Kulttuuriperinnön tutkimus Tammikuu 2014 Tutkimus tarkastelee kulttuuriperinnön asemaa perheyrityksen yrityskulttuurin, identiteetin ja yrityskuvan osatekijänä ja sitä, miten historiatietoisuus ohjaa yri- tyksen toimintaa paikallisen vaikuttavuuden näkökulmasta. Samalla tutkimus selvittää, miten liiketoiminnan laajeneminen ja globalisoituminen vaikuttavat paikallistason toimintaan ja miten yritys käyttää kulttuuriperintöään muutosten hallinnassa. Tutkimus on historiallinen tapaustutkimus. Esimerkkitapauksena on A. Ahl- ström Osakeyhtiö ja Länsi-Suomessa sijaitseva Noormarkun ruukki, joka on ol- lut yrityksen omistuksessa 1870-luvulta lähtien. 1800-luvun lopusta 2000-luvulle ulottuva tutkimus perustuu pääasiassa arkistolähteisiin. Tutkimuksessa yhdisty- vät kulttuuriperinnön ja liiketaloustieteen tutkimuksen sekä historiantutkimuk- sen lähestymistavat. Paikallistason toiminnan tarkastelussa tutkimus saa piirteitä myös tehdasyhdyskuntatutkimuksesta. Tutkimuksessa perheyrityksen kulttuuriperintöön sisällytetään aineellisen kulttuuriperinnön ja menneisyyden kuvausten lisäksi yrityksen jatkuvuuteen, omistajuuteen, kotipaikkaan ja yhteiskuntavastuuseen liittyvät perinteet. Tutki- mus osoittaa, että historia ja perinteet voivat olla yritykselle voimavara mutta myös hidaste. Perheyhtiön traditio on kestänyt liiketoiminnallisista ja organisa- torisista muutoksista huolimatta. Suvun rooli yhtiön sisällä on kuitenkin muut- tunut. Perhejohtajuudesta on siirrytty sukuomistukseen. Ahlström on tyyppiesimerkki siitä, miten yritykset korostavat historian avul- la toimintansa jatkuvuutta, luotettavuutta, uskottavuutta ja innovatiivisuutta. Yritys on rakentanut historiallista yrityskuvaansa muun muassa museoiden, näyttelyiden ja julkaisujen avulla. Yrityksen suhde historialliseen kotipaikkaansa, Noormarkkuun, on ollut poikkeuksellisen kiinteä. Noormarkun ruukki on esi- merkki siitä, miten yrityksen menneisyyteen liittyvistä paikoista voi muodostua symbolisia muistin paikkoja. Historiatietoisuus synnyttää ja ylläpitää paikallisvastuuta, joka on ilmennyt eri aikakausina eri tavoin. Ruukin toimintoja on kehitetty, kun vanhat toimin- not ovat päättyneet. 2000-luvulla yritys hyödyntää kulttuuriperintöään liiketoi- minnan resurssina, paikallisen liiketoiminnan ja matkailun kehittämisen lähtö- kohdista. 5 Kansainvälisissä tutkimuksissa historian aktiivista käyttöä yrityksen strategi- sessa suunnittelussa kuvataan käsitteellä history management. Suomessa aihetta on toistaiseksi tutkittu vähän. Tutkimus on siten avaus yrityksiä kulttuuriperin- nön säilyttäjinä ja käyttäjinä koskeville keskusteluille. Ahlström Corporation in Noormarkku Doctoral dissertation, 299 pages Cultural Heritage Studies January 2014 The study investigates the role of cultural heritage in corporate culture, identity and image of a family business, as well as the way in which historical conscious- ness affects the company’s actions on the local level. At the same time, the study examines how globalization and expansion affect local operations and how the company utilizes its cultural heritage in the management of changes. As a historical case study, the dissertation examines the A. Ahlström Corpor- ation and the Noormarkku ironworks in Western Finland that has belonged to the company since the 1870s. The period of study, which spans from the end of the nineteenth century to the twenty-first century, is mainly based on historic- al records. The study combines approaches of cultural heritage studies, history stud ies and business studies. In the investigation of local events, the research adopts elements from the study of factory communities Besides the historical sites and descriptions of the past, the study considers the traditions that are connected with the continuity, ownership, domicile and social responsibility of the company as parts of cultural heritage. It shows that history and traditions can be valuable assets for a company, but may also be a hindrance. Despite organizational and business changes, the tradition of the family business has endured. Nevertheless, the role of the family has changed – from family management into family ownership. Ahlström is a typical example of the way in which companies use history to highlight their continuity, reliability, credibility and innovations. The com- pany has utilized museums, exhibitions and publications, among others, in the construction of its historical corporate image. The ties between the company and its historical domicile, Noormarkku, have been exceptionally close. The Noor- markku ironworks is an example of how places connected with a company’s past can become symbolic memorial sites. Historical consciousness creates and maintains a sense of local responsibility, seen in various forms throughout the times. The operations at the ironworks have evolved, as old functions have been ceased. In the twenty-first century, the company utilizes its cultural heritage as a business resource, developing local business and tourism. 