The focus is to re-assess the origins and particular nature of von Humboldt’s life and writings in the context of an understanding of contemporary liberalism and liberal theory. The author asserts that German liberalism requires a re-evaluation and the works of Wilhelm von Humboldt are a significant clue to that reconsideration. The Hon. John Roberts, P.C., hold a D. Phil from Oxford University, has taught political theory at the University of Toronto and various other universities. He had a diplomatic career in the Canadian foreign service prior to becoming a Member of the Canadian House of Commons and then a Cabinet Minister, serving in a number of portfolios under Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
