1. Villa Mairea – A true gem of modernism

Villa Mairea, the most internationally renowned of the buildings in the area of Noormarkku Works, was completed in autumn 1939, just before the start of the Winter War, It was to serve as the home for formal entertainment for Maire (née Ahlström) and Harry Gullichsen, CEO of Ahlström Corporation at the time. This progressive and open-minded couple was interested in the simplicity and clarity of modernism. The building was designed by their friends, Alvar and Aino Aalto, who were given an opportunity for free and innovative design. Under these ideal circumstances a unique masterpiece was created, which is nowadays internationally recognized among the best pieces of 20th century architecture. Interiors of the house were designed by Aino Aalto. Villa Mairea served right from the beginning several roles: it was an establishment for entertaining formal guests and a home with children, it was the location for Maire Gullichsen’s impressive arts collection and a home of hospitality for their friends. The house has seen several parties with the top musicians and artists from Finland and abroad. Through Maire Gullichsen’s life-long devotion to art, Villa Mairea is connected to many Finnish establishments of art and design, including the furnishing business Artek and Galerie Artek, the Free Art School and Pori Art Museum, in whose foundation she had a decisive role. https://www.villamairea.fi/

2. Ahlström Voyage exhibition

The Ahlström Voyage exhibition displayed in an old iron smithy offers an interesting peek to the history of Ahlström companies and Finnish industrial history for almost 160 years. 10

The exhibition introduces, for example, art glass produced by Iittala, Karhula and Riihimäki glass factories, which all belonged to Ahlström companies. There is a number of unique pieces of the Savoy vase designed by Alvar Aalto, an impressive collection of Tapio Wirkkala's production and ‘Orchid’ by Timo Sarpaneva. A scale model of the Noormarkku Works area by Taina Pailos is located downstairs. It illustrates the size of the area and the relations between different buildings. At the exhibition, you can also see the different phases of the Ahlström family and the Finnish class system in the 19th and 20th centuries. On the special tour for Zonta International organization you will hear the stories of the strong women of Ahlström family starting from Mrs Eva Ahlström, a mother of seven and CEO of a big industrial company. https://www.ahlstrominruukit.fi/noormarkku/kulttuuri/ahlstrom-voyage

General information of Ahlström Works

According to Ahlström's core values, the company cherishes its great cultural history and traditions and takes care of the environment. Today this can be seen in the area of Ahlström Works in Noormarkku which is located 15 km from the city center of Pori. Ahlström Works at Noormarkku is a large industrial village with two historical industrial stablishments: old sawmill, now Makkarakoski Sawmill Museum (converted into a museum in 2014) and old iron smithy which is now the place for the Ahlstrom Voyage exhibition. The historical hydroelectric power station still produces pure green energy as it has done since 1896. Noormarkku Works is also the place for the homes of three Ahlström generations. These houses are Isotalo, Havulinna and the world-famous Villa Mairea. In addition, the old Head Office of the corporation is still in use, now serving as the head office for A. Ahlström Kiinteistöt Oy (the real estates). There are also wide parks and gardens, which can be seen on guided tours. Ahlström Services offer hotel accommodation, restaurant and meeting services. Services prefer local producers and the best seasonal ingredients. Noormarkku Club has been awarded the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs plaque as a sign of the high-quality food and service. The great stories of the life at the Noormarkku Works can be heard on the guided tours. https://www.ahlstrominruukit.fi/noormarkku https://www.ahlstrominruukit.fi/noormarkku/ravintola/ravintolapalvelut https://www.ahlstrominruukit.fi/noormarkku/kulttuuri/makkarakosken-saha