7 In the international studies of business administration, the active use of his- tory in business activities and strategic planning is referred to as history man- agement. Thus far in Finland this is a topic seldom studied. Therefore this study is an attempt to open the discussion about companies’ utilization and management of cultural heritage. Tarvitaan selkeä päämäärä, oikea asenne, uskoa omiin ideoihin sekä intoa itsensä jatkuvaan kehittämiseen. Toiminnan tulee tuottaa myös tulosta. Väitöskirjan valmistuminen on tulos vuosia kestäneestä puurtamisesta. Toisaalta se on kuitenkin vain välivaihe orastavalla tieteellisellä uralla. Yritysmaailman ter- mejä käyttäen voisinkin todeta, että nyt on välitilinpäätöksen aika, jonka jälkeen on hyvä suunnata katse tulevaan. Samalla on aika kiittää kaikkia niitä tahoja, jotka ovat tukeneet ja kannustaneet minua tutkimukseni eri vaiheissa. Kiitän työni ohjaajia yliopistonlehtori Anna Sivulaa ja dosentti Simo Häyrys- tä.     PRESS RELEASE Free use Alvar Aalto’s Masterpiece – Villa Mairea a DVD Film Alvar Aalto’s Masterpiece – Villa Mairea is a sensitive documentary film written, filmed and directed by Rax Rinnekangas. Villa Mairea was the home of Maire and Harry Gullichsen, designed by Alvar Aalto and built in Noormarkku, the Ahlström ironworks estate in 1939. The narration for the film has been written by architect Juhani Pallasmaa, who is also the film’s narrator. He leads the viewer through the rooms of Villa Mairea, and helps in understanding the different levels of Aalto’s philosophy as well as the building itself, a building which has become one of the icons of modern architecture. The booklet accompanying the film includes two articles. In the first, architect Kristian Gullichsen writes about the ideal home to which he moved in 1939 when he was seven years old. The house has since become an uninhabited monument. At times, however, Villa Mairea awakes to the life of a family, the games and laughter of children or as a discussion forum and meeting place for international artists and architects. In the second article Juhani Pallasmaa delves deep into the philosophy of the house. Rax Rinnekangas is a director, photographer and author. He has published over 20 books: novels, short stories, essays and photography books. He has held over 40 private exhibitions in Finland and around the world and has received several awards. His central theme is man and the memory of the past. In his documentary Alvar Aalto’s Masterpiece – Villa Mairea the importance of light as one particular visual element is also strongly present.

Wif Stenger The exhibitions organised by the Artek gallery enjoy an almost iconic status in the field of Finnish art. These exhibitions were bold and ambitious. The idea behind them was to bring together modern art, industry, interior design and ‘propaganda’, by which was meant publishing activity. The exhibitions also left a lasting mark on Finnish art and on the Ateneum art collection. ‘Europe – its symbol could be […] an airplane above a cathedral. America – its symbol is an airplane above a skyscraper. In the latter picture, there is perfect harmony. In the first there is not. The former represents the present day. The latter, the future.’ 1 It was with these words that the writer Olavi Paavolainen, in his book Nykyaikaa etsimässä (In Search of Modern Time), published in 1929, expressed his generation’s desire to see the world through new eyes. Finnish artists were accustomed to finding inspiration broadly in European countries, primarily in France, Germany and Italy. Paavolainen had, in his dreams, travelled further afield, as far as New York and Chicago. Paavolainen’s book tackled three themes: the modern European lifestyle, new trends in art and the new image of humanity. Paavolainen wrote with great passion on behalf of modernity and against conservatism. He emphasised that in ‘developing a modern view of life’ one should pay attention to all the arts, meaning literature, the visual arts, theatre and music.

