous men of God did not have any intention, at the outset, of being special counter-reformers, but it was God's will that they should be one of the most powerful factors in undoing the work of Luther and his followers on the continent of Europe, and in swelling the ranks of Christ's army with fresh recruits from the four corners of the earth.

Organizations, People and Strategies in Astronomy 2 (OPSA 2), 217-230 Ed. A. Heck, © 2013 Venngeist. THE SPECOLA VATICANA: ASTRONOMY AT THE VATICAN GUY CONSOLMAGNO AND CHRISTOPHER CORBALLY Specola Vaticana V-00120, Vatican City State [email protected] [email protected] Abstract. The Vatican is an independent nation, with its own national astronomical observatory, the Specola Vaticana (Vatican Observatory). As- tronomy has been supported at the Vatican since the 1582 reform of the calendar; the present-day Observatory has been in operation since 1891. The work of the observatory is divided between two sites, one in the pa- pal summer gardens south of Rome, Italy, and the other affiliated with the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona, USA. Research undertaken by current staff members ranges from cosmol- ogy and the study of galactic evolution to meteoritics and meteors. Given the stable funding provided by the Vatican, the Observatory has specialized in long-term mapping and cataloguing projects that would be difficult to mount under a traditional three-year funding cycle. These have included participation in the Carte du Ciel photographic map of the sky; the at- lases of spectra produced by its Spectrochemical Laboratory; surveys of star clusters and peculiar stars; and the cataloguing of meteorite physical properties. 1. Astronomy in the Holy See Before 1891 To the Christian church, the study of creation has long been supported as an act of worshipping the Creator. Astronomy was one of the seven subjects that made up the curriculum of the medieval universities, which were themselves founded by the Church.
