  • Paul Dukas: Villanelle for Horn and Orchestra (1906)
Paul Dukas: Villanelle for Horn and Orchestra (1906) Paul Dukas (1865-1935) was a French composer, critic, scholar and teacher. A studious man, of retiring personality, he was intensely self-critical, and as a perfectionist he abandoned and destroyed many of his compositions. His best known work is the orchestral piece The Sorcerer's Apprentice (L'apprenti sorcier), the fame of which became a matter of irritation to Dukas. In 2011, the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians observed, "The popularity of L'apprenti sorcier and the exhilarating film version of it in Disney's Fantasia possibly hindered a fuller understanding of Dukas, as that single work is far better known than its composer." Among his other surviving works are the opera Ariane et Barbe-bleue (Ariadne and Bluebeard, 1897, later championed by Toscanini and Beecham), a symphony (1896), two substantial works for solo piano (Sonata, 1901, and Variations, 1902) and a sumptuous oriental ballet La Péri (1912). Described by the composer as a "poème dansé" it depicts a young Persian prince who travels to the ends of the Earth in a quest to find the lotus flower of immortality, coming across its guardian, the Péri (fairy). Because of the very quiet opening pages of the ballet score, the composer added a brief "Fanfare pour précéder La Peri" which gave the typically noisy audiences of the day time to settle in their seats before the work proper began. Today the prelude is a favorite among orchestral brass sections. At a time when French musicians were divided into conservative and progressive factions, Dukas adhered to neither but retained the admiration of both.

  • Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827)
21M011 (spring, 2006) Ellen T. Harris Lecture VII Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Like Monteverdi, who bridges the Renaissance and the Baroque, Beethoven stands between two eras, not fully encompassed by either. He inherited the Classical style through Mozart and Haydn, and this is represented in works from what is typically called his “first period” (to about 1800), during which time Beethoven performed actively as a virtuoso pianist. The “middle period” (about 1800 to 1818) saw Beethoven break through the classical templates as he wrestled with his increasing deafness, the growing inability to perform or conduct, and his disillusion with Napoleon, whom he had considered a hero of the French Revolution until Napoleon declared himself Emperor in 1804. 1802: Heiligenstadt Testament depicts Beethoven’s desolation over his deafness; 1803: composition of the 3rd Symphony, originally titled Bonaparte, but changed to Eroica after, 1804: Napoleon declares himself Emperor 1808: 5th Symphony in C minor, Op. 67 From Beethoven’s middle period come the works most often associated with Beethoven and with what is known of his personality: forceful, uncompromising, angry, willful, suffering, but overcoming extraordinary personal hardship, all of which traits are read into his music. The Romantic cult of the individual who represents himself in his music and of the genius who suffers for his art begins here with Beethoven. Beethoven’s “late period” (1818 to his death [1827]) becomes more introspective and abstract, as Beethoven’s deafness increasingly forces him to retreat into himself. Although the 9th Symphony dates from these years, it is the only symphony to do so, and, in many respects, is a throwback to the middle period.

  • Beethoven's Fifth Symphony
NOTES ON THE PROGRAM BY LAURIE SHULMAN, ©2017 Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony ONE-MINUTE NOTES Beethoven: Overture to Coriolan. Coriolan is vintage Beethoven: a stormy sonata-form movement in the heroic key of C minor. Jolting chords and lurching accents in the principal theme portray the tortured, indecisive hero. This is Beethoven at his most tragic. Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 3. A kinder, gentler Bartók emerges in the Third Piano Concerto. Nascent neoromanticism blooms in his melodious, folk-inflected first movement. A noble chorale gives way to nature’s night sounds in the slow movement, leading to an exhilarating finale. Beethoven: Symphony No. 5. Fate knocks at the door in symphonic literature’s most famous opening. Beethoven takes us on a journey from struggle to triumph in his magnificent Fifth Symphony. BEETHOVEN: Overture to Coriolan, Op. 62 LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Born: December 16, 1770, in Bonn, Germany Died: March 26, 1827, in Vienna, Austria Composed: 1807 World Premiere: March 1807 in Vienna NJSO Premiere: 1927–28 season; Philip James conducted. Duration: 8 minutes Beethoven’s overtures vary widely in content and quality. Some are occasional pieces with little dramatic import; others are middle-period masterpieces. The former category includes King Stephen and The Consecration of the House. The latter group is dominated by the three Leonore Overtures and the Overture to Fidelio; plus Egmont and this weekend’s featured overture, Coriolan. What they all share is a connection to staged drama. Beethoven only completed one opera, Fidelio, but we know that he considered several other operatic projects. His Creatures of Prometheus was one of the most popular ballets of the early 19th century.

