In view of present world conditions and related adjustments of Foundation program, the President's Review will not appear until early in 1952. Brief public announcements of new appropriations by the Foundation are issued every three months. The following pages give a complete record of appro- priations for the year 1950. Descriptions of the projects for which the grants were made are grouped under the several divisional programs. Total appropriations made by The Rockefeller Foundation in 1950 amounted to $11,247,964. The bulk of these funds went for support to projects falling within the five main fields of Foundation activities roughly as follows: for public health, the natural sciences and the social sciences — about $2,000,000 each; for medical sciences and for the humanities — about $1,500,000 each. An additional $1,500,000 was absorbed by scientific services and general expenses coming under the head of adminis- tration. Exact figures are given in a statement on 2003 The Rockefeller Foundation 4 THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION page 23 of this Annual Report. Of the total made available for all divisions of work, 65 per cent was for activities in the United States and 35 per cent for activities in other countries. CHANGES IN THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES On April 5, 1950, The Hon. John Foster Dulles, who has been a Trustee of the Foundation since 1935, was elected Chairman of the Board to succeed Mr. Walter W. Stewart, who resigned as Chairman April 5, in advance of his retirement as a Trustee on De- cember 5, 1950. The Hon. Lewis W. Douglas was elected a Trustee December 5, to fill the vacancy left by Mr. Stewart. Mr. Douglas had previously been a Trustee from 1935 to 1947, when he became United States Ambassador to Great Britain. Mr. Geoffrey S. Smith, President of the Girard Trust Corn Exchange Bank, Philadelphia, Mr. William H. Claflin, Jr., of Boston, President of the Soledad Sugar Company, and The Hon.

At the White House in February, I joined President Bush and Mrs. Bush to launch the largest and most ambitious nationwide initiative in NEH’s history: Picturing America, the newest element of our We the People program. Through Picturing America, NEH is distributing forty reproductions of American art masterpieces to schools and public libraries nationwide—where they will help stu- dents of all ages connect with the people, places, events, and ideas that have shaped our country. The selected works of art represent a broad range of American history and artistic achieve- ment, including Emanuel Leutze’s painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware; Mary Cassatt’s The Boating Party; the Chrysler Building in New York City; Norman Rockwell’s iconic Freedom of Speech; and James Karales’s stunning photo of the Selma-to-Montgomery March for Voting Rights in 1965. Accompanying the reproductions are a teacher’s guide and a dynamic website with ideas for using the images in the study of American history, literature, civics, and other subjects. During the first round of applications for Picturing America awards in the spring of 2008, nearly one-fifth of all the schools and public libraries in America applied for the program. In the fall, the first Picturing America sets arrived at more than 26,000 institutions nationwide, and we opened a second application window for Picturing America awards that will be distributed in 2009.

    John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) Topic Guide for Chronicling America (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) Introduction John D. Rockefeller was an oil industry tycoon and philanthropist who lived in Cleveland, Ohio. Born in New York in 1839, he moved with his family to northeast Ohio in 1853. At age sixteen, he began his involvement with the business world as an assistant bookkeeper for a produce commission business. He soon began his own produce commission company before joining the oil refinery industry in 1863. He established Standard Oil of Ohio in 1870, and this is where he made most of his wealth. By 1878, the company controlled 90% of all U.S. oil refineries (it was declared a trust by the U.S government in 1911). In addition to his business interests, Rockefeller regularly donated a portion of his income to charities supporting education and public health. Rockefeller died in 1937 and is buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. He is widely recognized as the wealthiest American of all time. Important Dates . July 8, 1839: John Davison Rockefeller is born in Richford, New York. 1853: The Rockefeller family moves to Strongsville, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. 1863: Rockefeller and business partner Maurice B. Clark build an oil refinery in “The Flats” area of Cleveland. 1864: Rockefeller marries Laura Celestia “Cettie” Spelman. January 10, 1870: Standard Oil of Ohio is formed and grows rapidly over the next decade, eventually forming a monopoly. 1903: Rockefeller’s General Education Board is founded. 1911: U.S. Supreme Court declares that Standard Oil Company of New Jersey is a trust, and it is broken into subsidiaries.
