National Party of Australia - NSW That the Central Executive: 1 (a) Note that in the 1970s the Central Council of the Party (then named the Australian Country Party (NSW)) ruled that membership of the far right Australian League of Rights is incompatible with Membership of this Party; (b) Rule that involvement in the Lads Society, Squadron 88, The Dingoes, New Guard or Antipodean Resistance is incompatible with membership of the National Party of Australia – NSW; 2 Note that the Constitution & Ethics Committee received the following reference from the State Director (after he had received various complaints and correspondence), viz: That the Constitution & Ethics Committee investigate and report upon indications that the National Party of Australia – NSW and the Young National Party of Australia – NSW have been infiltrated by far right extremists, and related matters; 3. Note that the State Director lodged a complaint under Rule 7.4.2 in relation to the general behaviour or writings of each of the Members listed on Annexure A which have been such as to: (i) bring or attempt to bring discredit or undue embarrassment to the Party (Rule 7.4.2, National Party of Australia – NSW Constitution & Rules), (ii) offends the following statement in “We Believe” (the Preamble to the Constitution & Rules): We believe Australians, as individuals and as a nation, must be prepared to oppose social and political ideas that threaten freedom and democracy in Australia and throughout the world; and (iii) offends the similarly worded provision in paragraph 2 of the Preamble to the Party’s Code of Conduct and Ethics; 4. Note that since the Constitution & Ethics Committee commenced its investigation into these matters, 19 members have resigned from the Party; and 5. Adopt the following recommendation: That the State Director write to each of the members on Annexure A who have not resigned to advise them of the above complaints and request each of them to: (a) either resign from the Party within seven (7) days; or, (b) within seven (7) days show cause why their membership should not be cancelled (Rule 7.4.1); and, further, that (c) the State Director inform each of those Members that if they do not resign or show cause within those seven (7) days, their membership shall be cancelled forthwith. 6. Adopt the following recommendation: Require that any future membership application from any of those listed on Annexure A be refused. (Rule 7.4.1). Adopted 2 Nov 2018 .

Georges Sorel. _______________________ This Thesis was conceived under singular circumstances. The author was in custody, convicted of offences arising from a 1989 shotgun attack upon the home of Eddie Funde, Representative to Australia of the African National Congress. On October 6 1994, I appeared for Sentence on another charge in the District Court at Parramatta. I had been convicted of participation in an unsuccessful attempt to damage a vehicle belonging to a neo-nazi informer. My Thesis -proposal was tendered as evidence of my prospects for rehabilitation and I was cross-examined about that document. The Judge (whose Sentence was inconsequential) said: … Mr Saleam said in evidence that his doctorate [sic] of philosophy will engage his attention for the foreseeable future; that he has no intention of using these exertions to incite violence.1 I pondered how it was possible to use a Thesis to incite violence. This exercise in courtroom dialectics suggested that my thoughts, a product of my experiences in right-wing politics, were considered acts of subversion. I concluded that the Extreme Right was ‘The Other Radicalism’, understood by State agents as odorous as yesteryear’s Communist Party. My interest in Extreme Right politics derived from a quarter-century involvement therein, at different levels of participation.

Antipodean Imperialist: Sir John Latham, a Political Biography, 1902 to 1934 Michael Kilmister BA(Hons)(Newcastle) A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History August 2018 This thesis was supported by an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship Abstract This dissertation examines Sir John Latham’s imperial ideology from the turn of the twentieth century, and traces how it shaped his political outlook and actions in the course of his parliamentary career, 1922-1934. Latham emerged as a very important political figure at a pivotal period for Australia and the British Empire. In response to emergent national sentiment in Australia and other settler societies before the First World War and after, British policymakers and intellectuals developed an overarching ideology that recast the British Empire as an interdependent yet loosely organised Commonwealth. Latham worked to translate and cement this liberal imperial worldview for Australian politics and diplomacy, lending it a conservative inflection in the process. Drawing on overlooked archival material, this thesis demonstrates that he developed and tested his antipodean pro-British imperialism in the exclusive meeting places of like-minded conservatives and applied its core tenets consistently in the making of national and imperial policy. Even though the British Empire rarely demonstrated the cohesion Latham desired, he remained committed to its causes. This dissertation retrieves Latham from a nationalist narrative, revealing that he pursued national interests within a British imperial framework. By re-establishing the all- encompassing importance of the British Empire to his political behaviour, I argue pro-British imperialism permeated the positions Latham took on domestic politics and international issues, notably the Australian Eastern Mission (1934).

PERSPECTIVES ON TERRORISM Volume 13, Issue 2 A “Lunatic Fringe”? The Persistence of Right Wing Extremism in Australia by Kristy Campion Abstract Right Wing Extremism (RWE) in Australia is historically persistent and contemporarily well-established. The persistence is not simply the consequence of an Australian-centric white nationalism, but is the result of international and domestic exchanges. This article investigates the persistence and appeal of Australian RWE groups. The first movements emerged in the 1930s against Bolshevik Communism, and quickly established ties with fellow travellers elsewhere in the Western world. While their influence diminished, their sentiment persisted in subcultural networks which also demonstrated international ties. RWE resurged in the 1980s, seeking to stymie pluralism and immigration. Some extremists travelled overseas, and formed connections with international counterparts. Their activities were suppressed by law enforcement, but the sentiment continues to survive in subcultural networks. RWE resurfaced in the decade prior to the 2019 Christchurch attack, largely targeting ethnic Australians and members of the Muslim community. Currently, the RWE threat in Australia is inherently tied to extremist attitudes regarding jihadism, Muslims, and immigration. Keywords: Australia, right wing extremism, terrorism, fascism, nationalism, Christchurch Introduction Right Wing Extremism (RWE) in Australia has demonstrated persistence over the past ninety years, despite its relatively peripheral position on the greater political spectrum. The Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) once placed the extreme right on the “lunatic fringe,” which maintained its relevance by public and provocative acts.[1] Notwithstanding this conceptual positioning, the extreme right in Australia has also demonstrated an ability to engage in meaningful international exchange with counterparts elsewhere in the Western world.

He is author of The Pyjama Girl Mystery: A True Story of Murder, Obsession and Lies, published by Scribe in 2004, and his areas of interest include the history of crime and policing, and the social and political effects of disasters. He is currently a Research Fellow at Swinburne University of Technology; this article was written with the support of the history program at La Trobe University. In 1931 and 1932, New South Wales faced civic collapse. During the last months of the Lang government, the semi-fascist New Guard became a serious threat to the state. This article examines the challenge posed by the New Guard to the New South Wales police, and the strategies used by the police to suppress the group. Superintendent W.J. MacKay, the colourful and Machiavellian future commissioner, effectively and ruthlessly exercised police power against the New Guard. This article disputes the dominant historical interpretation of this period, which sees the police as collaborators with a reactionary secret army, the ‘Old Guard’.
