International Council for CM 2000Mini: 12 the Exploration of the Sea Mini-Symposium on Defining the Role of ICES in Supporting Biodiversity Conservation NEW DATA ON COMPOSITION AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE BARENTS SEA ICHTHYOFAUNA by A.V.Dolgov Polar Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (PINRO), 6 Knipovich Street, 1983763, Russia ABSTRACT On the basis of the materials of trawl surveys and PINRO research expeditions, as well as literature data, recent changes in the ichthyofauna of the Barents Sea and adjacent Norwegian Sea areas are described. Data on rare and observed for the first time species are presented. A corrected species list is given. Considerable changes, related to warming-up of the waters, in distribution of fish, especially of boreal Atlantic origin, are shown. The importance of collecting data on all species for fisheries investigations is noted and the necessity of conducting further fauna investigations is emphasized as this will allow to monitor~the status of the Barents Sea ecosystem. INTRODUCTION Conservation of biodiversity in ‘any ecosystem requires precise knowledge about this ecosystem. The Barents Sea (and the adjacent areas of the Norwegian Sea) is one of the most thoroughly studied areas of the World Ocean. However, data on the species composition of this area have not been revised for a long time. Despite a series of reports containing data on the Barents Sea alongside with other areas (Andriyashev, 1954; Andriyashev, Chernova, 1994; Pethon, 1984, 1998), no special list of the Barents Sea fishes is available. One of the sources of information about composition and distribution of ichthyofauna are trawl surveys during which large areas are studied at different depths. -

A NEW EELPOUT (TELEOSTEI: ZOARCIDAE) FROM THE EASTERN TROPICAL PACIFIC OCEAN M. Eric Anderson ABSTRACT A new ee]pout, Lycenchelys rnonstrosa, is described from the lower continental slope of the Gulf of Panama, eastern Pacific Ocean. It is distinguished from all other Lycenchelys in the region by possessing nine preopercu]omandibular pores, eight or nine suborbital pores, one postorbital pore, no occipital or interorbital pores, 126-132 vertebrae and far posterior dorsal fin origin, with three to seven free dorsal pterygiophores. The species appears to be somewhat peculiar among eelpouts in that 11 of the 12 known specimens lack pelvic fins; one of the fish without pelvic fins is the only one known with palatine teeth. Both characters have been used at the generic level in eelpouts . The species appears closest to three other congeners with nine preopercu]omandibular pores, known from the North Pacific and Ant- arctic lower slopes. Characters of the new species lend support to earlier conclusions that the deeper living Lycenchelys have undergone morphological modification in a similar man- ner, though they do not necessarily form a monophyletic group. Fishes of the genus Lycenchelys Gill are benthic slope and abyssal dwelling species occurring primarily in boreal seas (Goode and Bean, 1896; Jensen, 1904; Andriashev, ]955; 1958). A few species have penetrated into temperate and polar seas of the southern hemisphere (Regan, ]913; Andriashev and Permitin, ]968; Gosztonyi, 1977; DeWitt and Hureau, ]979). Garman (1899) reported the first collection of eelpouts from eastern tropical Pacific waters and since then no subsequent discoveries have been published. -

The spatial, temporal and structural distribution of Antarctic seafloor biodiversity by Jan Jansen Abstract Biodiversity is nature’s most valuable resource. The Southern Ocean contains significant levels of marine biodiversity as a result of its isolated history and a combination of exceptional environmental conditions. However, little is known about the spatial and temporal distribution of biodiversity on the Antarctic continental shelf, hindering informed marine spatial planning, policy development underpinning regulation of human activity, and predicting the response of Antarctic marine ecosystems to environmental change. In this thesis, I provide detailed insight into the spatial and temporal distribution of Antarctic benthic macrofaunal and demersal fish biodiversity. Using data from the George V shelf region in East Antarctica, I address some of the main issues currently hindering understanding of the functioning of the Antarctic ecosystem and the distribution of biodiversity at the seafloor. The focus is on spatial biodiversity prediction with particular consideration given to previously unavailable environmental factors that are integral in determining where species are able to live, and the poor relationships often found between species distributions and other environmental factors. -

Systematik og navngivning Slægten Lycodes Reinhardt, 1831 omfatter 64 arter (Froese & Pauly 2019), og den adskilles fra andre af familiens slægter på tilstedeværelsen af nogle bruskudvækster på underkæben, der muligvis har en funktion i forbindelse med fødesøgningen (Andersson 1994). Slægtens arter er udbredt i arktiske og tempererede farvande, flest arter i det nordlige Stillehav og arktiske farvande. Der findes også en enkelt art, som når helt ned til Sydafrika. Mange arter udviser stor geografisk, størrelses- og kønsbetinget variation, og slægtens systematik har derfor været ret turbulent. Den almindelige ålebrosmes systematik er ingen undtagelse. Lycodes gracilis blev beskrevet fra Norge i 1867. I 1880 blev arten beskrevet ved Island under navnet Lycodes lugubris (Lütken, 1880). Jensen (1904), reducerede arterne til underarter af Vahls ålebrosme (Lycodes vahlii), som Reinhardt havde beskrevet allerede i 1831. I 1906 blev underarten Lycodes vahlii septentrionalis beskrevet af Knipowitsch fra den sydlige del af Barentshavet. Ligeledes blev fiskene ved Canada og Vestgrønland opfattet som to forskellige underarter. Andriashev (1954, 1986) reducerede de fem underarter til to: Lycodes vahlii vahlii med 113-119 ryghvirvler (vest for Grønland) og Lycodes vahlii gracilis med 98-108 ryghvirvler (øst for Grønland). -

Several disagree- ments were recognized between the original descriptions and type specimens for L. yamatoi, and its diagnostic distinctions from L. matsubarai were no longer valid. Lycodes yamatoi is identical with L. matsubarai, and the latter name is kept for this species. A redescription is provided with some taxonomic remarks. MARINE FISHES OF THE AZORES: AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST AND BIBLIOGRAPHY. Marine fishes of the Azores: An annotated checklist and bibliography. Arquipélago. Life and Marine Sciences Supplement 1: xxiii + 242pp. Ponta Delgada. ISSN 0873-4704. ISBN 972-9340-92-7. A list of the marine fishes of the Azores is presented. The list is based on a review of the literature combined with an examination of selected specimens available from collections of Azorean fishes deposited in museums, including the collection of fish at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (Horta). Personal information collected over several years is also incorporated. The geographic area considered is the Economic Exclusive Zone of the Azores. The list is organised in Classes, Orders and Families according to Nelson (1994). The scientific names are, for the most part, those used in Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (FNAM) (Whitehead et al. 1989), and they are organised in alphabetical order within the families. Clofnam numbers (see Hureau & Monod 1979) are included for reference. Information is given if the species is not cited for the Azores in FNAM. Whenever available, vernacular names are presented, both in Portuguese (Azorean names) and in English. Synonyms, misspellings and misidentifications found in the literature in reference to the occurrence of species in the Azores are also quoted. The 460 species listed, belong to 142 families; 12 species are cited for the first time for the Azores.
