Kazakhstan’s producers participate in international co-production and filmmakers regularly draw attention at the world’s leading film festivals. Although to date the Republic has no special Law on Cinema, drafts for a new legislation have been discussed in recent years both in the film industry and at the Ministry of Culture. • Iranian Women's Quest for Self-Liberation Through
IRANIAN WOMEN’S QUEST FOR SELF-LIBERATION THROUGH THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA: AN EMANCIPATORY PEDAGOGY TANNAZ ZARGARIAN A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO December 2019 © [Tannaz Zargarian, 2019] i Abstract This dissertation examines the discourse of body autonomy among Iranian women. It approaches the discourse of body autonomy by deconstructing veiling, public mobility, and sexuality, while considering the impact of society, history, religion, and culture. Although there are many important scholarly works on Iranian women and human rights that explore women’s civil rights and freedom of individuality in relation to the hijab, family law, and sexuality, the absence of work on the discourse of body autonomy—the most fundamental human right—has created a deficiency in the field. My research examines the discourse of body autonomy in the context of liberation among Iranian women while also assessing the role of the internet as informal emancipatory educational tools. To explore the discourse of body autonomy, I draw upon critical and transnational feminist theory and the theoretical frameworks of Derayeh, Foucault, Shahidian, Bayat, Mauss, and Freire. Additionally, in-depth semi-structured interviews with Iranian women aged 26 to 42 in Iran support my analysis of the practice and understanding of body autonomy personally, on the internet, and social media. The results identify and explicate some of the major factors affecting the practice and awareness of body autonomy, particularly in relation to the goal of liberation for Iranian women.

  • Shattered Glass
Movie Kit Shattered Glass Year of Release: 2003 Rating: PG-13 Length: 94 min English level: Medium Director: Billy Ray Starring: Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny Themes: Journalistic Integrity, Media Literacy, Anti-Corruption Warning/General Advisory Includes some profane language, brief drug use Shattered Glass is the true story of a personable young journalist’s rapid rise to becoming a top feature writer at The New Republic, a popular American magazine with many articles on American politics and culture. Twenty-something year old Stephen Glass’ notoriety grew through his ability to find entertaining human interest angles to what otherwise may have just been typical news stories. His career possibilities seemed limitless until it was discovered that Glass was guilty of journalistic fraud, where 27 of his 41 published stories were either partially or completely made up. Additional Movie Background In the mid-1990s, Stephen Glass was making a name for himself by writing a series of topical and entertaining feature articles for The New Republic magazine. When his stories received increased scrutiny, it was discovered that he made up sources, quotations and sometimes even entire situations for many of his stories. His credibility destroyed, Glass was dismissed by The New Republic and his career in journalism was finished. One of Glass’ most successful stories, also featured in this movie, was about how technology companies try and prevent hackers from damaging their products. In his piece “Hack Heaven,” Glass wrote about how a teenage hacker Ian Restil was given a lucrative job by software company Jukt Micronics so that he would stop hacking into the company’s security system.

  • Conspiracy Theory? the Ethical Paradox of “Big Is Bad”
757 CONSPIRACY THEORY? THE ETHICAL PARADOX OF “BIG IS BAD” ARNOLD J. JOHNSON† I. INTRODUCTION The late 1950s and early 1960s elicit fond memories amongst to- day’s baby boomers, who annoy successor generations with their em- bellished reflections on the “good ol’ days.” A dawning of America they would say, as the store fronts of a plethora of thriving middle class towns struck a seemingly perfect balance between small business and retail juggernauts the likes of F.W. Woolworth Company, J.C. Penny, Sears, Roebuck & Company, and Montgomery Ward. The local banker was the pillar of the community, the family doctor kept everyone well, and the town dentist filled teeth–quite a few of them it would seem. More importantly, there was simply no problem, legal or personal, too big for that iconic lawyer in the small Main Street office. It was a time of optimism and a “can do” attitude, as the Ameri- can business machine that would eventually be disparaged as “big” was creating jobs and building chrome-laden cars and trucks, washers and dryers, televisions and radios, and countless other contraptions that would bring convenience to everyday life. Ethics and profession- alism were a given, as reputations mattered in these communities where everyone knew everyone else. For the first and last time in this article it might be said that big was good, or at least not presumed bad. What happened? Could it simply be that business itself changed, becoming more detached from the public as it grew larger and more complex? Perhaps the world evolved, with big business falling out of favor with inevitable shifts in pop culture and politics.

  • Almaty Retail Guide
ALMATY Cushman & Wakefield Global Cities Retail Guide Cushman & Wakefield | Almaty | 2019 0 Almaty remains the largest city in Kazakhstan, its key business centre and primary retail destination; despite not being the country’s capital city. Almaty has almost 3 times the number of international companies operating within the city than in Nur-Sultan, providing ever-stronger competition against the capital. Almaty has recently been challenged by the economic instability in the region adversely affecting the retail sector. However, the city still benefits from increasing retail turnover, a low unemployment rate, the highest standard of living in Kazakhstan and a growing population. Almaty’s retail sector comprises a mix of traditional ‘bazaar‘-style markets, western-style shopping malls and a small element of on-street retail. Consumers are gradually moving away from shopping at markets and the success of shopping malls indicates a growing consumer demand for this type of retail format. More developers are adopting global retail concepts and trends. The market is witnessing a shift from primarily shopping destinations to one-stop shopping, dining and entertainment experience. Based on the total international-standard retail stock in the city of 423,000 sqm of leasable area and using the estimated population of 2 million people, the volume of retail space per 1,000 capita stands at 210 sqm, that is comparatively less ALMATY mature than developed European markets. Economic uncertainty adversely affected the Almaty retail development pipeline, which as a result is currently comprised of OVERVIEW a few existing projects scheduled for refurbishment and expansion of the existing shopping areas.
