There i s accessible to the public little information— at least as it exists at present—concerning the ancient Institute of Citeaux, which in the Ages of Faith found so much favour in our own Island. Hence many kind and zealous friends have expressed to us, more than once, their desire to see this deficiency in the history of our present. religious Institutions, filled up, by a work, which would be within the reach of the greater part of Catholic readers. The f act, moreover, that, of all the ancient Orders, the Cistercian is the only one which has arisen from the grave, in which they were indiscriminately buried in this country at the period of the Reformation, in all the vigour of its primitive discipline, gives this request an additional interest. We h ave given, therefore, the following historical com pilation our approbation and authority. Much information concerning our holy Institute in the present century, has been derived from the testimony of those who are still its faithful and zealous members. Gamble's request that I would write this Foreword are (1) that I was a very unworthy successor of \Villiam Bedell, the greatest, most saintly and learned of the long line of Bishops of Kilmore; (2) that I have, I think, read all the lives of Bedell which have been published; and (3) that his example was the greatest inspiration in my work in the diocese for which he laboured so heroically, and where his influence abides. How remarkably the example he set of what a Bishop's life and work should be has been an inspiration to his successors may be illustrated by the reverence in which Alfred George Elliott, Bishop of Kilmore from 1897- 1913, held the memory of \Villiam Bedell. He paid his great predecessor a tribute which was deeper than hero worship. Symbolic of this reverence and admiration was his determination to be buried as Pear tu the grave of \Vi!liam Bedell as authority would permit. The life of Bishop Elliott is another tale worth telling by a competent historian. I am glad that Dr. Gamble's Life of \Villiam Bedell is to be published, and I trust that it will bring inspir­ ation to many readers.

Afler a brief examination of poetry, prose, art and music, we discuss and analyse the word heart in its universal applicability within different religions, eras, cultures and creeds. Our particular focus is then centred in Sacred Scripture where we find the most comprehensive understanding of the word heart. Tracing the depth and richness of its meaning throughout the Scripture texts, we are faced with the human paradox of good and evil, both of which proceed from the mysterious realm of the heart where freedom and grace engage us in ways that are at times beyond our comprehension. Examining the place of the desert in the process of forming the heart - which we understand to be the vital, inner core of a person - we highlight the struggle involved in this process, suggesting as the desert Fathers have before us, that the heart itself is at times a battlefield.

    The Archaeology of the Abbeys and Priories of Leicestershire by Peter Liddle with Lorna O'Brien The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the present state of knowledge of the archaeology of the greater religious houses of Medieval Leicestershire. Secular colleges, hospitals, the military orders, friaries and alien cells are not included. Neither is the impact of the sites on the landscape through their creation of granges etc. covered (for this, see Courtney 1981). The documentary background is only covered in outline. For a fuller account see R A McKinley's article in the Victoria County History of Leicestershire (McKinley 1954). The earliest known monastic house was founded at Breedon in c.675AD within the ramparts of the Iron Age hill fort (Dornier 1977). Nothing is known of its buildings except for the magnificent carvings built into the later church. It seems certain that there were other similar communities at this time. Bringhurst seems likely, while sites producing a range of Middle/Late Anglo-Saxon objects at, for instance, Wymeswold and Melton Mowbray may well prove to be monastic (Liddle, forthcoming). DERR THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERISTY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: DR. THOMAS O’CONNOR NOVEMBER 2013 Abstract This study explores, reconstructs and evaluates the social, political, educational and economic worlds of the Irish Catholic episcopal corps appointed between 1657 and 1829 by creating a prosopographical profile of this episcopal cohort. The central aim of this study is to reconstruct the profile of this episcopate to serve as a context to evaluate the ‘achievements’ of the four episcopal generations that emerged: 1657-1684; 1685- 1766; 1767-1800 and 1801-1829. The first generation of Irish bishops were largely influenced by the complex political and religious situation of Ireland following the Cromwellian wars and Interregnum. This episcopal cohort sought greater engagement with the restored Stuart Court while at the same time solidified their links with continental agencies. With the accession of James II (1685), a new generation of bishops emerged characterised by their loyalty to the Stuart Court and, following his exile and the enactment of new penal legislation, their ability to endure political and economic marginalisation. Through the creation of a prosopographical database, this study has nuanced and reconstructed the historical profile of the Jacobite episcopal corps and has shown that the Irish episcopate under the penal regime was not only relatively well-organised but was well-engaged in reforming the Irish church, albeit with limited resources. By the mid-eighteenth century, the post-Jacobite generation (1767-1800) emerged and were characterised by their re-organisation of the Irish Church, most notably the establishment of a domestic seminary system and the setting up and manning of a national parochial system.

    ARCHJEOLOGY IN LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND 1967-1968 Report from Leicester Museums and Art Gallery This Report covers the year ending 31 March 1968. Smaller casual finds, which are listed in the Annual Reports of the Museums and Art Gallery, are not included. The Report has been compiled by J. F. L. Norwood, Keeper of Antiquities, with the assistance of the staff of the Department of Antiquities, and acknowledgement is made to them and other contributors and sources as appropriate. LEICESTER AYLESTONE ROAD. 585027 The redevelopment of Freemen's Common continued. Two cottages at the comer of Aylestone Road and Raw Dykes Road, erected to house the Overseers, were demolished. A stone commemorative plaque of 1805 and a centenary slate plaque of 1905 were saved from the cottages and are to be re-sited at a suitable opportunity. BATH LANE. 58080453 The old Public Baths, opened in 1879, and used as offices in recent years by S. Russell & Sons Ltd., were demolished in December. Excavations by the Museum on the site revealed traces of an apsidal Roman building, probably a bath, the walls and floor of which had been robbed. Underneath were traces of a building of different plan, at least 12 ft. x 25 ft., and below this the beam slots and post holes of a timber structure. With this was associated a hearth (perhaps industrial) and quantities of bone ash. (Records and finds in Leic. Mus.) 20 CHECKETTS CLOSE, A small bronze coin of Constantine I was found by Mr. G . F. Seager. GARTREE ROAD. Detailed examination of the evidence for the Roman Road leaving Leicester along an approximate SE alignment, and usually referred to as the Gartree Road, has taken place over the past three seasons (1965-7).

This book cannot be expected to please everybody, and it makes no attempt to conciliate those who prefer sentiment to truth, or who allow their reading of historical events to be distorted by present-day controversies, whether ecclesiastical or political. In that respect it tries to live up to the dictum of Samuel Butler that 'he excels most who hits the golden mean most exactly in the middle'.
