information from the 1st annual surveillance including the required progress for closing out conditions for continued certification. This report also includes the client action plans for each condition with associated timelines. This fishery was assessed using the MSC developed default assessment tree. The surveillance audit for 2012 utilized the MSC Certification Requirements and Guidance to Certification Requirements (v1.2 and 1.1 respectively). The surveillance audit was conducted by SCS lead auditor Ms. Adrienne Vincent and Mr. Don Parsons. Mr. Parsons was on the original assessment team. A stakeholder meeting was held in the afternoon of 13th November, 2012 at the offices of Intertek Moody Marine. At the request of the management agency, DFO, and other participants, SCS conducted a joint meeting with Intertek Moody Marine that was also conducting the 4th annual surveillance and re-assessment of the harmonized shrimp fishery that takes place in the same Shrimp Fishing Areas (SFAs 13, 14 and 15). The surveillance meetings took place at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth Nova Scotia on 14 November, 2012. MSC Certification and Conditions for Continued Compliance An MSC certificate is valid for a period of 5-years. During the initial certification, 4 conditions were identified (see final report on MSC website1). Conditions must be closed-out before the end of the certification period in June 2016. Each of the conditions to certification was addressed with the client action plan. The action plan includes the actions to be undertaken, responsible parties and timeframe for meeting milestone goals. During this and each surveillance audit, the audit team will check progress against these milestones. The surveillance team will also “spot check” other performance indicators from the original assessment to verify that the fishery is still in compliance with the MSC requirements. Results from the audit are published in the form of a report to the MSC website 30 days after the onsite visit. The client group has an opportunity to review the report and respond before publication. The audit team evaluates progress toward closing conditions as “ahead of target,” “on target,” or “behind target.” This is based on whether there is enough evidence that sufficient progress is being made relative to the client action plan timeframe for milestones. If a “spot check” of performance indicators reveals that the Performance Indicator (PI) no longer meets all scoring elements of the Scoring Guidepost 80 (SG80), an additional “condition” will be raised that must be addressed within the life of the certificate. Systematik og navngivning Slægten Lycodes Reinhardt, 1831 omfatter 64 arter (Froese & Pauly 2019), og den adskilles fra andre af familiens slægter på tilstedeværelsen af nogle bruskudvækster på underkæben, der muligvis har en funktion i forbindelse med fødesøgningen (Andersson 1994). Slægtens arter er udbredt i arktiske og tempererede farvande, flest arter i det nordlige Stillehav og arktiske farvande. Der findes også en enkelt art, som når helt ned til Sydafrika. Mange arter udviser stor geografisk, størrelses- og kønsbetinget variation, og slægtens systematik har derfor været ret turbulent. Den almindelige ålebrosmes systematik er ingen undtagelse. Lycodes gracilis blev beskrevet fra Norge i 1867. I 1880 blev arten beskrevet ved Island under navnet Lycodes lugubris (Lütken, 1880). Jensen (1904), reducerede arterne til underarter af Vahls ålebrosme (Lycodes vahlii), som Reinhardt havde beskrevet allerede i 1831. I 1906 blev underarten Lycodes vahlii septentrionalis beskrevet af Knipowitsch fra den sydlige del af Barentshavet. Ligeledes blev fiskene ved Canada og Vestgrønland opfattet som to forskellige underarter. Andriashev (1954, 1986) reducerede de fem underarter til to: Lycodes vahlii vahlii med 113-119 ryghvirvler (vest for Grønland) og Lycodes vahlii gracilis med 98-108 ryghvirvler (øst for Grønland).

