A number of contributors to the Student News have addressed various Translations [7] aspects of job seeking, public sector opportunities, and directions in applied ethnomusi- SEM 2013 Prizes [8-10] cology.2 Three issues, I suggest, have had less attention and hence I will focus on them here. One is some critical reflection on the terminology we use to reference “work” in our SEM Section Prizes [10] discipline. The third is the all-important gap between Ph.D. and employment, and what to do with it productively (other than worry). I would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing president Lei Ouyang Bryant for her leadership over the past three years. Special thanks also go to Charlotte D’Evelyn for her many years of work as secretary. ACMR has continued to grow in recent years, thanks to the dedication of past and present officers, as well as your continued support. We had a great meeting in Pittsburgh last November, with two perfor- mance presentations by members Po-wei Weng (on Beijing opera percussion) and Yuan-Yu Kuan (on erhu playing in Jiangnan sizhu). Slightly over a dozen of us also enjoyed a Chinese dinner at Sichuan Gourmet in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh before the meeting. The Rulan Chao Pian Prize for the best article on Chinese Music and the Barbara Barnard Smith Chuen-Fung Prize for the best student paper on Chinese music were also presented Wong at the meeting. We will continue to explore creative formats for future ACMR meetings, and, as always, we welcome your input. It situates the Chinese script crisis within the modern phenomenon of phonocentrism – the systematic privileging of speech over writing. It depicts the Chinese experience as an integral part of a worldwide crisis of non-alphabetic scripts in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It places the crisis of Chinese characters at the center of the making of modern Chinese language, literature, and culture. It investigates how the script crisis and the ensuing script revolution intersect with significant historical processes such as the Chinese engagement in the two World Wars, national and international education movements, the Communist revolution, and national salvation. Since the late nineteenth century, the Chinese writing system began to be targeted as the roadblock to literacy, science and democracy. Chinese and foreign scholars took the abolition of Chinese script to be the condition of modernity. A script revolution was launched as the Chinese response to the script crisis. This dissertation traces the beginning of the crisis to 1916, when Chao Yuen Ren published his English article “The Problem of the Chinese Language,” sweeping away all theoretical oppositions to alphabetizing the Chinese script. This was followed by two major movements dedicated to the task of eradicating Chinese characters: First, the Chinese Romanization Movement spearheaded by a group of Chinese and international scholars which was quickly endorsed by the Guomingdang (GMD) Nationalist government in the 1920s; Second, the dissident Chinese Latinization Movement initiated in the Soviet Union and championed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the 1930s.

As a youngster he studied classical guitar and jazz saxophone.     founder of the field Rulan Chao Pian 卞赵如兰 (1922–2013) Emily E. Wilcox Rulan Chao Pian, who taught Chinese and music at Harvard University from 1947 to 1992, was a pioneer in the fields of Chinese Song dynasty musical history and ethnomu- sicological studies of Peking opera and Sinophone popular performance. Emily E. Wilcox is an assistant professor of modern Chinese studies in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan. Professor Rulan Chao Pian 卞赵如兰 (1922–2013) was an emi- nent American ethnomusicologist who taught at Harvard University from 1947 until 1992. When appointed as a full professor in 1974, she was one of the first women to achieve this status in the university’s his- tory. Pian and her husband were also the first faculty of color to serve as housemasters at Harvard, making Pian a pioneer in the advance- ment of both women and minorities in the US academy. Pian trained a number of prominent ethnomusicologists and Sinologists during her long career, and she was instrumental in establishing the field of eth- nomusicology at Harvard. As a professor of both music and East Asian languages and civilizations, Pian’s scholarly contributions spanned sev- eral areas, including language acquisition, music history, folk perfor- mance, and traditional drama. Pian’s work is characterized by a deep commitment to empiricism, as well as a strongly analytical approach that highlights the structural and technical features of music as they relate to other frameworks of performance, such as narrative develop- ment, ritual process, and stage choreography.
