AUGUST 2015 T H E O B A L D E T A L . 1713 A Synoptic Classification of Inflow-Generating Precipitation in the Snowy Mountains, Australia ALISON THEOBALD AND HAMISH MCGOWAN Climate Research Group, School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management, University of Queensland, St Lucia, Queensland, Australia JOHANNA SPEIRS Snowy Hydro, Ltd., Sydney, New South Wales, Australia NIK CALLOW Environmental Dynamics and Ecohydrology, School of Earth and Environment, University of Western Australia, Crawley, Western Australia, Australia (Manuscript received 24 October 2014, in final form 23 April 2015) ABSTRACT Precipitation falling in the Snowy Mountains region of southeastern Australia provides fuel for hydroelectric power generation and environmental flows along major river systems, as well as critical water resources for agricultural irrigation. A synoptic climatology of daily precipitation that triggers a quantifiable increase in streamflow in the headwater catchments of the Snowy Mountains region is presented for the period 1958–2012. Here, previous synoptic-meteorological studies of the region are extended by using a longer-term, year-round precipitation and reanalysis dataset combined with a novel, automated synoptic-classification technique. A three-dimensional representation of synoptic circulation is developed by effectively combining meteorological variables through the depth of the troposphere. Eleven distinct synoptic types are identified, describing key circulation features and moisture pathways that deliver precipitation to the Snowy Mountains. Synoptic types with the highest precipitation totals are commonly associated with moisture pathways originating from the northeast and northwest of Australia. These systems generate the greatest precipitation totals across the westerly and high-elevation areas of the Snowy Mountains, but precipitation is reduced in the eastern-elevation areas in the lee of the mountain ranges. -

Jack is based on a real person; an Aussie larrikin and country lad struggling to earn money during the 1920s and Depression to help his family. His positive outlook sees him through. He continues to return home and writes to Laura after he leaves school, aged thirteen. Emily makes new friends at her new school; Amy, part Aboriginal, Shannon and Chase. She goes exploring around the Riverina and high country with her family learning about history and the environment. (2016) PhD Thesis, The University of Queensland Abstract Surface freshwater yield is a service provided by catchments, which cycle water intake by partitioning precipitation into evapotranspiration and streamflow. Streamflow generation is experiencing changes globally due to climate- and human-induced changes currently taking place in catchments. However, the direct attribution of streamflow changes to specific catchment modification processes is challenging because catchment functioning results from multiple interactions among distinct drivers (i.e., climate, soils, topography and vegetation). These drivers have coevolved until ecohydrological equilibrium is achieved between the water and energy fluxes. Therefore, the coevolution of catchment drivers and their spatial heterogeneity makes their functioning and response to changes unique and poses a challenge to expanding our ecohydrological knowledge. Addressing these problems is crucial to enabling sustainable water resource management and water supply for society and ecosystems. GO BUSH MARCH 2015 BENDIGO BUSHWALKING AND OUTDOOR CLUB INC President’s message for March Seven Committee members met at my place on March 17. In summary: • The new BBOC Logos, winch will be free to club members, are still coming soon. • Check out our continually improving website at http://gobush.org.au. • We're still developing a 'Leader's Pack', for inclusion in our website. This will be a great help to any member considering leading an activity; and we do need more leaders. • We reckon that Bushwalking Victoria's document on Safety and Risk Management will probably do us and we will have a link on the website to it. We recommend that all members study it; for most it will be common sense but there will be some new ideas that we should all know about. • We are going to make more use of Dropbox to store photos, reports etc, which will provide us with permanent backup of these. Garry is working on this. • Our meeting place, Sacred Heart Hall, will be demolished soon, so we are looking for a new inspiring venue. Kerrie (Norris) and Maggie are looking at three possibilities. If you have any ideas on a venue, let them know; their phone numbers are below. • The March meeting will feature Reece Tehan talking on his experiences as a volunteer for ten years helping the East Timorese get back on their feet.
