Christian History & Biography
Issue 98: Christianity in China As for Me and My House The house-church movement survived persecution and created a surge of Christian growth across China. Tony Lambert On the eve of the Communist victory in 1949, there were around one million Protestants (of all denominations) in China. In 2007, even the most conservative official polls reported 40 million, and these do not take into account the millions of secret Christians in the Communist Party and the government. What accounts for this astounding growth? Many observers point to the role of Chinese house churches. The house-church movement began in the pre-1949 missionary era. New converts—especially in evangelical missions like the China Inland Mission and the Christian & Missionary Alliance—would often meet in homes. Also, the rapidly growing independent churches, such as the True Jesus Church, the Little Flock, and the Jesus Family, stressed lay ministry and evangelism. The Little Flock had no pastors, relying on every "brother" to lead ministry, and attracted many educated city people and students who were dissatisfied with the traditional foreign missions and denominations. The Jesus Family practiced communal living and attracted the rural poor. These independent churches were uniquely placed to survive, and eventually flourish, in the new, strictly-controlled environment. In the early 1950s, the Three-Self Patriotic Movement eliminated denominations and created a stifling political control over the dwindling churches. Many believers quietly began to pull out of this system. -

Religion in China BKGA 85 Religion Inchina and Bernhard Scheid Edited by Max Deeg Major Concepts and Minority Positions MAX DEEG, BERNHARD SCHEID (EDS.)
Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. Religion in China Religion ∙ Max DEEG is Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Cardiff. His research interests include in particular Buddhist narratives and their roles for the construction of identity in premodern Buddhist communities. Bernhard SCHEID is a senior research fellow at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on the history of Japanese religions and the interaction of Buddhism with local religions, in particular with Japanese Shintō. Max Deeg, Bernhard Scheid (eds.) The Annual Meeting in November was symptomatic of this – it was held on line, was attended by 50 members and supporters, and allowed a dozen or so people to make valuable contributions alongside the formal business. This built on a pattern previously developed at a committee meeting, and a subsequent members’ meeting in the summer, at which Chinese friends (coming from Shanghai, Wuhan and Hong Kong) were able to join the virtual conversations of British-based members. The year began with a financial gift going from FCC to a joint fund set up by the China Christian Council (CCC) and the Amity Foundation in response to the Covid epidemic. -
Mobile Monitoring of Urban Air Quality at High Spatial Resolution by Low

Company Ltd., Shijiazhuang, China Correspondence: Yanxu Zhang ([email protected]) Abstract. The development of low-cost sensors and novel calibration algorithms provides new hints to complement 10 conventional ground-based observation sites to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of pollutants on hyperlocal scales (tens of meters). Here we use sensors deployed on a taxi fleet to explore the air quality in the road network of Nanjing over the course of a year (Oct. 2019–Sep. 2020). Based on GIS technology, we develop a grid analysis method to obtain 50 m resolution maps of major air pollutants (CO, NO2, and O3). Through hotspots identification analysis, we find three main sources of air pollutants including traffic, industrial emissions, and cooking fumes. We find that CO and NO2 concentrations show a pattern: 15 highways > arterial roads > secondary roads > branch roads > residential streets, reflecting traffic volume. While the O3 concentrations in these five road types are in opposite order due to the titration effect of NOx. Combined the mobile measurements and the stationary stations data, we diagnose that the contribution of traffic-related emissions to CO and NO2 are 42.6 % and 26.3 %, respectively. -
Chinese-To-English Translation of Publicity on Chinese Minority Culture from Narrative Perspectives
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, August 2019, Vol. 9, No. 8, 897-906 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2019.08.012 D DAVID PUBLISHING Chinese-to-English Translation of Publicity on Chinese Minority Culture From Narrative Perspectives XIAO Tang-jin Guizhou Minzu University, Guiyang, China Narrative is a literary notion. In narrative translation theory, narrative involves personal narrative, public narrative, disciplinary narrative, and meta-narrative. This paper adopts the notions of personal narrative, public narrative, and meta-narrative to analyze specific cases concerning the Chinese-to-English translation on Chinese minority culture publicity, proposes two narrative translation models, namely, the annotation narrative translation model and the manipulative narrative translation model, and explores the concrete translation procedures and the embodied meta-narrative, covering introduction to minority tales, minority festivals, and minority customs. Narrative translation research is part of the multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary turn in the 21st century, and this research is an organic part of cross-cultural communication translatology. Keywords: narrative, Chinese-to-English translation, publicity on Chinese minority culture, model Foreword Cross-cultural communication translatology explores translation theories and practice from the perspectives of cross-cultural communication based on multiple disciplines. Thus, it shows interdisciplinary, intercultural and interlingual features (Xiao, 2018). This means that it is different from conventional approaches to translation in theory and practice, such as form equivalence and functional equivalence. Nowadays, narrative, an approach in literary studies, and sociology, a discipline which studies social structure, social mobility, and other social issues, are also adopted in translation studies. They are labeled as “interdisciplinary turn”, “sociological turn”, “power turn”, and other things alike. -

Rapid Urbanization in Eastern China: Roles for SEA
Rapid Urbanization in Eastern China: Roles for SEA Peter Mulvihill (York University) & Yangfan Li (Nanjing University) 1. Introduction In this paper we explore possibilities for an expanded role for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) in addressing and preventing problems caused by rapid urbanization in coastal areas of China. 2. Context The torrid pace of economic development in many parts of China is well recognized, and its accompanying array of ecological and social impacts is increasingly well documented. Despite attempts to identify, avoid or minimize these negative effects through EIA, policy and related planning processes, irreversible impacts occur, often in cumulative ways that are not understood completely. This syndrome is particularly acute in China’s coastal regions, where rapid urbanization is transforming landscapes and ecosystems at an unprecedented pace. There is considerable hope that SEA can help improve planning and development processes, thus overcoming some of the characteristic shortcomings of more conventional forms of environmental assessment. The premise that SEA can be a proactive, sustainability-focused process is undeniably attractive. However, the gathering literature on SEA suggests strongly that there are still many implementation challenges to be overcome before this relatively new form of EA can reach its potential. SEA has been practiced in China since 2003. Bina (2008) has identified several recurring problems with the early implementation of SEA in China: it tends to be applied late in the planning process, and is therefore reactive to plans instead of influencing their formulation; like conventional project-driven EA, it is mostly mitigation-focused; there is little public participation; and there is a strong natural sciences and engineering bias in the process. -
