Her father was a railroad attorney, and the family moved around while Amelia was a child. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Spadina Military Hospital in Toronto, Canada, during World War I, and then enrolled as a premedical student at Columbia University in New York. However, her parents then insisted that she move to California where they were living. In California she started taking flying lessons in 1921. With the help of her sister Muriel and her mother, Amy Otis Earhart, she bought her first airplane, a second-hand Kinner Airster, in 1922. After her parents’ divorce, Amelia moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where in 1928 she was selected by her future husband, the publisher George Palmer Putnam, to be the first female passenger on a transatlantic flight. -

The aircraft struck the ground 1.25 miles east of the airport and destroyed several homes, automobiles, and other property. me aircraft's occupants--three crew- members--and six persons on the ground were killed. Two others were injured slight- ly. The aircraft was destroyed by impact and fire. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the-probable cause of this accident was overrotation of the aircraft at lift-off resulting in flight in th aerodynamic region of reversed comnd, near the stall regime, and at too low an altitude to effect recovery. The reason for the aircraft's entering this adverse flight condition could not be determined. Factors which may have contributed to the accident include: (a) Improper cargo loading, (b) a rearward mvement of unsecured cargo resulting in a center of gravity shift aft of the allowable limit, and (c) deficient crew coordination. As the result of this accident, the Safety Board has made several reconmenda- tions to the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. -

First Wright brothers’ airplane patent, based on their 1902 glider, is filed in America. Aug. 8, 1903. The Langley gasoline engine model airplane is successfully launched from a catapult on a houseboat. Dec. 8, 1903. Second and last trial of the Langley airplane, piloted by Charles M. Manly, is wrecked in launching from a houseboat on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Dec. 17, 1903. At Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville Wright flies for about 12 seconds over a distance of 120 feet, achieving the world’s first manned, powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. The Wright brothers made four flights that day. On the last, Wilbur Wright flew for 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. (Three days earlier, Wilbur Wright had attempted the first powered flight, managing to cover 105 feet in 3.5 seconds, but he could not sustain or control the flight and crashed.) Preface ommercial aviation recently celebrated its first centennial. Over the more than 100 years since the first Ctake off, aviation has witnessed challenges and changes that have made it a critical component of mod- ern societies. Most importantly, air transport brings humans closer together, promoting peace and harmo- ny through connectivity and social exchange. A key role for Hermes Air Transport Organisation is to contribute to the development, progress and promo- tion of air transport at the global level. This would not be possible without knowing the history and evolu- tion of the industry. Once a luxury service, affordable to only a few, aviation has evolved to become accessible to billions of peo- ple. But how did this evolution occur? This book provides an updated timeline of the key moments of air transport. It is based on the first aviation history book Hermes published in 2014 in partnership with ICAO, ACI, CANSO & IATA. I would like to express my appreciation to Professor Martin Dresner, Chair of the Hermes Report Committee, for his important role in editing the contents of the book. I would also like to thank Hermes members and partners who have helped to make Hermes a key organisa- tion in the air transport field. -

Over 1,550 Hercules (C-130s Vol. 6, No. 3, July. September 1979 and L-100) have been delivered to 44 countries. We at Lockheed are very proud of this Contents: record and the reputation the Hercules has earned. It is a reputation built on depend- ability, versatility, and durability. 2 Focal Point The Hercules is a true workhorse. Many developing countries depend on it to carry all types of cargo, from lifesaving food to road-building equipment. They carry these cargoes to remote areas that are not easily accessible by any other mode of transporta- 3 tion. An additional advantage is its ability to land and take off in incredibly short 3 Crew Door Rigging distances, even on unpaved clearings. The tasks the Hercules is capable of accomplishing are almost limitless; from hunting hurricanes, to flying mercy relief missions. It is the universal airborne platform.