New information on distribution and abundance of West Greenland (59°50I-73°21IN) eelpouts, was obtained during six bottom trawl surveys (616 hauls) and three longline surveys (78 sets) conducted in the period 1992-1998, at depths from 56 to 1495 m. Atotal of 17 eelpout taxa were recorded from 407 trawl hauls and 64 longline settings. Further, information on temperature and depth ranges, population structure, reproduction and length-weight relation is given. Five species were recorded for the first time in West Greenland waters(Melanostigma atlanticum, Lycenchelys muraena, Lycenchelys sarsii, Lycodes pallidus, andLycodes sp. 1) and six were new to Canadian waters(L. muraena, L. sarsii, Lycodes luetkenii, Lycodes adolfi, Lycodes eudipleurostictus, andLycodes sp. 1). The distribution patterns were analysed by means of a correspondence analysis (CA). The middle slope (600-1500 m) north of the Greenland-Canada Ridge was characterised by L. adolfi, L. eudipleurostictus, Lycodes vahlii, L. luetkenii, Lycodes sp. I. and1. muraena in low densi­ ties while the shelf-upper slope (0-600 m) was characterised by L. eudipleurostictus, Lycodes seminudus, L. vahlii, Lycodes reticulatus, said Lycenchelys kolthoffi in high densities andL. sarsii, Lycodes esmarkii, Lycodes sp. 1, L. luetkenii, L. pallidus, andGymnelus spp. in low densities.     Laboratory Observations of Reproduction in the Deep-Water Zoarcids Lycodes cortezianus and Lycodapus mandibularis (Teleostei: Zoarcidae)1 Lara A. Ferry-Graham,2,3 Jeffrey C. Drazen,4 and Veronica Franklin5 Abstract: The first observations of reproduction and associated behaviors in captive bigfin eelpout, Lycodes cortezianus, and pallid eelpout, Lycodapus mandibu- laris, are reported here. One Lycodes cortezianus pair produced 13 transparent and negatively buoyant eggs that were approximately 6 mm in diameter. These were laid on a hydroid-covered rock. The development period was about 7 months, and the young that emerged were approximately 2 cm in total length. An addi- tional captive pair also exhibited mating behavior as the male repeatedly nudged the female and the pair produced a burrow under a sponge; however the male died before any mating. Two gravid female Lycodapus mandibularis were captured and laid between 23 and 46 eggs that were about 4 mm in diameter. These were released on the sandy substrate after the females moved the sand about the tank, and the eggs were negatively buoyant. These eggs were all unfertilized. Addi- tional burrowing behavior was observed from other captive individuals, but no eggs were subsequently produced. Taken together, our observations suggest that burrowing or use of other protective structures is a reproductive behavior of central importance to zoarcids. Contrary to some earlier hypotheses, even midwater species likely return to the sediment to burrow and/or deposit eggs. This behavior means that field data regarding reproduction in this family will continue to be difficult to obtain, and the contribution of further study in labo- ratory situations should not be underestimated.

The middle slope (600-1500 m) north of the Greenland-Canada Ridge was characterised by L. adolfi, L. eudipleurostictus, Lycodes vahlii, L. luetkenii, Lycodes sp. 1, and L. muraena in low densi- ties while the shelf-upper slope (0-600 m) was characterised by L. eudipleurostictus, Lycodes seminudus, L. vahlii, Lycodes reticulatus, and Lycenchelys kolthoffi in high densities and L. sarsii, Lycodes esmarkii, Lycodes sp. 1, L. luetkenii, L. pallidus, and Gymnelus spp. in low densities. Houston Department of Biology and Nefoundland Institute for Cold Ocean Science Memorial University of Newfoundand, St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada AlC 5X1 ABSTRACT Stomach contents and arasite faunas of 464 specimens of demersal fishes in 14 sp ecies were examined from the upper continental slope of the ( rand Banks off Newfoundland, Canada. Individual species tended to feed either primarily on benthic invertebrates or on pelagi food items. Most pelagic predators also fed on benthopelag: c .organisms. Infestation rate by parasites was 46 percent, ith an average of 5.5 worms per fish. Infestation rate was highe in benthic feeders (53.1%) than in pelagic feeders (28.9%). Pe cent occurrence of metazoan parasites among all fishes was: 11 rematoda 6.9%, Nematoda 36.7% and Acanthocephala 20.7%. Percy nt occurrence by group among benthic feeders was: Trematoda 5.8 %, Nematoda 53.1% and Acanthocephala 40.9%. Percent occurrence by group among pelagic feeders was: Trematoda 27.8%, Nematoda 7 2.2% and Acanthocephala 0%. There are more species ofJ3enthic fee ers (.5) than pelagic feeders (3), but pelagic feeders are more abundant (pelagic 70.93%, benthic 20.48%,). Benthic feeders are on average larger (37 = 270.6 g) than pelagic (1 = 130.6), t ut pelagic feeders represent a larger proportion of the biomass elagic 43.3%, benthic 25.94%).
