Nicholson Library Linfield College 900 SE Baker Street McMinnville, OR 97128 Reference Number: 503-883-2734 Reference Email: [email protected] Language: English Biographical Note: Cole Danehower was a prominent wine writer who focused on the industries of the Pacific Northwest. He began his wine-writing career shortly after moving to Oregon. From there, he expanded his knowledge and involvement in the industry, leaving his personalized mark. Before relocating to Oregon, Danehower resided in California where he worked in the marketing departments of various technology companies. He was enchanted with wine — though not California wine —and made the decision to move to Oregon to start anew. It was during his early time in Oregon that he met his wife, Andrea. Cole Danehower started the Oregon Wine Report in 1999. Along with the OWR, he also became the co-owner of Northwest Palate and continued to write for newspapers such as the Oregonian. While writing about the many facets of the wine industry was his main job, Danehower also participated in wine tastings and acted as a judge in several competitions. In 2003, Danehower was awarded the Appreciation Award from the Oregon Wine Advisory Board, and he received the James Beard Foundation Journalism Award for Most Outstanding Food and Wine Newsletter in North America in 2004. Cole’s legacy includes: his Essential Wines and Wineries of the Pacific Northwest, a book focused on the wine regions of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia; “Pour the Passion,” a consulting business focused on wine communications and marketing; and the Cole Danehower Memorial Scholarship, aimed at helping students looking to study or have a focus in wine at Oregon colleges. Content Description: This collection contains a variety of materials from Cole Danehower’s professional life. Such items include his own publications and articles on the wine industries of the Pacific Northwest, recorded interviews on audiotape, photographs from site visits, and materials pertaining to Cole’s life in California.
