Press Release PRESS RELEASE 10 September 2020 2020 Formula 1 Tuscan Grand Prix Factfile Renault DP World F1 Team is in Mugello for the ninth race of the 2020 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the Tuscan Grand Prix. Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello • Italy has hosted the most Grands Prix in Formula 1 history with three races based in the country this year. • The last circuit to make its debut on the F1 calendar was the Azerbaijan street circuit in Baku during the 2016 season. It was also the team’s first year back in the sport as a works team. • Andrea Dovizioso recorded the highest speed ever at the Mugello circuit when he reached 356km/h during a MotoGP Free Practice session in 2019. • In comparison, this weekend, Formula 1 cars are projected to reach top speeds of 325 km/h around the 5.245km circuit. • Last year in Mugello, the fastest qualifying lap in MotoGP was a 1:45.519 set by Marc Marquez. On Saturday, it’s predicted that we will see qualifying lap times around the region of 1min 17seconds. Team and Driver Facts • This weekend marks Daniel Ricciardo’s 180th Grand Prix start in Formula 1, only four drivers of the current grid have started more races than the Australian. • Daniel has raced in Mugello before, competing in Formula Renault during the 2007 season when he finished both races in fourth position. • Like many others on the grid, this will be Esteban Ocon’s first ever appearance at the Mugello circuit. • Renault legend Jean Pierre Jabouille won the 1976 Mugello Grand Prix in the European Formula 2 Championship, driving an Elf-Jabouille with a Renault engine. René Arnoux and Patrick Tambay – who also later drove in Formula 1 for Renault - finished second and third in the same race driving Renault powered cars. The Australian would become the first Australian to win the FIA Formula 3 title, dating back to its inaugural season in 2012. • Following back-to-back podium finishes at last weekend’s two races at Monza, Christian Lundgaard – who is currently fifth in the FIA Formula 2 Drivers’ Championship - will look to continue his strong form here this weekend. • Whilst Mugello is new for most Formula 2 teams, Guanyu Zhou has history at the circuit having previously tested here and raced in Italian F4 back in 2015. • Away from Italy, Caio Collet and Hadrien David are racing in the Formula Renault Eurocup in Magny-Cours. Caio – who is second in the Drivers’ Championship standings - claimed a Formula Renault Eurocup record for the most consecutive points finishes in the series at the third round of the championship at the Nürburgring. • Hadrien, meanwhile, prepares for his home race. In his most recent appearance at the the Magny- Cours circuit, Hadrien scored three podium finishes. It was a race where we wanted to score points to them all so far. It’s also back to another Italian race and I’ve had make sure we keep in touch with our direct rivals. From Friday it good results in Italy this year so I’m hoping to have another strong was clear the weekend would be tough, especially with learning one this weekend. 27 Patrick Tambay – The Ferrari Years By Massimo Burbi with Patrick Tambay Photographs by Paul‐Henri Cahier Foreword by Alain Prost Publication Date: 5th May 2016 Hardback, RRP: £60.00, ISBN: 978‐1‐910505‐12‐0 Format 280x235mm, Page Extent: 300pp, Over 175 photographs “This fascinating book is an emotional rollercoaster of a story about two years that changed Patrick’s career and his entire life.” Alain Prost This is the emotional story of Patrick Tambay’s rollercoaster Formula 1 ride with Ferrari. The saga began in 1982 with the tragedy of his friend and fellow driver Gilles Villeneuve’s death in the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder and then unfolded as Tambay took Villeneuve’s place in car number 27, achieved race victories and, as the 1983 season developed, fought for the World Championship. Told in 27 chapters, this is a tale not only of Formula 1 in those colourful years but also a rare and revealing account of life insider Maranello in the twilight of the Enzo Ferrari era, supported by magnificent photographs by Paul‐Henri Cahier. Highlights: British GP, 1982: At Brands Hatch Tambay’s second race for Ferrari beings his first‐ever podium finish, in his 51st Formula 1 start German GP, 1982: After team‐mate Didier Pironi’s career‐ending crash during practice at Hockenheim, Tambay lifts his sombre Ferrari team with his first Fomula 1 win. Italian GP, 1982: In front of Ferrari’s emotional home crowd at Monza, Tambay finishes second, with the great Mario Andretti, his team‐mate for this one race, behind him in third place.

  • Do You Remember… Mario Andretti's Superb Monza Comeback
LATEST / FEATURE Do you remember… Mario Andretti’s superb Monza comeback ITALY Formula1.com 31 Aug 2015 There has been a plethora of memorable stand-in performances in F1 racing’s rich history, but for many Mario Andretti’s emotional cameo for Ferrari at the 1982 Italian Grand Prix remains the finest of them all… 0:00 / 0:00 © LAT Photographic “Did I accept as a favour to Mr Ferrari? Well, sure, up to a point. But mainly I did it as a favour to me! Jesus, what kind of guy can say no to Ferrari at Monza?" Mario Andretti had been out of F1 proper for the best part of a year, racing IndyCars in his homeland, when he received the call from the Old Man. Sure, he had commitments stateside, and no, his last Grand Prix outing - a one-off appearance for Williams at Long Beach earlier in the 1982 season - had not gone at all smoothly, but how could he turn down the chance to race for Ferrari at Monza, the very same circuit where, as a 14- year-old, he’d screamed himself hoarse supporting Prancing Horse star Alberto Ascari? The answer was simple: he couldn’t. Andretti’s Monza invitation had come amid desperate times for the Scuderia, who’d lost talismanic star Gilles Villeneuve to a fatal crash at Zolder in May and then seen his championship-leading team mate Didier Pironi suffer what looked to be career-ending injuries in another horrific shunt at Hockenheim barely three months later. To make matters worse, Patrick Tambay, the man with the unenviable task of filling Villeneuve’s vaunted number 27 cockpit, had been forced to pull out of the most recent round at Dijon because of severe back pain.

  • Racing Heroes and Grieving Widows: a Study of the Representation of Death in Motorsport by Jean-Simon Demers
Department of communication Racing heroes and grieving widows: A study of the representation of death in motorsport By Jean-Simon Demers Thesis submitted to the Graduate studies faculty for the Communication master’s program Master of Arts Supervisor: Mark Lowes University of Ottawa Ottawa, Ontario 2018-09-23 © Jean-Simon Demers, Ottawa, Canada, 2018 Abstract Gilles Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna, Greg Moore, Dale Earnhardt. Only four of a number of high- profile race car drivers to have lost their lives taking part in events at the highest levels of motorsport. The aim of the present study is to analyze the coverage of death in high-level motorsport in the printed sports news of La Presse and The Toronto Star in Canada for the 1982 to 2017 period inclusively. Mobilizing the existing literature on risk-taking, namely Lyng’s concept of edgework, as well as Hall’s work on representation, a thematic analysis of a sample of sports news articles (N=488) was conducted. Three main themes emerged from the analysis. The discussion surrounding motorsport fatalities revolved around the individual (the deceased driver), the social aspect of the death (primarily the family members left behind), and journalistic practices (how to cover death). In conclusion, the coverage of death in motorsport was found to be an instance where the athlete is heroized and sometimes revered even decades after their death. In this aspect, the figure of Gilles Villeneuve remains pivotal to motorsport discussions in Canada, even to this day. It also was found that sports journalists, through their coverage of deadly accidents, enact the traditional roles of the journalist in offering social criticism of their subject matter to their readers, and that motorsport drivers enact a highly specific type of masculinity when practicing their sport.
