Dear Texas Longhorn Friends, Who would have imagined 30 years ago that we would be here today celebrating Texas Longhorns at the RM? We have seen it all at our sales and parties-floods and drought, steamy hot days and freak, wind-blown cold fronts. You never know what will happen with Texas weather in the spring. What we do know is that our focus has always been on having great people and outstanding cattle with a good time had by all. We appreciate your roll in the sale, whether you are a consignor, a buyer or just a visitor. In our last sale catalog we told you that we had added some impressive and exceptional cattle to the herd and we invited people to tour the ranch and see them for themselves. The ranch is open to our visitors and you may pick up a map at the ranch office if you would like to look at our cattle while you are here. We are excited to have made arrangements to use the great Butler bull Desperado, owned by Loeffler Ranches, for the 2008 breeding season. We started acquiring some straight Butler cattle in 2001 and have dedicated ourselves to breeding a small but top notch herd of Butler cattle since that time. Today we have approximately 60 Butler females and many of them are sired by such great Butler bulls that we have used as Coach, Double Droopy (a full- brother to VJ Tommie), Leonidas and Windstar. This will be the first breeding season that we have concentrated our efforts toward breeding most of our Butler cows to one bull, Desperado. We are delighted with our battery of young bulls, so much so that we have dedicated the cover of this catalog to them! You will see in the sale offering some special RM cattle bred to these great bulls and we know you will take home some cattle that will be exceptional as they mature and that will make you money. Super Bowl is bred to several lots in the sale. He has gained the reputation of siring exceptional early horn growth and has more over 70” sons than any other bull in the business. Smart buyers will invest in cows bred to Super Bowl. Touchdown of RM is a Super Bowl son we Super Bowl raised and he currently is being bred to many of our best cows. He has done every- thing we have hoped for and his daughters are starting to create a lot of attention in the sale ring. At our October sale two of them brought over $20,000. We do not anticipate offering very many cows bred to him in the future at auction. We recommend you take a good look at what he is bred to in this sale. MC Super Rex is another Super Bowl son that we are using heavily. His first calves were born in October. We are very impressed with the muscle and uniformity we are getting with him. RM King Midas is a straight Butler son of Coach. His dam is out of our best cow family. We have one calf crop out of him and expect great things from him. BH Butler Shi-Zam is a straight Butler Dark Star Chex son we bought from Buck and Sharon Adams. His first calves have been spectacularly col- ored and we believe he will be an important part of our Butler program. We will be using a young bull we own in partnership with Hudson Longhorns this year. Ring of Fire is a JM Sue son out of a cow we bought from Hudson, Mellow Yellow. He will be bred to some of our top 2006 heifers this year. We are very grateful for our 30 years of fun and profit with these cattle. We invite each of you to come to the sale, bring your friends and associates and be a part of the Texas Longhorn weekend here at the ranch. We have experi- enced a growing interest in people who want to consign to this sale. In order to consign we have in the past asked that you be a buyer at one of our last three sales. It seems that we have a larger group who want to consign after each sale. This year we had to turn down a number of you who wanted to consign. Consignors to our 2009 sale will first be selected from the buyers at this sale. If there are any slots left open we will then offer them to the buyers at our two sales in 2007. We want to thank each of you for helping make our sale a success. We are pleased to once again have the Almost Patsy Cline Band perform at the party. SLURRED SPEECH: HOW THE NLRB TOLERATES RACISM By Michael H. LeRoy∗ Racist speech in union representation elections is widespread and conflicts with the protections of Title VII for diverse employees across different industries. These messages contain slurs, promote white supremacy, and incite fears of legal favoritism for Blacks. Some besmirch Jews, Latinos, Japanese, and Mormons. The rise of white nationalism motivates my empirical study of racist speech in union representation elections. My database consists of fifty-one National Labor Relations Board cases and twenty-nine appellate court rulings on racially divisive campaign speech. In addition, the Article examines NLRB cases involving picketing employees who voice racial slurs to minority workers who cross their line. The fact findings show that the NLRB tolerates almost all slurs and incitements. The Board’s permissive policy conflicts with Title VII’s standard for racial harassment under Harris v. Forklift Systems, Inc. This Article suggests that in cases where racist speech is an issue, the NLRB should use Title VII’s standard for a hostile work environment. Without making this policy change, the National Labor Relations Act opens the door for white nationalists to promote racial preference and re-segregation in the workplace. ∗ Michael H. LeRoy is a professor in the School of Labor and Employment Relations and the College of Law at University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign. B.A., M.A. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; J.D. University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. The author owes a special debt of gratitude to Zachary M. Johns of Morgan, Lewis, & Bockius LLP (Philadelphia), who helped to clarify his analysis.

