This document intends to be a performance guide to Miki’s Sohmon III: for Soprano, Marimba and Piano (1988). The first chapter provides an introduction to the composer and his work. It also introduces methods of intercultural and artistic borrowing in the Japanese arts, and it defines the four basic principles of Japanese aesthetics. The second chapter focuses on the interpretation and pronunciation of Sohmon III’s song text. -

Helsinki 2015 ISBN 978-951-51-1472-3 (paperback) ISBN 978-951-51-1473-0 (PDF) Unigrafia Helsinki 2015 ABSTRACT Japanese literature in English translation has a history of 165 years, but it was not until after the hostilities of World War II ceased that any single publisher outside Japan put out a sustained series of novel-length translations. The New York house of Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. published thirty-four titles of Japanese literature in English translation in hardcover between the years 1955 to 1977. This “Program,” as it came to be called, was carried out under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Harold Strauss (1907-1975), who endeavored to bring the then-active modern writers of Japan to the stage of world literature. Strauss and most of the translators who made this Program possible were trained in military language schools during World War II. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the publisher’s policies and publishing criteria in the selection of texts, the actors involved in the mediation process and the preparation of the texts for market, the reception of the texts and their impact on the resulting translation profile of Japanese literature in America, England and elsewhere. -

Travel in Rībi Hideo’s Novels or the Search for an Alternative Writing Style in Japanese Dan Fujiwara University of Toulouse – Jean Jaurès / French Research Institute on East Asia (IFRAE) Introduction Since the early 1990s,1 the Japanese literary scene has seen the emergence of works which, although marginal in number, have come to be collectively categorized as “border-crossing literature” (ekkyō bungaku)2 or “Japanese-language literature” (nihongo bungaku).3 Characterized primarily by being written in Japanese by non-native authors, these works have tended to be analyzed in the light of the globalized modern world, which anthropologist Aoki Tamotsu calls the “age of big movement of information, people and things” (hito mono jyōhō no dai-idō no jidai) (Aoki, 2001), and the challenges it faces, including multilin- gualism, multiculturalism and national identity crises. -

The Creation of a Japanese Writer for the Global Age The Case of Haruki Murakami Alona U. Guevarra Ateneo de Manila University Abstract The case of Haruki Murakami’s rise to dominance in both the Japanese and global literary fields is truly exceptional. It is rare for a single author to intro- duce so much innovation in a literary field in his own lifetime. However, due to the fruitful combination of Murakami’s own talent, the cooperation of his literary collaborators, Murakami, Inc., the advancement in technology (i.e., the Internet) that has allowed Murakami to be in touch with his readers, and his exceptional understanding of English, Murakami has contributed much to Japan’s contemporary literature in the age of global literature. In addition to these factors, it must be emphasized that Murakami’s agency of transforming the conservative literary field of Japan into something more accessible to both the Japanese and the non-Japanese has made Murakami a force that has also transformed Japan’s Post-World War, modern literary field into a field that is open to accommodate postmodern techniques in writing, reflective of its historical position or context and global in its reach. — 講演 — Toward a New Age of World Literature The Boundary of Contemporary Japanese Literature and Its Shifts in the Global Context A Keynote Speech delivered at the International Seminar Redefining the Concept of World Literature on July 19, 2006, at the University of Indonesia. Mitsuyoshi Numano Toward a New Age of World Literature It is well known that Goethe said to his disciple Johann Peter Eckermann in 1827: “Poetry is the universal possession of mankind, revealing itself everywhere and at all times in hundreds and hundreds of men. National literature is now a rather unmeaning term; the epoch of world literature is at hand, and everyone must strive to hasten its approach.”1 This was the moment when Goethe coined the word “Weltliteratur.” First of all, I must make it clear that I do not share Goethe’s opinion about the capability of “universal poetry” to transcend the borders of nations and lan- guages. The tragic experience of the 20th century showed us that, contrary to Goethe’s utopian expectations, each national literature has retained its deep meaning. In the age of globalization and the Internet, we are witnessing a very complicated and dynamic interaction between attempts to “stay put” in one’s own culture and to “cross over” its borders. It is in this new context that we should redefine the contemporary significance of the notion of World Literature. World literature is not one; its various languages and nations make it so diverse that one feels at a loss facing it; nobody can pos- sibly grasp it in its entirety. -

Not only the Western world but also in Asian countries controversies surrounding language and identity, such as ‘monolingualism’ argued by Jacques Derrida, are important issues. As scholars have discussed, Japan is one of these Asian countries where so-called ‘One nation, One language’ idea has been propagated over the decades (Loveday 2). Similar to other nation-states, many modern-day Japanese people believe that Japan is a monolingual nation-state, thus, having a good command of the Japanese language is a privilege of Japanese citizens and the ability is one of the important foundations of Japanese national identity. In spite of the common belief of monolingual Japan, the Japanese language has been in a diverse environment through the ages. According to Patrick Heinrich, who studies Japanese language minorities, the ideas of the European nation-state and national language had never existed officially in Japan until the beginning of the Meiji era (from 1868 onward), when Western countries began to negotiate with Japan for opening and ‘modernizing’ the country (4). -

V. Starr East Asian Library When and in what ways did film culture take shape in Osaka? In what ways did it change over time? In the Meiji and Taisho Periods, Tokyo prospered as a site of both film production and film consumption; Kyoto was active as a site of production, but had less success in terms of film consumption; and most regional cities showed little success in terms of either film production or consumption. Where does Osaka fit in? How did the geographic and historical factors of the city of Osaka shape and develop its film culture? How is a history of film depicted from the perspective of Osaka different from the traditional history of Japanese film, centered as it is on Tokyo's film culture? Using Meiji- and Taisho-Period film theaters as an example, I will trace the relationship between Osaka's urban change and film culture, and explore the process in which overlapping older and newer cultural paradigms gave birth to a new cultural diversity. -