The chair lived upstairs my grandparents house. It was unsteady. It was difficult to climb to sit on it, and impossible to stand on. Adults forbade standing on the chair, and after an attempt even a four-year-old realised the stool was not meant for this purpose. Quite a few others have not been afraid of this chair, because Alvar Aalto ‘stool number 60’ has been sold in millions since it was first designed in 1933..’1 This is a description by a journalist in a Finnish interior magazine ‘Deko’, which leads me to the topic of this paper. This paper begins with two notions: First, it is suggested that an essential part of Alvar Aalto’s fame is rooted in furniture designs and the distribution of these via the Artek company, established in 1935. Second, the hypothesis is that so many Finns, far beyond architecture and design enthusiasts recognise Aalto’s name still today because the Artek furniture remains to be part of many peoples’ mundane, ’everyday life’. The motivation for focusing on Artek furnishings in buildings not by Aalto is on one hand to not tease apart Artek’s independent role, but on the other hand, because living in Finland, I have found myself only too often awakening to the realisation of being surrounded by Artek furniture in spaces as kindergartens, hospitals, governmental offices, and libraries.

The museum’s exhibition spaces will now meet the personal collection of the designer of the museum building together with close colleagues and their collections. What happens to a work of art when it is transferred from one context of interpretation, one environment, to another – from the artist’s studio to a gallery, and from there to a collector’s home and in turn to an art museum? How is the dialogue of the exhibition space, art and architecture formed? What happens to architecture when its navel is cut, when it distances itself from the visual arts that link to shared existentialist soil? What is collecting, and what is a collection? Is it something that is consciously constructed? Or did art just become part of life and did the art works find their way into the collector’s home? The concept of art produced by art history and maintained by museums has only grudgingly accepted references to private tastes in art.

    Aino Aalto: “A quietly flowing stream” Eva Brydson Finnish designer Aino Aalto (née Marsio, 1894-1949) is often a footnote in her husband, icon of modern architecture, Alvar Aalto’s biography. An article from the Finnish Design Shop states that Aino’s “...life’s work has been easy to ignore, for example, by naming her merely the muse of her husband, Alvar Aalto.”1 This unfortunate lack of attention to Aino’s individual career discounts the significant contributions that she made to modern Scandinavian design. Collaborative work played a major role during Aino’s relatively short career (ca.1920 until her untimely death in 1949), whether with Alvar or their collaborative design firm, Artek. The early, formative years of Aino’s life and education led to her prominent contributions with Alvar and Artek. A critical inspection of Aino’s notable pieces, along with comparisons of some works that have been attributed to her, Alvar, or them both, reveal the undeniable influences between the two partners. Finally, Aino’s place in history in light of Alvar’s status as a genius of Scandinavian design analyzes the couple’s personal professional partnerships. Aino was born in 1894 in Helsinki, Finland, where she lived throughout her primary and secondary education. Aino was educated at the Helsingin Suomalainen Tyttökoulu (Helsinki Finnish Girls' School), and graduated in 1913. As late as 1927, at a time when modernism was making bold advances in the centers of European culture, Alvar and Aino Aalto were designing neoclassical buildings and handcrafted furniture in an array of historical styles in Jyväskylä.1 A small city in the countryside of central Finland, Jyväskylä was far from Turku and Helsinki, the cultural centers of a country that was already on the periphery of European civilization. There was little out of the ordinary in the Aaltos’ work.2 It was com- petent, conventional in its style and appropriate for its place. Looking forward from this point in time, the prospect that a modern masterpiece would emerge from their office seemed unlikely, let alone inevitable.3 Yet, looking back from 1939, the year the Villa Mairea was completed, the trajectory seems clearer. In fact, by early 1938, Alvar Aalto’s exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York was announced in a press release: “The Exhibition of Furniture and Architecture by Alvar Aalto presents the first American survey of the work of the Finnish architect, who is recognized as one of the most important and original modern architects and furniture designers of the past