  • The Music of Louisiana: Cajuns, Creoles and Zydeco
The Music of Louisiana: Cajuns, Creoles and Zydeco Carole Poindexter-Sylvers INTRODUCTION The music and cuisine of southern Louisiana experienced a renaissance during the 1980s. Zydeco musicians and recording artists made appearances on morning talk shows, Cajun and Creole restaurants began to spring up across the nation, and celebrity chefs such Paul Prudhomme served as a catalyst for the surge in interest. What was once unknown by the majority of Americans and marginalized within the non-French speaking community in Louisiana had now become a national trend. The Acadians, originally from Acadia, Nova Scotia, were expelled from Canada and gradually became known as Cajuns. These Acadians or Cajuns proudly began teaching the lingua franca in their francophone communities as Cajun French, published children‘s books in Cajun French and school curricula in Cajun French. Courses were offered at local universities in Cajun studies and Cajun professors published scholarly works about Cajuns. Essentially, the once marginalized peasants had become legitimized. Cajuns as a people, as a culture, and as a discipline were deemed worthy of academic study stimulating even more interest. The Creoles of color (referring to light-skinned, French-speaking Negroid people born in Louisiana or the French West Indies), on the other hand, were not acknowledged to the same degree as the Cajuns for their autonomy. It would probably be safe to assume that many people outside of the state of Louisiana do not know that there is a difference between Cajuns and Creoles – that they are a homogeneous ethnic or cultural group. Creoles of color and Louisiana Afro-Francophones have been lumped together with African American culture and folkways or southern folk culture.

  • The Social Life of Slurs
The Social Life of Slurs Geoff Nunberg School of Information, UC Berkeley Jan. 22, 2016 To appear in Daniel Fogal, Daniel Harris, and Matt Moss (eds.) (2017): New Work on Speech Acts (Oxford, UK: Oxford University Press). Chaque mot a son histoire. —Jules Gilliéron A Philological Caution The Emergence of Slurs We wear two hats when we talk about slurs, as engaged citizens and as scholars of language. The words had very little theoretical interest for philosophy or linguistic semantics before they took on a symbolic role in the culture wars that broke out in and around the academy in the 1980s.1 But once scholars’ attention was drawn to the topic, they began to discern connections to familiar problems in meta-ethics, semantics, and the philosophy of language. The apparent dual nature of the words—they seem both to describe and to evaluate or express— seemed to make them an excellent test bed for investigations of non-truth-conditional aspects of meaning, of certain types of moral language, of Fregean “coloring,” and of hybrid or “thick” terms, among other things. There are some writers who take slurs purely as a topical jumping-off point for addressing those issues and don’t make any explicit effort to bring their discussions back to the social questions that drew scholars’ attention to the words in the first place. But most seem to feel that their research ought to have some significance beyond the confines of the common room. That double perspective can leave us a little wall-eyed, as we try to track slurs as both a social and linguistic phenomenon.

This thesis aims to explore the creation of an automated system to identify tweets and tweeters, and at the same time gain a theoretical understanding of the tweets. To do this a mixed methods approach was employed: ma- chine learning was utilised to identify racist tweets and tweeters, and grounded theory and other qualitative techniques were used to gain an understanding of the tweets’ content.
