  • Gender Association with Stringed Instruments: a Four-Decade Analysis of Texas All-State Orchestras
Texas Music Education Research, 2012 V. D. Baker Edited by Mary Ellen Cavitt, Texas State University—San Marcos Gender Association with Stringed Instruments: A Four-Decade Analysis of Texas All-State Orchestras Vicki D. Baker Texas Woman’s University The violin, viola, cello, and double bass have fluctuated in both their gender acceptability and association through the centuries. This can partially be attributed to the historical background of women’s involvement in music. Both church and society rigidly enforced rules regarding women’s participation in instrumental music performance during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In the 1700s, Antonio Vivaldi established an all-female string orchestra and composed music for their performance. In the early 1800s, women were not allowed to perform in public and were severely limited in their musical training. Towards the end of the 19th century, it became more acceptable for women to study violin and cello, but they were forbidden to play in professional orchestras. Societal beliefs and conventions regarding the female body and allure were an additional obstacle to women as orchestral musicians, due to trepidation about their physiological strength and the view that some instruments were “unsightly for women to play, either because their presence interferes with men’s enjoyment of the female face or body, or because a playing position is judged to be indecorous” (Doubleday, 2008, p. 18). In Victorian England, female cellists were required to play in problematic “side-saddle” positions to prevent placing their instrument between opened legs (Cowling, 1983). The piano, harp, and guitar were deemed to be the only suitable feminine instruments in North America during the 19th Century in that they could be used to accompany ones singing and “required no facial exertions or body movements that interfered with the portrait of grace the lady musician was to emanate” (Tick, 1987, p.

In 1946, at the age of 17 when he was still called Hans Last, he was asked to join Hans-Guenther Oesterreich’s Radio Bremen Dance Orchestra as a double-bass player, along with his brothers Werner and Robert, and he played in the Last-Becker Ensemble. His brother Werner then launched his own career under the 1 pseudonym of Kai Warner, and his brother Robert Last was the first percussionist of the James-Last-Band. In 1955, James Last joined the Radio Orchestra of the Northern German radio station in Hamburg. In the early 1950s, he won several “Jazz Polls” as a jazz double bass player. In 1964, he was offered his own record deal with Polydor. This was the starting point of his instrumental music recordings with his orchestra James Last & His Orchestra, a big band with strings and choir added. Some of the music he composes himself and some of it he rearranges. His repertoire extends from swing to pop, but also includes folk songs and classical music. His 1965 album “Non Stop Dancing” marked the start of a unique career which made him one of the most successful musical artists in the world. Over the course of his career he has received numerous awards such as the “Country Music Award“, the “Platin Stimmgabel” and “Echo” for his life’s work and even including the Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande (Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany).

  • James Last Was, in 1975, One of the Most Popular Recording Artists
06007 5305679 ward the end. It’s easy to hear why Watts has always been Hollywood’s go-to man for romantic sax. “Summertime” is said to be one of Maestro Last’s favorite songs, and he’s often performed and recor- ded it, though more in the traditional James Last style than heard here. An edited version of “Summertime” was issued on 45 as an “A” side in Europe (Polydor POSP 45) and as a “B” side to “Love For Sale” in the United States (Polydor PD15108). I Can’t Move No Mountains – From the first Blood, Sweat & Tears album after founder David Clayton Thomas left the group, “New Blood” (1972), this song featured a jazzier sound, no doubt promp- ted by the jazz musicians in the band at the time, which lent itself well to the cover it gets here. The solos are by Larry Muhoberac on syn- thesizer and Larry Carlton on guitar. Love For Sale – Had Cole Porter lived through the disco age, he would have no doubt appreciated this take on one of the greatest tunes of temporary companionship ever written. The strings, the horns and Larry Muhoberac’s vibrant electric piano make this a classic that could have been equally at home in any blaxploitation film of the pe- riod or, more appropriately, a European dance club. While James Last has performed Cole Porter’s classic many times, it never got near as funky as this. The “Love For Sale” single went to Top 80 in the Uni- ted States. Bolero ’75 – There have been quite a few attempts to rock the clas- sics, or in James Last’s case, bring the “classics up to date”.
