It will also be a great opportunity to get to know the guide(s) and other participants =) After the briefing, you’ll be transported to the base of the fjord, during which you’ll be able to catch glimpses of some of the region’s many natural landscapes. You’ll then cruise the full length of the Lysefjord by ferry, view the world-renowned Preikestolen cliffside from below, and get your first glimpses of the Kjerag Boulder. If you’re lucky, there will be a colourful sunset over the fjord. DAY 2 KJERAG WINTER EXPEDITION You’ll start your expedition in the midst of darkness, and hike with headlamps. From Lysebotn, the expedition route follows a winding mountain road, which is closed for the season, as it switchbacks its way up through 26 hairpin turns into the Sirdal mountains. This time of year, at higher altitudes, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll encounter snow and ice. Your guide has the experience and know-how, and will provide you with hiking poles, spikes, and snowshoes. As the sun rises over the mountains, your guide will lead onward to Kjerag’s famous boulder. This portion of the expedition consists of three slopes that are interspersed with two valleys. After 6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau. While standing on a 1000-meter-high cliff, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord, which is simply some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer. At the boulder, which hangs a heart-stopping 984 meters above the fjord, you will have time to relax and enjoy your packed lunch. After the lunch break, your guide will lead you back down the mountain, which will take about 5 hours. As the sun sets and darkness takes over, you’ll again hike with headlamps. No doubt tired and hungry, you’ll arrive back at the warm fjord lodge. While you enjoy a hot shower and a change of clothes, your guide will prepare dinner: a hearty Norwegian stew that will warm both your body and soul. DAY 3 LYSEFJORD FERRY CRUISE / DRIVE TO PREIKESTOLEN MOUNTAIN LODGE / DINNER The next morning, you will have time to sleep in and enjoy the tranquility of the area. If you still have energy to burn, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in some additional activities before lunchtime. Early afternoon, your adventure will come to an end with another fjord cruise, which will transport you back out to the mouth of the fjord. This will be followed by land-transportation back to Stavanger. This portion of the tour ends in Stavanger at approximately* 17.45 (5.45pm). *Due to the possibility of changing weather conditions, your trip may last longer than approximated. Helpful Information For Your Kjerag Trip 2016 Check out the Ferry Boat times to co-ordinate them with your flight times. In general arriving at the Stavanger Sola Airport (SVG) in the morning hours on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday work best for scheduling so that you can leave the airport quickly and catch the *12:30 Fast Ferry ( *new summer time schedule from dates in June sometime ). If your coming for the Heliboogie Monday June 20th would be your best choice for early morning arrival into Stavanger. Do not purchase expensive airline tickets that get you into Stavanger later and then missing the ferry boats into the fjord and having to stay overnight in a hotel just to catch the Lauvvik slow ferry or Lysefjord Tourist Bus in the next day. There is a city map of Stavanger web link as well as other helpful links below. When you get to the Sola Airport catch the blue and white airport Flybussen bus (or taxi) to the "Fiskepiren" destination, Fiskepirterminalen building in Stavanger. Verify with ferry web links below as 2016 does have some slow ferry departures leaving from Lauvik and a bus is needed to get from Stavanger to Lauvvik. These Ferry final destination is at Lysebotn where the Base Klubb and accommodations are located. • Monitoring Anthropogenic Activity in the Hardangervidda Wild Reindeer Range Possible Applications of Crowdsourced Strava-Data in Remote Settings
Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics. Department of Arctic and Marine Biology. Monitoring anthropogenic activity in the Hardangervidda wild reindeer range Possible applications of crowdsourced Strava-data in remote settings Vilde Grøthe Holtmoen Master’s thesis in Biology, BIO-3950, May 2021 Preface This master thesis (60ECTS) was written as the final thesis of the study-program Masters in Biology at University of Tromsø (UiT), faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics, department of Arctic and Marine Biology. My supervisors has been Audun Stien (UiT) and Vegard Gundersen (NINA, dep. Lillehammer). Maps showing habitat suitability for wild reindeer on Hardangervidda in summer used in this thesis, was created by Manuela Panzacchi and Bram Van Moorter for NINA’s project Renewable Reindeer (RenewableReindeer (nina.no)) and will be published in an upcoming report (Tema-rapport) for NINA in 2021 (Panzacchi et.al., 2021, in press). Methods, analyses and results are previously published in Panzacchi et.al., 2015a. NINA had the main idea for this thesis and has contributed with the material for my analyses such as raw data from automatic counters, Strava-data and GPS-data from GPS-collared wild reindeer. 2 Abstract Seen in light of the increasing interest of nature-based tourism and recreational outdoor activities in Norway the last decades (Reimers, Eftestøl & Colman, 2003; Haukeland, Grue & Veisten, 2010), spatiotemporal information on human activity in remote areas and knowledge about how this activity may affect wildlife and nature is a crucial part of a knowledge-based management (Gundersen et.al., 2011, p.14; Gundersen, Strand & Punsvik, 2016, p.166). Hardangervidda is the largest national park in mainland Norway and is also home to the largest population of wild mountain reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus), a specie of international responsibility in management and conservation and recently added to the Norwegian red list (Kjørstad et.al., 2017, p.26; Artsdatabanken, 2021).
