Cambridgshire Memories of the Cold War era Our mission: to research, record and archive the local history of the Cold War era working with Cambridgeshire residents to tell our stories and commemorate 30 years since the Fall of The Berlin Wall. SpyNet is a National Heritage Lottery Funded project, led by New International Theatre Company. Thanks to partners The Norris Museum, Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust, Ramsey Youth Club (Crunch) and The Library Presents. Introduction The following texts are transcriptions of interviews from people who give a variety of personal perspectives on the Cold War. These are mainly from those serving professionally with RAF, USAFE, Civil Defence or the Intelligence services; but also included are the insights of a teenager growing up on a base, an artist who lived on the Soviet side of the Iron Curtain and the memories of people who protested at Molesworth. The memories begin in the '60s and cover the height of the Cold War in the '80s. The contributors all have a connection to Cambridgeshire, highlighting the importance of this period of history for the region. Today the activities have changed, USAFE U2 spy planes no longer fly from Alconbury and the RAF Nimrods no longer fly from Wyton, however cyber-espionage continues apace at undisclosed locations. The physical landscape is changing too with RAF Molesworth, Alconbury and Upwood all facing closure and re-purposing to housing development, but the memories stay with those who lived through a unique historical era. 1 2 contents 1. Edition 2.0 “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” Air Commodore-in-Chief Royal Air Force Regiment Her Majesty The Queen unveiled this portrait of herself, which now dominates the entrance hall, in 1967. The portrait depicts the Queen as Sovereign of the Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s premier Order of Chivalry. The portrait was commissioned by the Officers of the RAF Regiment to commemorate the Regiment’s 25th Anniversary and was executed by Huseph Riddle. Both at the unveiling and subsequently at the Royal Review of the RAF Regiment to commemorate the 40th Anniversary in 1982, The Queen expressed her particular satisfaction with the portrait. Gunner 2007 Although the significance of a 65th anniversary in military terms is not great, it was recognized in 2006 that the Corps should recognize yet another milestone in its short history in some way and the idea of a new and significant piece of silverware was developed. -

Since 2011, the Writing Program conducted travel-based exchanges in partnership with the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig in Leipzig, Germany; the Scuola Holden in Turin, Italy; the Institut Ramon Llull and Universitat Pompeu Fabra–IDEC in Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain); the Columbia Global Center | Middle East in Amman, Jordan; Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.; and the University of the Arts Helsinki in Helsinki, Finland. Starting in 2016, the Word for Word program expanded to include a collaborative translation workshop running parallel to the exchanges, in which Writing Program students, over the course of one semester, translate work by their partners at some of these same institutions – the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig and Scuola Holden–as well as some new ones: Université Paris 8 in Paris, France; New York University’s Creative Writing in Spanish MFA Program; and the Instituto Vera Cruz in São Paulo, Brazil. -

So könnte man meinen: Keine besonderen Vorkommnisse, ein Jahr des normalen Gedenkstättenbetriebes, in dem die alltäglichen Aufgaben einer Gedenkstätte mit etwas mehr Ruhe erledigt werden können. Die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter der Stiftung schreiben das Jahr aber durchaus anders, denn tatsächlich begleiten immer wieder neue Herausforderungen den Arbeitsalltag. Noch nie kamen so viele Besucher in die Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer wie im Jahr 2012: Insgesamt kamen mehr als 700.000 Menschen in die beiden Häuser der Stiftung Berliner Mauer in der Bernauer Straße und nach Marienfelde. Die Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer gehört damit heute zu den meistbesuchten touristischen Orten in Berlin. Und auch immer mehr Berlinerinnen und Berliner nutzen das vielfältige Angebot von Führungen und Veranstaltungen. -

The Berlin Blockade and Airlift a Chronology June 11, 1948- All Allied and German railroad freight traffic between the Western zones and Berlin were suspended by the Soviets for two days. June 12, 1948- Resumption of railroad traffic, Autobahn traffic near Magdeburg via the Elbe Bridge is blocked to traffic by Soviets, allegedly for repair work. June 15, 1948- Russian issues new regulations for interzonal passenger traffic June 16, 1948- Soviets walk out of Allied Kommandatura meeting, Berlin. June 18, 1948- Currency reform for Western sector of Berlin announced, Russians protest and refuse to join scheme. June 22, 1948- Big Four Conference in Berlin failed to produce an agreement. Soviet Union announced their own separate currency reform. June 23, 1948- Berlin City Council members abused and manhandled outside City Hall after supporting Western currency reform measures. June 24, 1948- Soviets halt all freight, passenger and water traffic to Berlin. - Soviets were served notice they will not supply food to the Western sector of Berlin. The first RAF aircraft arrive in Wunstorf, in the British sector, beginning of the Airlift operations. June 26, 1948- AIRLIFT BEGINS 32 flights of C 47 transport 80 tons of supplies from Wiesbaden AB to Tempelhof. The US Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) had only approximately 100 C-47 aircraft available. June 28, 1948- First 35 C-54 en route from Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean to join Airlift operations. Brigadier General Joseph Smith, Commander of the Wiesbaden Military Posts, was given the command of the Berlin Airlift by LTG Curtis LeMay (USAFE CG). The RAF begins Operation "Knicker". -

