The Diffusion of Foreign Cultural Products: The Case Analysis of Japanese Comics (Manga) Market in the US Takeshi Matsui Hitotsubashi University/Princeton University Abstract This paper outlines the historical development of the US manga (Japanese comics) industry from the 1980s through the present in order to address the question why foreign cultural products become popular in offshore markets in spite of cultural difference. This paper focuses on local publishers as “gatekeepers” in the introduction of foreign culture. Using complete data on manga titles published in the US market from 1980 to 2006 (n=1,058), this paper shows what kinds of manga have been translated, published, and distributed for over twenty years and how the competition between the two market leaders, Viz and Tokyopop, created the rapid market growth. -

Specifically, the representation of the archetype of American superheroes as represented in the Japanese manga and anime series, My Hero Academia. Through examination of the extant corpus of manga chapters and anime episodes for the franchise, the author draws comparison between characters and situations in the manga series with examples from American comic books by Marvel Comics and DC Comics. -

The course will focus on major artists, genres, and works of manga produced in Japan and translated into English. 3 units. GE Area: C-2 1 Course Description Manga is one of the most important art forms to emerge from Japan. Its importance as a medium of visual culture and storytelling cannot be denied. The aim of this course is to introduce students and to expose students to as much of the history and breadth of manga as possible. The breadth and scope of manga is limitless, as every imaginable genre exists. With over 10,000 manga being published every year (roughly one third of all published material in Japan), there is no way that one course can cover the complete history of manga, but we will cover as much as possible. We will read a number of manga together as a class and discuss them. -

This document intends to be a performance guide to Miki’s Sohmon III: for Soprano, Marimba and Piano (1988). The first chapter provides an introduction to the composer and his work. It also introduces methods of intercultural and artistic borrowing in the Japanese arts, and it defines the four basic principles of Japanese aesthetics. The second chapter focuses on the interpretation and pronunciation of Sohmon III’s song text. -

Back To The Future: Classical Figures In Comics 287 Chapter 13 Back to the Future: Classical Figures in Comics Back to the Future: Reviving Classical Figures in Japanese Comics Carla Scilabra The aim of this chapter* is to investigate how Classical heritage1 is perceived and depicted in Japanese comic production. Manga series represent a particu- lar type of comic production which first appeared immediately after the Sec- ond World War and then grew – in a fairly progressive process – until it had reached almost every corner of the world.2 Nowadays, the manga phenome- non can be considered a central form of Japanese pop-culture expression, both in terms of the value system, themes, and worldview that it represents, and in the way in which it is widely diffused among different demographics. Simulta- neously, manga can also be seen as a global trend, thanks to the favor it has gained in different countries throughout the years.3 In order to analyze this process, this study will consider elements from the Greco-Roman historical and cultural heritage that appear in these comics and how they are represented, before focusing on a more intricate question that, although it might seem thorny, could lead to a more complete understanding * This article uses the Hepburn Romanization system for the transliteration of Japanese names and words.