^anDersi S&eatte, CambtfDge [Harvard University] \ fern % BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA INC. A FIFTY-FIFTH SEASON 1935-1936 [1] Thursday Evening-, October 17 at 8 o'clock FREDERICK PICKERING CABOT First President of the 'Boston Symphony Orchestra 1918-1932 he marble portraiture of Frederick Pickering .^A- Cabot installed in the balcony foyer of Symphony Hall shortly before the opening of the present season is much more than an impressive work of art: it is a spon- taneous tribute of affection and respect to a great citizen of Boston, a man whose modesty would never have per- mitted him to imagine hknself the subject of such com- memoration. It owes its form to the loving memory and skilled hand of a sculptor, Mr. Korczak Ziolkowski, be- friended as a boy by Judge Cabot in his official capacity, and thus brought into a close and inspiring intimacy which went far to determine the younger man's artistic career. When the face of his friend emerged from the marble, as a labor of love, modelled from an enduring image of the mind, others who loved Judge Cabot brought to pass its installation in Symphony Hall. No less fitting than Bela Pratt's bust of Major Higgin- son, long familiar to frequenters of our concerts, is this commemoration of one of whom it can so truly be said that "with faith and understanding he carried on the ideal of his kinsman the founder." In the person of Judge Cabot the present of the Orchestra stands linked with the past, and with the future. fanners? tltjeatre .

  • IMPACT REPORT 2019-2020 Season a Message from Our Board Chair
IMPACT REPORT 2019-2020 Season A Message from our Board Chair Dear Friends, Symphony in C’s 2019-2020 Season was our final season with Music Director Stilian Kirov, whose 5 year contract expired on June 30th. Our mission of training promising young musicians includes giving opportunities to conductors who are rising stars in the classical music world. During his time with us, Maestro Kirov developed his skills in programming artistically excellent concerts and worked with some of the world’s most talented orchestra musicians and soloists. He also endeared himself to Symphony in C’s staff, Board of Directors, and audiences. We will miss him, but are happy to have helped launch his successful career, and we wish him all the best. This season was one of our most successful in recent years – right up to mid-March, when we, like most other orchestras around the world were forced to cancel our remaining concerts. We had planned to honor Maestro Kirov for his accomplishments at our annual gala, which has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 23, 2021. The gala will also honor our former Board Chair C. Carney (Chick) Savery and Counsel to the Board of Directors, Charles (Chuck) Heuisler, Esq. The sudden closures in March left instruments locked in schools and exposed the technology disparities in many urban schools, but also served to show the resilience of Symphony’s teaching artists, who recorded lessons and provided them to the schools. Our annual summer camp was completely virtual, and was a big success. The need for the arts has never been greater as students deal with the social and emotional trauma brought on by the pandemic.

  • Abstracts Abstracts
180 Abstracts Abstracts Giselher Schubert: Paul Dukas: Melancholy Assets As a composer, music critic and composition teacher, Paul Dukas counts among the most representative French musicians of the turn to the 20th cen- tury. Even though he attended the Conservatoire de Paris, he had to pass for a self-taught person. He held close and friendly contact with almost all composers of his time, yet he was basically a loner. His compositorial work is conceivably small, and after 1911, he hardly published any works though his creativity did not ebb at all. His music reviews belong to the most substantial contributions to the musical life of the time; composers like Joaquin Rodrigo or Olivier Messiaen studied with him. In the 1920s, during a time of traditions getting lost, Dukas tried in several essays to regain tradition in an original way. Übersetzung: Claudia Brusdeylins * Dominik Rahmer: »Minerve instruisant Euterpe«. On the Musical Criticism of Paul Dukas’ Dukas’ activity as a music critic occupied a dominant part of his early career. His substantial analyses differ greatly from the contemporary day-to-day critique or the subjective and biased articles like those of his friend Debussy. While Dukas’ methodological approach shows parallels to contemporary lit- erary criticism as Ferdinand Brunetière’s »critique érudite«, his historiographi- cal thinking is marked by the influence of the 19th-ct. philosopher Herbert Spencer. Dukas’ writings aim at fostering the appreciation of a broad range of music from different aesthetic strains, at least until World War I, after which he shifted his attention to teaching. * Arne Stollberg: Between »musique traductrice« and »musique pure«.

Since 1982, when the New York Times wrote that he possessed a "lyrical gift comparable to that of the late Samuel Barber," his music has won international acclaim for its balance between dramatic sweep and architectural clarity. He is often cited as an important figure among the "New Tonalists"-composer who are adopting new tonal grammar to their own uses.

  • Symphony No. 1 in C Major
Program Notes Program Notes by April L. Racana 17 20 21 Oct Oct Oct Georges Bizet (1838-1875) Symphony No. 1 in C major Best known for his opera Carmen, Georges Bizet would not live long enough to discover that his final work had become one of the world’s most well-loved operas in spite of its rough start. (In Paris at the Opéra-Comique its premiere was postponed by a number of delays, and the first performances received much criticism from both the audiences and theatre critics of the 17 time). In a life that was cut short at a very young age, even his first symphony Oct would not be discovered until nearly eight decades after it was composed. 20 Oct Symphony in C Major was composed when Bizet was only seventeen years old, as part of an assignment given to him by his teacher Charles Gounod at 21 Oct the Paris Conservatory. In fact, Bizet had entered the conservatory just prior to his tenth birthday after his musical parents had realized his talents. It was there he would receive a number of prizes for his musical works, including the Prix de Rome in 1857. That prize would give him an allowance for five years for further studies as well as time devoted to composing. When he was still a student at the conservatory he had been assigned the task to transcribe Gounod’s first symphony (Symphony No. 1 in D) for two pianos. This would give Bizet detailed knowledge of his professor’s work and apparently inspired him in his own first symphonic assignment.
