Facing the four parks stretching out as spokes from the monument into Charles and Monument Streets are the Walters Art Gallery, the Peabody Conservatory of Music (now a part of The Johns Hopkins University), Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, a condominium, two high-rise apartments for senior citizens, some very old fashionable homes (one now bei ng the Engi neers' C1 ub), townhouses, "eateri es" i nc1 udi ng a French Restaurant, and a branch bank and discotheque in the former Park Plaza Hotel. The renovated City Hall (often referred to as "The Wedding Cake") speaks of a city with historical roots in transition as it welcomes new residents. The Inner Harbor is a magnet drawing visitors for a variety of activities: the City Fair drawing over a million attendees; paddle wheeling & sail boating; touring the US Constellation (first frigate of the US Navy and built in Baltimore), the submarine USS Torsk, and the old Coast Guard Five Fathom Lightship; eating on the Nobska, at Connolly's, or along Corned Beef Row, and at new restaurants soon to be buil t, inc 1udi ng on.e atop the Wor1 d Trade Center whi ch will give a magnificent view of the City and harbor (where, too, will be the new observation deck); and visiting the Maryland Science Center as well as the Baltimore Aquarium and the new Pavi11ions soon to be built. The aroma of spices emanating from the McCormick Co. permeates the air giving a scent of the exotic to this newest center of activity.     COVID-19 FOOD INSECURITY RESPONSE GROCERY AND PRODUCE BOX DISTRIBUTION SUMMARY April – June, 2020 Prepared by the Baltimore Food Policy Initiative OVERVIEW In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Baltimore Food Policy Initiative developed an Emergency Food Strategy. An Emergency Food Planning team, comprised of City agencies and critical nonprofit partners, convened to guide the City’s food insecurity response. The strategy includes distributing meals, distributing food, increasing federal nutrition benefits, supporting community partners, and building local food system resilience. Since COVID-19 reached Baltimore, public-private partnerships have been mobilized; State funding has been leveraged; over 3.5 million meals have been provided to Baltimore youth, families, and older adults; and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Online Purchasing Pilot has launched. This document provides a summary of distribution of food boxes (grocery and produce boxes) from April to June, 2020, and reviews the next steps of the food distribution response. GOAL STATEMENT In response to COVID-19 and its impact on health, economic, and environmental disparities, the Baltimore Food Policy Initiative has grounded its short- and long-term strategies in the following goals: • Minimizing food insecurity due to job loss, decreased food access, and transportation gaps during the pandemic. • Creating a flexible grocery distribution system that can adapt to fluctuating numbers of cases, rates of infection, and specific demographics impacted by COVID-19 cases. • Building an equitable and resilient infrastructure to address the long-term consequences of the pandemic and its impact on food security and food justice. RISING FOOD INSECURITY DUE TO COVID-19 • FOOD INSECURITY: It is estimated that one in four city residents are experiencing food insecurity as a consequence of COVID-191.

Downs Professor of Geography Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT An understudied example of an early modern suburb, Roland Park, Baltimore (constructed 1891- 1915) bridges the gap between the streetcar suburbs of the late nineteenth century and the tract suburbs of the mid-twentieth century. As an early modern suburb, the development of the Roland Park led to the formalization and creation of many of the social and cultural norms in addition to the landscape elements of today’s modern suburbs. This thesis examines these elements, by-products of the formation of an elite community, focusing on the regulation of Roland Park’s space in protecting it from the real and perceived negative influences of the outside world. Moreover, the thesis explores in depth the peopling of Roland Park’s built environment, a topic of great importance to the success of the community. Tremont Plaza Hotel Baltimore, MD November 17 – 20, 2011 baltimore 2011 Fourteenth National Conference on Planning History Preliminary Program Society for American City and Regional Planning History November 17-20, 2011 Baltimore, Maryland On behalf of the SACRPH Program Committee, our Local Arrangements Committee, and all those who have worked hard to get us ready for the biennial conference, we welcome you to Baltimore for the 14th National Conference on Planning History. This year marks the 25th anniversary of SACRPH’s founding, and we are delighted to see that the organization continues to grow and diversify. The 2009 conference boasted a record number of sessions—54 of them—but 2011 brought in unprecedented numbers of proposals, yielding a program that has now expanded to 74 paper sessions. For the first time, we have extended the regular portion of the program into Sunday. The conference has grown larger, but this is not because the Program Committee reduced standards. All paper and panel proposals were read and rated by at least 3 different members of the Committee, and we accepted only those with high rankings. Fortunately, paper quality seems to be keeping pace with the growth of the organization. Although have added many more sessions, we have not shortened them or crowded in more presenters. Instead, we have kept to SACRPH’s traditional emphasis on permitting time for discussion, by endeavoring to give 3-paper sessions 105 minutes, and 4-paper sessions a full two hours.