Freudenberg, Winfried – letztes Maueropfer geboren am 29. August 1956 tödlich verunglückt am 8. März 1989 beim Absturz mit einem Bal- lon in Berlin-Zehlendorf nach einem Flug über die Sekto- rengrenze zwischen Berlin-Pankow und Berlin-Reinickendorf Winfried Freudenberg, geboren am 29. August 1956 in Osterwieck im Harz, wächst in der sächsisch-anhal- tinischen Gemeinde Lüttgenrode in unmittelbarer Nähe zur innerdeut- schen Grenze auf. Nach einer Elek- trikerlehre holt er in Abendkursen an der Kreis-Volkshochschule Halber- stadt sein Abitur nach, studiert Infor- mationstechnik in Ilmenau und schließt sein Studium als Diplom- Elektronikingenieur ab.[1] Während seiner Studienzeit lernt er die spätere Diplomchemikerin Sabine W. in ei- nem Studentenklub kennen. Im Herbst 1988 heiratet das junge Paar, doch sie sehen für sich keine berufli- chen Perspektiven in der DDR. Sie wollen nicht länger hinnehmen, dass ihnen vom Staat "Reisen, Tagungen, Forschungsmöglichkeiten und Kon- takte zu Menschen in westlichen Ländern" vorenthalten werden, wie Sabine Freudenberg später erzählt. Im Grenzgebiet wohnend, direkt am Stacheldraht, "ein paar hundert Meter von einem Land entfernt, das er nie betreten durfte", habe sich der Freiheitsdrang ihres Mannes besonders ausgeprägt.[2] Bei einem Verwandtenbesuch in der Bundesrepublik, zwei Wochen vor seiner Hochzeit, zeigt Win- fried Freudenberg sich entschlossen, die DDR zu verlassen, jedoch nicht ohne seine Frau.[3] Unmit- telbar nach der Hochzeit planen die beiden ihre Flucht mit einem Gasballon. Um an das nötige Erd- gas zu gelangen, nimmt Winfried Freudenberg eine Arbeitsstelle beim Energiekombinat im Bereich Gasversorgung an und bezieht mit seiner Frau eine Wohnung im Ost-Berliner Stadtteil Prenzlauer Berg. In unauffälligen Kleinmengen kauft das Ehepaar Polyäthylenfolien, wie sie für Frühbeetfens- ter und Zelte Verwendung finden. -

At ILA 2016 over 200 aircraft participated either in the static display and/or the flying programme, including this Polish Air Force MiG-29 (pictured left) making a dramatic start to its incredible flying display. There Had Been an RAF Communications Squadron in Germany Since 1944
8 Pembroke-Andover Era 1969 - 77 There had been an RAF communications squadron in Germany since 1944. In preparation for the invasion of France a unit had been formed in July 1943 at what is now Blackbushe Airport but was then known as RAF Hartford Bridge. Initially called the 2nd Tactical Air Force Communications Flight, it transferred to RAF Northolt in April 1944, then followed the invading forces, operating in France, Belgium and eventually Germany, establishing itself at RAF Buckeberg in May 1945, where it was to remain for almost ten years. ‘Communications’, in this context, are nothing to do with radios or telephones. A ‘communications squadron’ is the RAF’s term for a light transport unit, with duties such as VIP air taxi and those passenger and freight tasks which do not justify larger transport aircraft. Typical examples might be medical evacuation and small but urgent packages. The role and organisation of the RAF in Germany changed as the political and military situation changed. Immediately after the war the British military force in Germany was, inevitably, an army of occupation. German civilian administration had largely either been destroyed or had broken down. Even elementary necessities of life such as housing and electricity had to be organised by the Allied military. As an example, until 1949, it was the British Army which was running the Volkswagen car factory which produced the Beetle at Wolfsburg. For the RAF, this situation was reflected in the change of name from 2 TAF to the British Air Forces of Occupation (BAFO) in July 1945. -
Brian Patchett Was My Contemporary

Of more than passing interest is that Brian Patchett was my contemporary. (Please note that for very long pieces such as this, we only lightly proofread.) Ed. Sergeant Brian Patchett and Other Wall-Crossers by Paul Croxson, 2015 On July 6 1963, the East German News Agency, A.N.D, announced the defection of Brian Patchett stating that ‘he had been working on the monitoring of East German and Soviet radio communications’. This was partly untrue as no German communications were being monitored at Gatow and he couldn’t speak German. He had, however, seemingly defected. In 1953, No. 1 Wireless Regt., then based in Münster, set up a detachment manned by Intelligence Corps Voice Ops in Berlin known as Royal Signals Detachment, RAF Gatow. As was nearly always the case, no public mention of the Intelligence Corps contingent there was made. It was based at Gatow Airport, originally opened by Goering in 1936 as the Deutsche Verjehrsflugschule (DVS) – German Civil Aviation Pilots’ Training School) a covert organisation for training pilots for the Luftwaffe. Geoffrey Elliott, who also served there, in his book Secret Classrooms1 describes the camp and life, ‘The detachment was housed in an anonymous building on the road that ran through the pine trees along the northern perimeter of the airfield. The buildings had survived the flattening of Berlin surprisingly well, the only signs of damage being the heads and swastikas ruthlessly hammered off the eagles which still remained, set in stone on the Kaserne walls.
