The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. Systematik og navngivning Slægten Lycodes Reinhardt, 1831 omfatter 64 arter (Froese & Pauly 2019), og den adskilles fra andre af familiens slægter på tilstedeværelsen af nogle bruskudvækster på underkæben, der muligvis har en funktion i forbindelse med fødesøgningen (Andersson 1994). Slægtens arter er udbredt i arktiske og tempererede farvande, flest arter i det nordlige Stillehav og arktiske farvande. Der findes også en enkelt art, som når helt ned til Sydafrika. Mange arter udviser stor geografisk, størrelses- og kønsbetinget variation, og slægtens systematik har derfor været ret turbulent. Den almindelige ålebrosmes systematik er ingen undtagelse. Lycodes gracilis blev beskrevet fra Norge i 1867. I 1880 blev arten beskrevet ved Island under navnet Lycodes lugubris (Lütken, 1880). Jensen (1904), reducerede arterne til underarter af Vahls ålebrosme (Lycodes vahlii), som Reinhardt havde beskrevet allerede i 1831. I 1906 blev underarten Lycodes vahlii septentrionalis beskrevet af Knipowitsch fra den sydlige del af Barentshavet. Ligeledes blev fiskene ved Canada og Vestgrønland opfattet som to forskellige underarter. Andriashev (1954, 1986) reducerede de fem underarter til to: Lycodes vahlii vahlii med 113-119 ryghvirvler (vest for Grønland) og Lycodes vahlii gracilis med 98-108 ryghvirvler (øst for Grønland). -

A1C 5X1 Canada. 3 E-mail address: [email protected] ABSTRACT Diet composition of grey seals in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Gulf) and around the coast of Newfound- land, Canada, was examined using identification of otoliths recovered from digestive tracts. Prey were recovered from 632 animals. Twenty-nine different prey taxa were identified. Grey seals sampled in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence fed mainly on capelin, mackerel, wolffish and lumpfish during the spring, but consumed more cod, sandlance and winter flounder during late summer. Overall, the southern Gulf diet was more diverse, with sandlance, Atlantic cod, cunner, white hake and Atlantic herring dominating the diet. Capelin and winter flounder were the dominant prey in grey seals sam- pled from the east coast of Newfoundland, while Atlantic cod, flatfish and capelin were the most im- portant prey from the south coast. Animals consumed prey with an average length of 20.4 cm (Range 4.2-99.2 cm). Capelin were the shortest prey (Mean = 13.9 cm, SE = 0.08, N = 1126), while wolffish were the longest with the largest fish having an estimated length of 99.2 cm (Mean = 59.4, SE = 2.8, N = 63). In the early 1990s most cod fisheries in Atlantic Canada were closed because of the collapse of the stocks. -

Distribution and abundance of eelpouts (Pisces, Zoarcidae) off West Greenland.Sarsia 85:23-48. New information on distribution and abundance of West Greenland (59°50I-73°21IN) eelpouts, was obtained during six bottom trawl surveys (616 hauls) and three longline surveys (78 sets) conducted in the period 1992-1998, at depths from 56 to 1495 m. Atotal of 17 eelpout taxa were recorded from 407 trawl hauls and 64 longline settings. Further, information on temperature and depth ranges, population structure, reproduction and length-weight relation is given. Five species were recorded for the first time in West Greenland waters(Melanostigma atlanticum, Lycenchelys muraena, Lycenchelys sarsii, Lycodes pallidus, andLycodes sp. 1) and six were new to Canadian waters(L. muraena, L. sarsii, Lycodes luetkenii, Lycodes adolfi, Lycodes eudipleurostictus, andLycodes sp. 1). The distribution patterns were analysed by means of a correspondence analysis (CA). The middle slope (600-1500 m) north of the Greenland-Canada Ridge was characterised by L. adolfi, L. eudipleurostictus, Lycodes vahlii, L. luetkenii, Lycodes sp. I. and1. muraena in low densi ties while the shelf-upper slope (0-600 m) was characterised by L. eudipleurostictus, Lycodes seminudus, L. vahlii, Lycodes reticulatus, said Lycenchelys kolthoffi in high densities andL. sarsii, Lycodes esmarkii, Lycodes sp. 1, L. luetkenii, L. pallidus, andGymnelus spp. in low densities.
