    Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates.

Abstract. This paper is a cross linguistic study examining the structure of deictic day-name systems of 157 of the world's languages. Most of these systems reveal a recurring structural symmetry in the number of diurnal units identified either side of 'today'. As well as this type of numerical symmetry, most languages exhibit a morphological symmetry, and several a lexical symmetry. A small number of languages have numerically and/or morphologically asymmetrical systems. The nature of these symmetries and asymmetries in the light of linguistic relativity is briefly explored. 1.     Applying Kaufman’s model of Zapotecan verb classification to Sierra Juárez Zapotec Kate Riestenberg Georgetown University 1.0 Overview • Kaufman (1987, 1988): Zapotecan languages exhibit four verb classes traced to Proto-Zapotec. • Shown for several Zapotec languages in the Central and Western branches (Beam de Azcona, 2004; Enríquez Licón, 2009; Pérez Báez & Kaufman, 2012, in press; Pérez Báez, Sicoli, Benn, & Riestenberg, 2014; Pérez Báez, Sicoli, Cata, & Cruz Santiago, 2013; Riestenberg & Sicoli, 2015; Smith-Stark, 2002) as well as some related Chatino languages (Campbell, 2011; Villard, 2009). • In contrast, existing documentation of Sierra Juárez Zapotec (SJZ), a group of Northern Zapotec varieties, describes 6-12 verb classes (Bartholomew, 1983; Foreman, 2006; Tejada, 2012). • Kaufman’s system can be straightforwardly applied to data from two SJZ varieties, Atepec Zapotec and Macuiltianguis Zapotec, reducing the number of classes and prefixes needed to account for SJZ verbal morphology and requiring a reanalysis of a subset of verb roots. • This approach (1) accounts for certain historical sound changes, and (2) makes more explicit morphological connections between Northern Zapotec and other branches of Zapotecan. Introduction1 8 9 10 In this chapter, we present a survey of word prosodic systems in the lan- guages of Middle America (Campbell 1997: Chapter 5). Middle America 11 includes Central America and Mexico. The term ‘Middle America’, refer- 12 13 ring to a geographical unit, is not synonymous to ‘Mesoamerica,’ which refers to a culture area ‘‘defined on the basis of common characteristics 14 that were present during the conquest times’’ (Sua´rez 1983: 11). Bearing 15 16 this di¤erence in mind, we here o¤er a survey of the families and isolate ´ 17 languages that Suarez groups within the Mesoamerican group and that Campbell (1997) considers in his chapter on ‘Middle American’ languages; 18 19 this does not include the ‘West Indies’ (Antilles, Bahamas, Turks and 20 Caico islands) or Cuba. 21 22 23 2. Además, esto nos ayudará a proporcionarle un mejore servicio a sus hijos. El mismo día que una escuela comenzó a usar esta guía, una familia de un pueblo originario llegó a registrar a sus hijos. Con la guía, el personal de la escuela pudo reconocer la lengua originaria de la familia. El padre de familia, contento, compartió conocimientos sobre la lengua con el personal de la escuela. Terraciano, Chair My project traces the evolution of the Zapotec cultural practice of guelaguetza, an indigenous sharing system of collaboration and exchange in Mexico, from pre-Columbian and colonial times to the present. Ironically, the term "guelaguetza" was appropriated by the Mexican government in the twentieth century to promote an annual dance festival in the city of Oaxaca that has little to do with the actual meaning of the indigenous tradition. My analysis of Zapotec-language alphabetic sources from the Central Valley of Oaxaca, written from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, reveals that Zapotecs actively participated in the sharing system during this long period of transformation. My project demonstrates that the Zapotec sharing economy functioned to build and reinforce social networks among households in Zapotec communities. I argue that guelaguetza enabled communities of the Central Valley of Oaxaca to survive the trauma of conquest, depopulation, and external demands for local resources. Zapotecs relied on the system to maintain control of valuable community resources, such as property, labor, and ii agricultural goods.
