Following the life of the first community of hermits on Mount Carmel and the primitive Carmelite Rule written for them by St. Albert of Jerusalem in the early 1200s, this community is restoring the observance of those ancient religious, who “in imitation of that holy anchorite the prophet , led solitary lives” (Jacques de Vitry, Bishop of Acre, History of Jerusalem) for the glory of God and the salvation of souls. The community is establishing a foundation in Fairfield, Pennsylvania where they will help to provide the Traditional and the priestly and sacramental services of dedicated religious priests for the holy daughters of St. Teresa in the area, the Discalced Carmelite Nuns in the Carmel of Jesus, Mary & Joseph in Fairfield. Committed to a strict religious observance, manual labor, and priestly service to souls, the Hermits of Our Lady of Mount Carmel do not operate any regular business, but subsist on alms and the charity of the faithful.

THE FAIRFIELD FOUNDATION

In addition to the hidden influence of its prayers and sacrifices, the priests of the Hermits of Our Lady of Mount Carmel offer a specific spiritual apostolate that provides possibilities of spiritual direction and preaching, even occasionally abroad. In addition, once the Hermits receive the necessary resources, they hope to establish a guest and retreat house available as a quiet retreat for priests, seminarians, religious, and the lay faithful visiting the historic, Catholic area and the beautiful chapel of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns in order to be refreshed and enkindled by the rich liturgical and spiritual life that resounds therein. Committed to a full religious observance, manual labor, and priestly service to souls, the community does not operate any regular business, but subsists on alms and the charity of the faithful. “We live upon alms” (St. Teresa of Avila). In the beginning of a religious foundation, there are significant material needs which constitute the vital, one-time investment to establish the permanent materials and setting for the community’s prayer, religious observance, and vocations for generations to come. The Hermits humbly look to the faithful to help provide for this work for Our Lord, Our Lady, the Church, and the sanctification and salvation of many souls. In particular, the community has an acute need for monthly donors to help sustain the work of its spiritual mission, and funds for the seminary studies of several future priests dedicated to serving—in fidelity and holiness—God and the members of the Mystical , the Church.
