The following telegram was sent today by Mr. Arthur Greenwood, Minister Without Portfolio, to a meeting of the National Union of Seamen at Brighton!- Deeply regret unable to be with you today. I pay my tribute to the magnificent courage and fortitude of the Mercantile Marine. I feel confident that it will continue to play its full part in the grim struggle on which we are engaged. He is not alone in overlooking the importance of the drink question in the early history of the Labour Party. Even John Greenaway’s analysis of the high politics of alcohol since 1830 only briefly discusses Labour’s attitude to the subject, and then primarily in terms of intra- party divisions.3 Many Labour historians have also largely written the subject out of the Party’s history.
