Vice-Chancellor Hyderabad – 500 046. From the Vice-Chancellor’s Desk It is a honour to present the Annual Report on the working of the University during the year 2005- 2006. I took over charge on December 30, 2005 after my predecessor demitted office on July 14, 2005. The Report speaks for the well-sustained, active pace of growth and development of the University during this year. The student strength in various disciplines this year stood at 2,641, out of which, over 51.6 percent are research scholars pursuing Ph.D. and M. Phil. / M. Tech. programmes. Women students constitute 31.88 percent of the total strength. 28.96 percent of the students are from reserved (SC and ST) categories. Besides, 789 (165 women) students were enrolled in 12 P.G. Diploma courses the University offers in distance mode. The Study India Programme (SIP) of the University aims at providing an opportunity for foreign students to experience and study various aspects of Indian Society, History and Culture and to create an international environment on the University Campus. The Programme emphasizes heritage, continuity and change in India. Under the SIP, a number of interdisciplinary courses were offered to participants from almost 200 North American and European Universities. Our distinguished faculty, numbering 257, produced over 746 research publications including 48 books during the year. They also contributed to the award of 87 Ph.D., 125 M.Phil., 80 M. Tech. and 552 Post Graduate degrees. The Faculty earned research funding for the individual research projects numbering 189 with a total outlay of about 75 crores from various national and international agencies. These projects supported 194 research scholars. Several consultancy and industry- sponsored projects were also undertaken through MoUs. Under the University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) programme, award of the UGC, an amount of about Rs. 26.93 Crores (out of the Rs. 30 crores released) has so far been spent towards procurement vii of hardware and software for Centre for Modelling, Simulation and Design (CMSD), books and journals (including online journals) and scientific equipments, and on identified action plans. Based on the recommendations of the Monitoring Committee, the University Grants Commission has accorded sanction for the release of the final instalment of Rs. 7.00 crores. Over the years our faculty have earned several national and international fellowships and awards. These incude: Ramon Magsaysay Award, Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Third World Academy of Sciences Award, the Einstein Medal, German Academic Exchange Fellowship, Japan Science and Technology Fellowship, DAAD (Germany) Fellowship, Albert Shankar International Award, Birla Science Award, SS Bhatnagar Award, Sahitya Academy Award, Swarna Jayanthi Award, J.C. Bose Award, Hamsa Awards, Pamda Shri, Padma Vibhushan, and Fellowships of the leading Science Academies of India and abroad. In addition, the Faculty visited several reputed institutes in India and abroad as Visiting Professors / Scientists. Further, the Faculty were nominated for memberships of editorial boards of several reputed international journals. Also, the faculty participated actively in the working of organizations like CSIR, UGC, DST, DAE, DBT, ICMR, NBHM, ICHR, ICPR and ICSSR in various capacities throughout the year as expert members. Valuable contributions have been made by predecessor Dr. Kota Harinarayana to the institution by mobilizing funds for research development, construction of new buildings, several infrastructure facilities. Our University is also unique in that it has attracted various government, non-government, defense organizations for liberal funding for our academic and research programmes. The University with a generous contribution from United Technologies Corporation (UTC) recently constituted a Pratt & Whitney Chair in Science and Engineering. R & D funding which was about Rs.24 crores at the beginning of 10th plan has now exceeded Rs.120 crores making this possibly the largest among all universities in India. The adult literacy campaign taken by the University in neighboring municipal areas, starting of a community college, establishing of new centre of studies, at the university are some of our unique aspects.

