Flørli is a tiny village without road access on the shores of the Lysefjord. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 13:00 there is a fast ferry to Flørli leaving directly from the city centre of Stavanger. It takes you past numerous islands and sounds, you’ll drop y a ouple of illages and then enter the spectacular fjord. The ferry goes twice daily, except for saturdays and also leaves from Lauvvik and Forsand – see www.florli.no/getting-here. Flørli in summer is a bustling tourist attraction. Pumping 2 m3 s–1 brackish surface water to a depth of 30 m created an artificial upwelling of nutrient-rich deeper water. The entrainment of deeper water into the buoyant brackish plume resulted in a transport of about 450 kg d–1 nitrate, 760 kg d–1 silicate and 75 kg d–1 phosphate to an intrusion depth of 8 to 10 m. The artificial upwelling approximately tripled mean chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration and related primary production rate during the summer within an influence area of 10 km2 near the head of the fjord. The size of the area of influence and the relative increase of the algae biomass within it depend on both the water exchange and the photosynthetic effectiveness. The relatively high silicate content of the deeper water stimulated diatom growth inside the area influenced by the artificial upwelling. A higher stable level of phytoplankton biomass, dominated by nontoxic species, would probably increase the carrying capacity of seston-feeding shellfish and could form the basis of more predictable mussel cultivation in fjords.

A STAVANGER Stavanger is today the fourth largest city in Norway with approximately 120.000 inhabitants. Stavanger is considered to be the oil capital of Norway, but before oil was discovered in the North Sea it was fish, specifically sardines that kept the city going. B TINGHOLMEN/HØGSFJORD After passing the historically interesting Tingholmen, where King Olav Tryggvason held his national assembly in 998, we proceed into the Høgsfjord. Many Stavanger families have their summerhouses along the coastline here. C LYSEFJORD The Lysefjord is 42 km long. The name dates back to the old Norse name Lýsir or light. It is believed this refers to the lightly colored granite that can be found in the fjord. The Lysefjord was formed by glaciers during the ice ages. During the most recent ice age, about 10.000 years ago, Norway was covered with a layer ofice that was up to 2.000 meters thick. The fjord is a deep ravine between mountainous valley sides. Between Oanes and Forsand, there is an end moraine of sand, and the fjord is only 10-20 meters deep at this point. Ever since man first settled in the area, fishing and hunting have been important activities here.

The submarine portions of ice-marginal moraines and their distal sediments have been studied in the fjords between Stavanger and Åndalsnes, western Norway (59°-62°30'N). Echosounder, sparker, and high-resolution seismic profiles are used to record the thickness, morphology and structure of the deposits, which are divided into four main seismostratigraphic sequences describing the different phases of sedimentation. Evidence of several ice-push events is observed in some of the fjords, and models of glacial dynamics are presented for deep water and shallow water environments. Volumes of the different sedimentary fa cies have been estimated for some of the fjords. Coarse sediments (mainly glacioftuvial foreset beds) represent less than 10% of the Younger Dryas sequence. Dating of the moraines is accomplished through morphological correlation to the established chronostratigraphy of terrestrial sections.
