The Cambridge Singers Christmas Album directed by JOHN RUTTER AROLS AND CHRISTMAS MUSIC have always formed a part of the CCambridge Singers’ recorded repertoire, and this album picks out some of my The Cambridge Singers personal favourites. Most of the 23 items are taken from the two albums Christmas with the Cambridge Singers and Christmas Day in the Morning, and there are four previously unreleased tracks which were squeezed out of those two albums and which I am happy Christmas Album to have found space for here. There are three strands to the programme: traditional carols; choruses and motets; and composers’ carols. In fact these categories are not as separate as they might appear. Composers have always loved to take traditional melodies and incorporate them into their own compositions, sometimes considerably elaborating them in the process: think of all those L’homme armé masses or of Bach’s chorale treatments. The art of the arranger, widely thought of as a twentieth-century invention, is as old as composition itself. When we listen to a ‘traditional’ carol sung by a choir, we are in fact generally hear- ing the work of an identifiable composer who has arranged, in his own style, a melody by an unidentifiable or obscure composer from an earlier era. The earliest examples on this album are Victoria’s O magnum mysterium (1572), a four-voiced motet where the melodic outlines are based on a Gregorian chant, and Scheidt’s In dulci jubilo (1620), which takes one of the best-loved of all Christmas carols and turns it into a resplendent double-choir motet with two antiphonal trumpet parts.

[Program notes for The Gift of Life, by Pamela Grooms] John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and received his first musical education as a chorister at Highgate School. He went on to study music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he wrote his first published compositions and conducted his first recording while still a student. His compositional career has embraced both large and small-scale choral works, orchestral and instrumental pieces, a piano concerto, two children’s operas, music for television, and specialist writing for such groups as the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the King’s Singers. His larger choral works, Gloria (1974), Requiem (1985), Magnificat (1990), Psalmfest (1993) and Mass of the Children (2003) have been performed many times in Britain, North America, and a growing number of other countries. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, whose choir he directed in a number of broadcasts and recordings. After giving up the Clare post to allow more time for composition, he formed the Cambridge Singers as a professional chamber choir primarily dedicated to recording, and he now divides his time between composition and conducting. In 1996 the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Music upon him in recognition of his contribution to church music. He was honored in the 2007 Queen’s New Year Honours List, being awarded a CBE for services to music. (www.johnrutter.com) John Rutter’s long-awaited new major work The Gift of Life is a six-movement choral celebration of the living earth, of creation, and of life itself, offering a kaleidoscope of moods from contemplative and prayerful to majestic and inspirational.

HIS ALBUM GATHERS TOGETHER most of the carols I have Tcomposed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a programme which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. The I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own— in fact my first two published compositions, written in my teens, were the John Rutter Nativity carol and the Shepherd’s pipe carol. This was more subversive than it sounds: at the time, the only officially approved style of composition for a classically-trained music student was post-Webernian serialism, which never appealed to me much, and writing Christmas carols was an undercover way of Christmas slipping a tune or two into circulation at a time of year when music critics are generally on vacation. No one seemed to mind, so from time to time I have continued to write and arrange carols, encouraged by Sir David Willcocks, my Album senior co-editor on several volumes of the Carols for Choirs series. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years. The other pieces are all anthems, primarily intended for use in the context GLORIA of a church service. They range in difficulty from very simple to fairly The Sacred Music of John Rutter challenging, though it was my hope in writing them that none would be beyond the reach of a capable church choir. Although the accompaniments were originally for organ (or, in the case of For the beauty of the earth and All he music heard on this recording represents a cross-section of the sacred things bright and beautiful, for piano), I enjoyed scoring them for orchestra Tchoral pieces I have written over a period of some thirty years, from the and prefer them in this form. The unaccompanied pieces, however, (Cantate 1970s to 2004. Two paramount considerations shaped it: first, the performers Domino, God be in my head, Open thou mine eyes, and A prayer of Saint Patrick) and occasions it was written for, and second the texts, which I always choose reflect my love of the a cappella medium. Madison Symphony Orchestra Program Notes December 13-14-15, 2019 94th Season / Subscription Concert No.4 Michael Allsen Welcome to the 2019 “Madison Symphony Christmas.” This program has become a Madison holiday tradition, and is always among our most popular offerings. The program moves from classical styles in the first half—culminating in Handel’s great “Hallelujah” chorus—to lighter holiday music in the second half. And as always, we end with a rockin’ Gospel finale… and a chance for you to sing along! This program features three great choral groups from Madison, the Madison Youth Choirs, the Mount Zion Gospel Choir, and our own Madison Symphony Chorus. We are also proud to feature one of the MSO’s own, harpist Johanna Wienholts. John Rutter is celebrated as both a choral conductor and as a composer of sacred music. His Cambridge Singers have received critical acclaim in a series of performances and recordings of repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to Rutter’s own works. As a composer and arranger, and he has produced children’s operas, orchestral works, and a multitude of choral works, from small anthems to settings of the Gloria, Magnificat, and Requiem. Rutter has explained that Christmas music has “…always occupied a special place in my affections, ever since I sang in my first Christmas Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols as a nervous ten-year-old boy soprano. For me, and I suspect for most of the other members of the Highgate Junior School Choir, it was the high point of our singing year, diligently rehearsed and eagerly anticipated for weeks beforehand.
