Proceedings of the 2013 Symposium on Experiential Education Research Proceedings of the 2013 Symposium on Experiential Education Research presented at the 41st Annual International AEE Conference Denver, CO October 31-November 3, 2013 1 Welcome to SEER Welcome to the 13th Annual Symposium on Experiential Education Research (SEER). The purpose of this symposium is to provide a formal setting for the reporting of research in the broad areas of experiential education. Toward that end, all the research presentations were blind reviewed by a panel of referees, and the scores tabulated by the SEER co-chairs before final decisions were made and themed sessions assembled. Whether accepted or not, the authors who submitted material should be congratulated for their efforts. This year, we are pleased to re-introduce the SEER poster session. Due to the many quality proposals submitted this year, we included the poster session as a way to provide an audience for these studies. We also continue to include a key points and summary of potential research topics discussions to each of the SEER sessions. As is now a SEER tradition, we are delighted to open SEER with a reception and address for the winner of the 2013 Distinguished Researcher Award, Dr. Alan Ewert. We are pleased Dr. Ewert has agreed to open our 13th SEER with his thoughts about experiential education research. Along with the researchers who submitted their work for review, we also wish to recognize others for their efforts in making the symposium a reality. First, we would like to thank the AEE and staff members, including Shawn Tierney and Cailtin Leahy and the 2013 Conference host team for their support and coordination of SEER, as well as the JEE editorial team and the AEE Council on Research and Evaluation (CORE) for ongoing support of SEER. We owe a great deal of gratitude to the scholars who graciously served as reviewers of the submitted abstracts: Mat Duerden, Garrett Hutson, Marni Goldenberg, Jillisa Overholt, Alison Rheingold, Jayson Seamon, Amy Shellman, Anita Tucker, Karen Warren, Mary Wells, and Frank Vernon. We would like to especially thank all of you attendees of this year’s Symposium. It is your interest that ultimately drives the research and practice relationship in the AEE. THELIN Dissertation Director: Dr. John V. Pavlik As with other aspects of our culture today, wedding planning is increasingly discussed and implemented online. Information is disseminated through online media attention, advertising, and computer mediated communication. The latter provides an avenue through which the impact of community building and relational culture can be established. My dissertation analyzes an online wedding planning forum on TheKnot.com to exemplify the ways by which a community is built through online postings and discusses the characteristics of this community. Utilizing the uses and gratification theory, content gratifications are examined through the types of topics publically viewable on an active online wedding planning Website. Because of the extensive reach of such forums, one particular region, New Jersey, will be examined. Process gratifications will be discussed as participants share personal experiences from their time spent on this particular online bulletin board planning their wedding celebration. Furthermore, the dynamics of interaction among this group will be analyzed over the course of half a calendar year and will show the types of interaction taking place through content analysis.

Directed by Dunstan and starring Josh Stewart (The Dark Knight Rises, The Collector), Emma Fitzpatrick (The Social Network) and Christopher McDonald (“Boardwalk Empire,” Requiem for a Dream), the film centers on a traumatized man forced to help rescue a beautiful woman who has become the latest obsession of a crazed killer who “collects” humans in a booby- trapped house of horrors. When ELENA (Fitzpatrick) is talked into attending an underground warehouse party with her friends, she finds herself caught in a nightmarish trap where the revelers are mowed, sliced and crushed to death by a macabre series of contraptions operated by a masked psychopath. When the grisly massacre is over, Elena is the only survivor. But before she can escape, she is locked in a trunk and transported to an unknown location. À travers la fictive agence de publicité Sterling Cooper & Partners et de son charismatique directeur artistique, Don Draper, la série personnifie la culture corporatiste des cols blancs et les nouveaux défis encourus par l’homme de l’organisation dans les années soixante. Basée sur la méthode de l’historicisme, cette analyse historique met en évidence la manière dont Mad Men incarne cette décennie à partir des sources populaires telles que les romans, les films ou les magazines. Ce type de documents sont pris par les créateurs de la série comme l’expression des certaines valeurs et attitudes des années soixante mais aussi bien comme outil pour la critique des idées consacrées. Mad Men nous permet de comprendre la manière dont la révolution des techniques publicitaires se déroule dans le décor d’une société où les grands enjeux restent encore non résolus.