    Changing Ideas of Freedom in the Indian Postcolonial Context

    IDEALISM, ENCHANTMENT AND DISENCHANTMENT: CHANGING IDEAS OF FREEDOM IN THE INDIAN POSTCOLONIAL CONTEXT Yamini Worldwide, Colonial and Postcolonial Literature has represented processes of nation-formation and concepts of nationalism through experiments with forms of representation. Such experiments were quite predominant in the novel form, with its ability to incorporate vast spatial and temporal realities. Homi Bhabha’s Nation and Narration (2008) is a seminal volume discussing the innovations in the Twentieth Century Novel through a Postcolonial perspective and understanding these changes through the idea of National Literatures. The Cambridge Companion to Postcolonial Literary Studies (Neil Lazarus) and The Post-Colonial Studies Reader (Bill Ashcroft et al) present extensive discussions on the relationship between the politics of nation-formation and forms of fiction. In this article I offer a brief introduction to the evolution of the Hindi novel (1940s-1980s) with reference to the freedom movement and nationalist struggle in India. Benedict Anderson’s formulation regarding the significance of the genre of the novel in the process of nation-formation and Timothy Brennan’s concept of ‘The National Longing for Form’ published in Nation and Narration also establishes the novel as a genre representing, as well as creating, the Nation. Brennan writes It was the novel that historically accompanied the rise of the nations by objectifying the ‘one, yet many’ of the national life, and by mimicking the structure of the nation, a clearly bordered jumble of languages and styles… Its manner of presentation allowed people to imagine the special community that was the nation (Brennan, 2008: 49). Postcolonial theories have focussed on the relationship between realism and nationalism within the genre of the novel.

His rise is also illustrative example of submission by author in this book that RSS has been able to design a system that can create ‘extraordinary achievers out of ordinary people’. When the first edition of Secrets of RSS was released, air was thick with motivated propaganda about ‘Saffron terror’ and RSS was the favourite whipping boy as the face of ‘Hindu fascism’. Now as the second edition is ready for release, environment has transformed radically.

Economic reform which started in 1991 and the post-reform period put India on a high pedestal on many indicators of economic growth and resilience to external shocks.

However, this dimension is often overlooked in food systems research and policy making. Based on ethnobiological fieldwork conducted in the Kailash Sacred Landscape of far western Nepal, we show how religious festivals and rituals reenact Edited by: Andrea Pieroni, the covenant between people and the land through the numinous intercession of Hindu University of Gastronomic gods and landscape deities. To demonstrate this, we present the local calendar of Sciences, Italy the agricultural and ritual year based on data collected through household surveys Reviewed by: Rainer Willi Bussmann, and participation in festivals and agricultural activities.     International Journal of Jaina Studies (Online) Vol. 9, No. 2 (2013) 1-47 A NEGLECTED ŚVETĀMBARA NARRATIVE COLLECTION HEMACANDRASŪRI MALADHĀRIN'S UPADEŚAMĀLĀSVOPAJÑAVṚTTI PART 1 (WITH AN APPENDIX ON THE FUNERAL OF ABHAYADEVASŪRI MALADHĀRIN) Paul Dundas Scholarly investigation into processes of canonisation in religious traditions has reached such a level of productivity in recent years that it may soon be necessary to establish a canon of outstanding works which discuss the formation of scriptural canons. Research on Jainism has readily acknowledged the interest of this subject, and valuable insights have been gained into the rationales informing the groupings and listings of constituent texts of a variety of Śvetāmbara canons which were introduced from around the middle of the first millennium CE and remained operative into modern times. 1 Also of great value has been the identification of practical canons, effectively curricula or syllabi of texts taken from a range of genres and historical contexts, which have provided modern Śvetāmbara renunciants and laypeople with a framework for gaining an informed understanding of the main parameters of Jain doctrine and practice of most direct concern to them. 2 The historian of Śvetāmbara Jainism has an obvious obligation to be sensitive to the significance of established 'insider' versions of canons. Nonetheless, further possibilities remain for identifying informal Śvetāmbara textual groupings which would not readily fall under the standard canonical rubric of 'scriptural' or 'doctrinal'. In this respect I would consider as at least quasi-canonical the group of major Prakrit and Sanskrit novels or romances ( kathā / kahā ) highlighted by Christine Chojnacki, most notably Uddyotanasūri's Kuvalayamālā and Siddharṣi's Upamitibhavaprapañcakathā, which were written between the seventh and twelfth centuries and whose status was confirmed by their being subsequently epitomised in summary form in the thirteenth century.
